tive ensemble, students must be enrolled in, and in attendance at a minimum of 50%<br />

of the scheduled rehearsal sessions. <strong>The</strong> majority of the ensemble must be of at least<br />

9th grade status. Pianists/guitar players need not be a member of the large ensemble.<br />

6. <strong>The</strong> only instrument provided in the festival center will be a tuned (A-440) acoustical<br />

piano.<br />

7. Warm-up areas will be provided and supplied with an acoustical piano.<br />

8. Jazz Bands must perform copyrighted arrangements or provide written proof for the<br />

exceptions employed. This does not pertain to ad-lib solo sections.<br />

9. If a school has multiple entries, a student can be eligible in both ensembles by changing<br />

to a different basic instrument family - woodwind, brass, or rhythm.<br />

10. Directors MUST indicate on their registration blank any substitutions from the typical<br />

5-5-5 wind section of a Jazz Band. <strong>The</strong> IHSMA will attempt to secure and provide<br />

parts for these instruments.<br />

COMPLETE THREE ADJUDICATION FORMS PER ENTRY AND MAIL THEM TO YOUR<br />

SITE MANAGER AT LEAST TEN DAYS PRIOR TO THE FESTIVAL TO AVOID PENALTY.<br />

SIGHT-READING FORMS WILL BE SUPPLIED AT THE SITE.<br />

JAZZ BAND SIGHT-READING INFORMATION<br />

1. <strong>The</strong> selection will be in Swing Style with a blues format at a medium tempo. <strong>The</strong><br />

concert pitch will be Bb, Eb, or F.<br />

2. On direction from the adjudicator, the music may be removed from the envelope. <strong>The</strong><br />

director will have 5 minutes to study and explain the selection to the ensemble.<br />

3. During this 5 minute period, no one may clap, sing, count or demonstrate specific<br />

pitches, rhythms and/or intervals.<br />

4. <strong>The</strong> director can verbalize rehearsal markings to the band if the ensemble is having<br />

difficulty during the performance.<br />

5. <strong>The</strong> director may select ANY instrumentalist as the soloist(s) for the improvisation<br />

section of the arrangement.<br />

At the conclusion of the performance, the adjudicator will comment verbally to the ensemble<br />

regarding strengths and areas of weakness. All music will be returned to the<br />

envelopes before departing the sight-reading area.<br />

DETERMINATION OF JAZZ BAND RATINGS<br />

<strong>The</strong> final rating for Jazz Band performances will be determined by totaling all of the assigned<br />

ratings - three performance ratings and one sight-reading rating. That numerical<br />

total will then be compared to the following scale to determine the final rating:<br />

4 - 6 points = Division I<br />

7 - 10 points = Division II<br />

11-14 points = Division III<br />

15-18 points = Division IV<br />

19+ points = Division V<br />
