angels of mercy, nearly naked innocents, sexy 

saints, guilty sinners and other creatures of 

lightness and darkness will invade Philadelphia 

from July14-16 for Libertine Weekend 2006: 

PARADISE LOST. 

This year’s celebration is an inclusive 

series of parties, climaxing with the famous

offer accessories like custom fangs, plus 

services like body-painting and massage 

therapy. Dancers, adult play equipment, an 

outdoor hot tub, and stopless dance- floor 

soundtracks in each party area will lure you 

into every corner of the worlds. Guests can 

rendezvous in the flames of Hades where 

torment and tantalizaton abounds, lose their 

innocence in the Garden of Earthly Delights, 

or dance their asses off in blacklight Heaven 

for five hours of libertine mayhem! 

Sunday morning recharges with an 

exclusive naughty brunch at The Astral Plane, 

where $3 drinks and discounted brunch are

on a paddleboat that cruised the Delaware River

The Libertine Ball II: Midsummer Night’s 

Scream took over Transit Nightclub and featured 

mid-air mummies and swinging corsets during the 

summer of Y2K. 

The third Libertine Ball: High Anxiety took over 

the Eighth Floor waterfront nightclub with a 

picture window fantasy playground! 

LBIV: Elevated Ecstasy moved up a level to the 

Sky Café, an outdoor rooftop extravaganza. 

The fifth Midsummer Mardi Gras Masquerade, 

moved to Shampoo in 2003 for an evening of 

debauchery and beads. 

Libertine Ball VI: Pearls from the East also 

happened at Shampoo with separate Opium Den, 

Anime Palace and Kama Sutra party areas. 

In 2005, Libertine Ball expanded into a weekendlong 

Voyage to Atlantis in Atlantic City. A Pervy 

Piano Bar party, a Ball of latex, fishnet and fishhooks 

and a zany Pool Party made a splash!

Chateau Bizarre Underground Fashion 

Since November 1999, horror author Lilah Wild 

and programmer Stray have run Chateau Bizarre (www. 

chateaubizarre.com), a web portal for underground fashion 

and art. Wild tells PASSIONAL more on the motivation 

of the site, and life in a portal of alternative design. 

Chateau Bizarre began as a way to gather all the 

odd little shops on the net into a portal for underground 

fashion, design, art and small press. It began changing 

into a webzine when we started publishing pictures from 

each store on our front page, and doing pictorials like the 

“Haute or Not” couture flops, or making an argument for 

why Olivia DeBerardinis should be designing hosiery, or 

writing about how goth/fetish/pagan chicks don’t have to 

worry so much about getting older the way mainstream 

women are pressured to. 

They loathe the way corporate chains are turning 

incredibly diverse places into the same strip mall 

everywhere you go – so they figured the best way to 

support small business was to show off all the amazing, 

gorgeous stuff that’s coming from the indies. And it’s such 

a treat to buy something custom-made when we’re living 

in an age of mass production. 

Their niche is reporting on subcultural fashion of all 

stripes, but not in a “Goth 101” kind of way because their 

readers are too savvy for that. They’ve seen Transmuters 

and glow-in-the-dark dreadlocks and all kinds of crazy 

stuff, so they’re not easily impressed. And we never say 

“this is a must-have,” we just put it all up and let everyone 

decide for themselves what’s beautiful. 

But in all the years we’ve been working on this site, it’s 

been a lot of fun to spot the design waves as they happen – 

right now I’m seeing a lot of blazers being reworked into 

Victorian frock coats, huge oversized band shirts corseted 

down into mini-dresses, cigar boxes made into antiqued 

purses, lots of bows and polka dot froof being added to 

catalogs as everyone’s doing their own interpretation of 

rockabilly-burlesque. 

The Internet is having a huge impact on fashion in 


general. There is an astonishing amount of choice now 

that all these online boutiques are popping up. Vintage 

and couture items that were previously out of reach 

are easier to acquire now with eBay. And with all the 

articles/galleries on everything from Belle Epoque to 

’77 Westwood, we can all research directly to put our 

own looks together, instead of letting some supermarket 

checkout magazine dictate what’s hot this year. For the 

underground, it’s ended up in a lot of scenes crossing over 

and some deliciously strange fashion hybrids resulting 

from that. 

Upcoming plans for CB include moving from weekly 

postings to Shop of the Day. Says Lilah, “I’m getting so 

used to reading my news in the blog format that it seems 

the next natural step. Also, more editorials about the dark 

side of pop culture. I’m planning an Icons of the ’80s 

series where we’ll be grabbing screenshots from videos 

and movies in the pre-mallpunk era to have some fun 

critiquing the clothes.” 

They are also planning a reader gallery to show off 

what witty and stylish freaks they have in their audience.

inspires their animal urges. 

A vegetarian is a person who chooses to eat lower on the food 

chain for health, ethical or environmental reasons. Some veggie-lovers

Sound Bites 

Deep in the bowels of Philly lies a very supportive 

network of space-rock bands. They bring elements of 

punk, old-school rock and psychedelia to the plate with a 

hunger to never stop playing. 

For several years these bands have set up their own 

shows with help from the Rotunda and High Wire Gallery, 

and have gone out to see and support other local music 

performances. These venues have been some of the vehicles 

helping make the live music dream become a reality. 

Among them is Scattered Planets (www.myspace. 

com/scatteredplanets), a noisy 

wall of sound created by synths, 

Kaoss pads, electric violin and 

guitars, taking you on a trip 

to other worlds with stories of 

drinking with aliens. 

Ohio transplant Doug 

McMahan is the center of this 

band, bringing years of experience 

to the plate. He describes Scattered 

Planets’ sound as “the smashing of 

sharp particles against each other … the results are often 

deep lacerations, sheer chaos and permanent injury.” 

He also organizes the annual show Landing Pad, 

calling local talent and touring acts from all over the 

country. McMahan also organizes another event, Space 

Rock BBQ, a summer suburban all-day affair with many 

local space rockers, including JCP, The Freedom People 

and Sub Primitive. Scattered Planets, Radio Eris and 

AudioPhyle have been the diehard attendees at this affair 

for several years. 

Radio Eris (www.myspace.com/radioeris) is the product 

of duo Matt Stevenson and Lora Bloom’s drive to keep 

music crafted and experimental. 

Together for several years now, 

the band’s drive inspires musical 

growth that is sometimes 

improvisational, sometimes very 

structured and sometimes really 

chaotic. 

Bloom’s spoken-word 

stylings are brought to life with 

Dan “Redbeard” Baker on guitar, 

Kenny on synths, Stevenson on bass and Lisa Spera on

Three Core Bands Propel Philly’s Space Rock 

drums. The blends of synths through effects, bass, classic 

Fender guitar tones, and grooving acid-rock drums have 

created some really memorable shows in some of West 

Philly’s finest warehouses and made a strong show at the 

Clark Park Festival. The future is unwritten, but for Eris 

one thing is for sure: They won’t quit. 

Blinking in and out of this reality is the ever-changing 

but consistently good AudioPhyle (www.myspace.com/ 

audiophyle). When AudioPhyle 

first started playing, they were 

a tight, dubbed-out space jam 

band that slowly shifted into 

very heavy punk-infused rock 

and then launched into space by 

Doug McMahan’s Kaoss pad 

synths. More recently the band 

has been inspired to write some 

serious revolution songs. 

They have had many members drift in and out of the 

band, but the core has always been Colin McDonnell on 

bass and Tia Refait on guitar and vocals. You may show 

up to a gig and get a completely electronic sound sculpture 

set, but don’t be fooled. “We gotta remember our roots: 

deep in the chaos and the void of space,” McDonnell says. 

“We will never surrender without a fight!” 

The Rotunda has always been a welcoming home 

to Philly’s avant and space musicians, hosting monthly 

events such as Gate to Moon Base Alpha, Landing Pad and 

other various world and alternative concerts. The Rotunda 

has beautiful turn-of-the-century decor and a great sound 

system, and provides University City with even more 

culture. All this topped off with free buffets of hot and 

cold dishes provided by rock music’s finest caterer, Chef 

Jeff. Oh, and did I mention that most concerts are free? 

A lot of people complain about Philly not having an 

active music scene, but I see it 

differently. Philly musicians work real hard to create 

their own networks of DIY shows and promotion, and 

many of these talented bands have had lengthy existences 

and, most importantly, fun life spans. 

This is only one window into Philly’s music culture. 

I choose to look a little to the left beyond what is placed 

right in front of me, and have found that the left is a hell

What wears brightly colored PJ’s, purrs and moans 

with delight, and lives to snuggle up to a room full of 

similarly clad and vocalizing adults? A cuddle monster, 

of course. 

That’s the playful nickname given to those who 

participate in a wondrously nurturing and fun experience 

called Cuddle Party. 

The brainchild of REiD Mihalko and Marcia 

Baczynski, Cuddle Party (www.cuddleparty.com) began 

two years ago and is going strong, thanks to the enthusiasm 

and passion of these two cuddle coaches. 

What it is: a safe, nurturing, sensual – but not sexual 

– gathering of adults who are seeking affection in their 

lives. 

What it is not: orgy. Although sexual feelings do 

arise, Baczynski and Mihalko are very clear that this is 

normal, but is not to be acted on in the sanctuary of the 

workshop space. 

“We’re very cuddly together and practice cuddling 

techniques with one another. We’ve developed some 

advanced ones that we don’t recommend for the general 

public,” they said. 

The catalyst for the workshop, Mihalko said, was a 

gathering of fellow bodyworkers – massage and physical 

therapists – whose practices let them offer nurturing 

touch, but their own lives were often lacking in the same 

type and abundance of strokes. His friends who were not 

massage practitioners were intimidated by the thought 

of rubbing the professionals the wrong way, so that they 

were hesitant to attend. 

So, “If you’re not going to come to a massage party, 

grab a pillow and your pajamas and we’ll have a cuddle 

party,” Mihalko said. “It was a moment where there was 

an epiphany, that there is no peer-to-peer touch in our 

culture from a structured point of view. 

According to REiD, “I designed the workshop to 

help strangers feel safe with each other. Marcia hopped 

on board, and by the second Cuddle Party we had press,

and by the fifth Cuddle Party we were taking calls 

nationally.” 

To Baczynski, the idea spoke to interests in her life 

as well. “I was interested in sexuality, relationships and 

communication,” she said. “When I went to the second 

Cuddle Party, I said, ‘This is exactly how I want to be 

spending my time!’ It was clear that we had a hit on our 

hands.” 

I attended a workshop in the stereotypically noncuddly 

New York in April, and was delighted that my 

cuddle buddies ranged in age from 19 to mid-50s, both 

men and women, single and coupled, people from all 

walks of life. 

The workshop begins with a Welcome Circle in which 

rules are laid out for the safety of each participant. The 

one that gets the biggest laugh and knowing looks is Rule 

No. 7: No dry humping. 

There are a few structured exercises to break the ice 

and help folks feel more comfortable with a room full of 

strangers who in a few short hours will not be. 

From that point on it’s a snuggle-fest. In this safe space, 

it’s OK to say no without hurting anyone’s feelings. 

Imagine snuggling up against one cuddle-buddy, 

while another is rubbing your feet, while another is lying 

across your lap and you are stroking their hair. This was 

nirvana. 

The benefits, I found for myself and through others, are 

many: improved communication, healthier relationships, 

enhanced self-esteem and healing through abuse issues. 

Even weight loss, due to being nourished by touch and 

not just by food. 

Although Baczynski and Mihalko are clear that this is 

not therapy, it does have therapeutic value. The comfort 

of touch can mean a lot and release that inner cuddle 

monster.

Summer is here! The time for open-toed sandals, flipflops 

and walking around barefoot is upon us. In 

keeping with the traditional summer footwear, here 

are some hints and tips to keep you feet super sexy

The first cardinal rule of summer: get a pedicure at 

least once from a professional, preferably once a 

month. Girls, this is key to kissable feet! 

Invest in a pumice stone, and use 

it every time you are in the shower. 

A few seconds a day will keep the

Put time aside once a week 

to redo your polish completely.

porous and can trap sweat and 

odors while the exterior is water 

resistant. 

1- Hand-wash most vinyl clothing 

in cold water. Using a mild 

soap to remove the odors (www.

2- Do not twist or wring dry as 

this can create little wrinkles that 

will eventually dull in your shiny 

finish. 

3- Towel-dry the shiny side and 

then turn the garment inside out to

Eat Me Raw 

I never new my fantasy feast would literally involve 

grazing. I enjoy preparing food and eating well, so when 

a friend invited me for a nutrition-based “spa getaway” in 

California, I was game. When I learned that raw vegetables 

would be the sole source of nutrition during my week-long 

stay, I recalled many tasty salads I have created and consumed 

in my lifetime, and licked my chops in anticipation. 

The “spa” was the Optimum Health Institute in San 

Diego, California, and it was more a university of vegetablebased 

nutrition with dormitory-style rooms than a “spa” in 

that there were no major sights to see (though the Institute 

grounds are nicely appointed and cared for). There were 

not haircuts or makeovers like you read about in fashion 

magazines. Instead, there were classrooms, a cafeteria 

(not sure if that would be the word without coffee), and 

greenhouses filled with wheatgrass growing to the tune of 

classical music. 

The first three days of my “getaway” were the more 

difficult as all the food was juiced and I really like to eat (as 

in chew, though we were advised to chew our juice to aid 

digestion). But when the eating began, I was amazed that 

the flavors could be combined to delicious medleys without 

use of salt, oils or additives- I kept coming back for more. 

Speaking of coming my energy level and sex drive went into 

overdrive not just during my week-long stay but also for the 

months that followed while I grew my own wheatgrass, ate 

my veggies raw and prepared delicious versions of pesto 

with raw cashew yogurt and garlic, dehydrated “veggie 

chips” in guacamole dip, raw tomato sauces and vegetable 

wraps (in seaweed sheets). 

Juice bars are easier to find than 

ever, and summer is a great time NOT

Guacamole- Great for sploshing and gnoshing! 

1 1/2 cups tomatoes, diced 

2 ripe Haas avocados, peeled with seeds removed 

1/4 cup finely diced red onion 

1 large garlic clove, minced 

3 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro 

1 small jalapeno pepper, minced 

Juice of 1 lime (about 2 tablespoons) 

Gently combine all ingredients in a medium bowl until just mixed. Season with

A History of Feminine Foundations 

Since the Renaissance, the corset has been 

a mainstay of women’s fashion. The garment 

displayed the female figure to its fullest, slimming 

the waist and accenting the bosom to create the 

famous “hourglass figure.” For women in the 

Victorian era, the corset was their way to express 

their sexuality while maintaining socially acceptable 

behavior. Initially the corset was available only to 

the aristocracy who could afford the custom-made 

undergarments. Its makers were primarily men at 

first; in 17th century France, for example, women 

were banned from the guilds because they were 

deemed too weak to handle the tough materials 

and heavy boning. By the 18th century, women 

had begun to establish themselves as professional 

corsetieres; in the 1800s, at least half of the shops 

manufacturing corsets were run by women. 

With the arrival of the Industrial Revolution, 

mass production of the corset became possible. 

Through the 19th century, women of all classes

were tight-lacing, including African-American 

slave women who worked in homes. The corset, 

formerly a symbol of distinction in society, was 

now available to all. Affluent women, however, 

could still afford to have their corsets custommade, 

which resulted in undergarments that 

were of considerably higher quality than the 

standard corset, which was less ornamental and 

made from more basic fabrics, such as cotton. 

By the mid-20th century, the corset began to 

fade from the fashion scene, ironically, because of 

an argument originally used to support the use of 

a corset. In the past, those opposed to the corset 

had been told that it was useful in supporting a 

woman’s back and posture. Now, with a new 

“thinness craze” emphasizing a naturally small 

waistline, the corset was beginning to be seen as an 

orthopedic tool only for the aging and weak-backed.

Lesbian Film Festival. The decision by gay male and lesbian couples to begin a family has been the subject of several 

documentaries. But this film by Johnny Symons (Daddy and Papa) offers several new insights and approaches to the 

subject, especially concerning who wants a child and how they go about it. Bruce and Paul are a couple who want to 

have a child. They go through a San Francisco agency and meet Jenna and Jennifer, a lesbian couple, one of whom 

plans to have their baby, the other to donate the eggs for a gay couple. We follow them as they meet and evaluate each 

other -- the men need to decide if the woman makes the right mother, the other if this gay couple are the stable, loving 

ones to entrust her future child to. They then begin the arduous journey through the process of insemination and the 

complications which ensue: difficulties in getting pregnant, then later the possibility of twins or more, and the growing 

expense which may derail the process. Symons gets surprisingly intimate access to both couples as we watch their

Each summer many crossdressers are faced with a 

dilemma. We love to dress and act like sexy women. If 

you look around at all the women out and about in the 

city during the summer, you will note that the majority of 

them are showing a lot of skin. Lithe, tan arms, shoulders 

and legs are the major fashion accessory for the happenin’ 

hottie. 

But what’s a poor crossdresser to do when the summer 

arrives and she is expected to be “he” at family gatherings 

and other events where the mode of dress for males is 

shorts, T-shirts and tank tops? He can’t shave his legs, arms 

and back to be like the ladies he emulates or someone at 

the family barbecue is going to say something like, “Hey 

Jeff, are you shavin’ your legs?” 

So, many crossdressers do the summer hibernation 

thing and miss the fun of wearing spaghetti strap tops, 

flirty, flouncy skirts and strappy sandals on warm summer 

nights. What can you do? 

The first suggestion is to out yourself to everyone who 

matters. What’s better, hiding your true self from your 

family and friends for the rest of your life, and growing 

paranoid that someone will find out your deep, dark secret, 

or just going ahead and telling them? 

If coming out is not an option for you, what can you 

do to enjoy your femininity year round? I started out 

crossdressing publicly using a trick that I heard about 

from drag queens. You wear three pairs of pantyhose 

or tights to cover every single hair on your legs. This is 

fine in the winter when you need the layers for warmth, 

but in the summer it was a major pain. I realized that I 

never ran around in shorts in the summer anyway, so 

I kept shaving them and got to wear shorts as a girl. 

Arm hair and hand hair can be more of a problem. 

Most guy have hairy knuckles. Not many girls have hairy 

knuckles. Show up at work one day with suddenly hairless 

hands and arms, people (especially female co-workers) 

will notice that something has happened. Slow trimming 

over a few weeks’ time may make it less noticeable. Also, 

a tan is very helpful to cover any “arm hair shadow” and 

make the missing hair less noticeable than if you have 

pale white skin. (Black crossdressers have an advantage 

here.) 

The good news for younger crossdressers is that more 

and more men are getting waxed. The irony here is that 

it really hurts to have your back waxed, and you have 

to be able to take it like a man in order to be a woman. 

If you can’t shave your legs, you can slowly trim off 

your arm hair to assemble a femme outfit with jeans and

TRANSFORMATIONs 

short-sleeved top. Make sure the fabric of the top is thick 

enough not to show your back hair through it. Shave your 

feet and ankles up to the top of your male socks for a 

femme-looking foot below the hem of your girl jeans. 

Never, ever go out in the summer time in a turtle 

neck with long sleeves. You may as well just hang a 

sign on yourself that says “man dressed as woman”! No 

girl would do that. She might wear a sleeveless mock 

turtleneck, but never long sleeves. Take a look at what 

women are wearing. If you can’t shave to wear the 

outfit, see if you can pick outfits that will take a minimal 

amount of hair removal but are still summertime outfits. 

You’re a crossdresser all year, why not enjoy it all year?

Isn’t one of the Gay Ten Commandments, “Thou shalt not 

intrude upon thy boyfriend’s porn?” 

First off, tsk, tsk on you for “finding” this porn...and not making 

me dvd copies! However, since you have come upon them 

(no pun intended right there), you should know that there are 

both good and bad aspects to your situation. 

I may not be the biggest porn aficionado, but when times get 

tough, porn can be man’s (or woman’s) best friend. Trust me on 

this one, there are times when I feel I come less than Halley’s 

Comet. And then, with a slightly stronger than usual grip on 

my dvd remote - lo and behold, I am just a few stop and pauses 

away from any nasty subconscious or conscious desire I can 

imagine. I have been asked the question,”What would be your 

ultimate fantasy in the bedroom?” by plenty of boyfriends and 

dates, and have answered with, “Do you really wanna know cuz 

it can get pretty rough and dirty up here in this head of mine...” 

Which shows that some people depend upon pornography as 

a way to experience their most desired fantasies. These may 

be fantasies that they may or may not feel comfortable sharing 

with their partners or even friends. 

At one time or another (like, even right now as I’m typing 

this), we all have had urges to act out those desires - threesomes, 

foursomes, sex with specific races, creeds, people of various 

heights (e.g. midgets wrestling), fetishes with certain acts or 

kink, fetishes with certain body parts (guys’ ankles are totally sexy!), or even fetishes with those body parts being 

shoved into other body parts like fisting. (How that can be comfortable I can’t tell you, but god bless `em if they manage 

it and it works for them...). 

If your boyfriend uses porn as a simple release and you would rather him release his urges using your bod, by all 

means tell him how you feel and let him know that you are ready, willing, and able to step up to the plate and take one 

for the team! If porn is really “no big deal” to your boyfriend as he tells you, then all should be well. Ask your boyfriend 

about how you can fulfill his deepest, sexual desires, and just be ready for the truth about his sexual needs and fantasies 

to come into play. You may have to go shop for some costumes or toys so have your Visa card out, and, like their slogan, 

be “anywhere you want to be.” 

And you will find that most guys are unwilling to delete their collection of porn treasures. To some guys, porn is like 

having the eternal, great-sex-ex-boyfriend at their disposal. It is always there and aiming to please. 

But another compromise may be to make friends with his high speed modem and incorporate some porn into your 

boudoir - maybe playing porn you have chosen together as a couple while you have sex - and if this works out, you can

Whether you have a vagina or are friendly with one,

Nurture healthy roots. The vaginal flower tends 

to itself without need for special plant food, 

chemical enhancers or pest-killers if you tend

Do not flush. The vagina is a self-watering 

flower that does not need special flushing. 

Douching actually disrupts the natural internal 

environment of the vagina, setting the natural 

internal pH off balance. The only time I would 

recommend a douche is for yeast, in which 

case you can water down natural, plain 

acidopholous yogurt and use a bulb applicator 

to insert it internally. You should rinse away 

sweat, secretions and menses in the shower 

(preferably without soap). To to alleviate an 

itchy, sweaty crotch, soaking in a vinegar 

sitz bath (basically a big bowl of vinegar and 

water) is less disruptive than douching. Would 

you powerwash your living room? Moisture 

is usually good. Adding small amounts of 

slick lubricant actually protects the walls of the 

vagina, especially from the potentially harsh traction of 

condoms and rubbery sex toys. Generally, traction is to 

be avoided during sex, and slippery is good. However, 

too much of a good thing isn’t ideal, and super-slick girls

might appreciate that condoms (and skin) can absorb 

some of the excess (as do products like alum) so that they 

aren’t too slick to enjoy sensation. 

Monthly red tide: Most vaginas bleed every 

four weeks, and our modern world has reacted with 

terror. Tampons to plug, scented pads to camouflage 

and other products are virtually shoved down our throat 

from pre-pubescence. While it is convenient to plug and 

go, it is not necessarily healthy or sexy. Sex during 

menses is good for you! Recent scientific studies 

have confirmed what many of us have known 

for years that much of the pain and discomfort 

associated with menstruation can be massaged 

away with sexual stimulation. But how stimulating 

is a super absorbent chunk of dry synthetic fiber? 

A menstrual solution for minimizing the mess of 

menses that allows room for sexual stimulation is 

a cosmetic-grade sea sponge. Soften with water, 

squeeze excess and insert into the vagina upward 

toward the cervix. Beginners can tie a cotton 

string to the sponge for easy removal. Squatting 

down and pushing to abdominal muscles to the floor 

is a good way to reach the cervix more easily for 

insertion and removal. Remove the blood-soaked 

sponge, rinse it under water, then squeeze 

and reinsert until you are done menstruating. 

You can boil the sponge and dry it out for 

re-use the following month. A sponge isn’t 

birth control or disease prevention, but it is 

an affordable, biodegradable, comfortable 

menstrual alternative that will save you money 

on tampons. 

Basic vaginal feeding: Would you put 

it in your mouth? Think before you send it 

south! The soft tissues of the vagina are very 

similar to the soft tissues of the mouth. Your 

meal doesn’t have to be sterile, but it should 

be nutritious or at least not poisonous! The 

carnivorous cooch. If your vagina makes 

direct contact with meaty fluids, be aware 

of sperm allergy, infection prevention, and 

contraceptive use. Assuming your partner 

is monogomous/not exchanging fluids with 

anyone else (which is assuming a lot), you 

still need to concern yourself with the cleanliness and 

infectious status of any juicy tidbit you sample! Even if your 

partner shows no signs of any infection, you should each 

get tested for STIs and other conditions (including yeast,

fungus, etc.) that can affect your vaginal environment. 

Don’t exchange fluids for six months, then get tested 

again. In addition to actual infections, irritation resulting 

from hormonal changes, yeast overgrowth, or a reaction 

to the ejaculate of a partner can happen – pH levels and 

other body chemistry compatibility can come into play. 

The vegan vagina: Even if you only play with the finest 

silicone “soy boys” or other meatless toys, Keep it cleantoys, 

body parts and objects don’t need to be sterile to 

use internally, but they shouldn’t be dusty, gummy or 

otherwise dirty. Wash your hands, wash your toys using a 

gentle (pH neutral) soap and water, use condoms on toys 

(espcially if using soft toys with spongy textures). If you 

are planning on sharing your toys with multiple partners, 

clean with 10-percent bleach solution, or boil silicone toys 

between uses. Reduce use of latex condoms and gloves 

– the less you use latex, the less likely you are to develop 

a sensitivity/allergy to it, so rely on nitrile gloves, poly 

condoms and dams, and non-latex toys when available. 

Fertility and family planning: You can track your 

fertility using a speculum, mirror and flashlight. Seeing 

inside your body is an amazing visual journey that you 

should experience, even if you don’t care about babies 

or fertility. If you are trying to plan or avoid conception, 

you can gauge fertility by how wide open the os (opening) 

of the cervix is and by checking the consistency of the 

mucus on the cervix. If you are pregnant or trying to get 

pregnant, avoid using lubricants containing L-argenine 

(which can cause premature contractions and other 

problems), vitamin C (or citric acid, a common preservative 

that can and lower sperm count) or spermicides. Opt for a 

natural lubricant with a neutral pH(silicone, vegetable oil, 

organic lubricants). Condoms are a simple and effective 

means of birth control without side effects, plus they help 

prevent infections. The Reality Condom (aka the female 

condom) is an insertable non-latex condom that can be 

worn for hours before sex. For partners who are fluidbonded, 

the use of condoms on fertile days combined with 

early withdrawal on non-fertile days can be effective.

Choosing a Professional Mistress: A Guide for Clients 

Many articles have been written on proper etiquette, safe words, rules, 

proper technique and treating your play partner correctly. But what if you do 

not wish to be out, prefer confidentiality, or are incredibly shy? This article will 

guide you. 

The phone call So, you’ve finally decided to call Her! All this time 

fantasizing, dreaming … and now if you can just dial the number. STOP! 

Before you call, re-read her ad - There are clues in it. Respect Her telephone 

hours. If they are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., do not call at 9:45 a.m. expecting an answer, 

or at 2:15 p.m. and hope She’ll spend the next hour chatting with you. These 

hours are posted for a reason. She may have a family, job, or session to go to. 

Next, address the party as listed in their ad. Mistress Simone, Goddess Diva, 

Ma’am. Not “Simone,” “Diva” or a casual “Hey.” Show the proper respect. 

If no title is given, choose a respectful prefix. If She has a secretary, slave 

or assistant who answers the phone, treat this person also with respect. They 

obviously know why you are calling and are knowledgeable of the Domina’s 

procedures. Do not demand to speak to the Domina and only to her. You 

don’t call your doctor and give his receptionist a hard time, do you? Be polite 

and speak clearly. You will be most likely prompted with questions geared 

toward helping to see if you are a potential client for the Domina. 

Honesty with your fetish Before you call, have some idea of what type of fetish, training or session you are 

interested in. This question should be asked early on in the phone interview. You must make a good impression if you 

wish to be granted a second interview. Asking for sexual gratification is not going to get you in the door. A professional 

Domme is not a prostitute. Don’t hide behind words such as “servitude” or “worship.” Skilled pro-Dommes are hard to 

find, so do not waste time on things which she will not do. It is insulting. You can ask about release or masturbation if 

it is important to your scene. We are used to this question, so you will not offend. 

Be honest about your experience. Telling the Domina your likes and dislikes will help both of you make any 

future sessions enjoyable. Don’t tell a Domina you have experience in play piercing and then pass out at the site of the 

first needle If you have never tried something, say so. The honesty will be respected, and you may open new doors of 

exploration. 

Ask questions, get details. Can I bring my own toys? What days and hours are sessions available? Inquire as to 

what her specialties are. If you are into crossdressing, but the Mistress is not equipped to do this, you need to know. 

Politely say thank you and try someone else. Don’t waste any further time if you do not wish a session. Ask about 

the equipment if you have a particular piece you need for your fetish, such as suspension, cages or mummy bag. Not 

everyone has a house full of dungeon equipment. 

Now the thousand-dollar question: money. Yes, we have to mention it. Do not make this your first question. It 

is rude. Do not ask how much you charge, how much it costs, what the price is. This will probably end the phone call 

quickly. Always refer to it as the gift, token or gratuity. Do not go into sticker shock when a figure is mentioned. If you 

have any questions regarding the gift, now is the time to ask them. Are longer sessions available? Are other Dominants 

or submissives available? Do different fetishes have different gifts? 

The last step is to schedule or not. If you wish a session, now is the time to state it. If not, thank them for the 

time and end the call. If you are looking to schedule at a later date, say so and give some idea as to time frame. The 

Mistress may have a vacation or convention planned at that time. This will prevent any disappointment when you call 

to schedule and she’s out of town. Make sure they have your name or some type of name so you will not have to repeat 

the process. If you are ready to schedule, ask about open times that might be good for you. Be prepared to be given a 

few choices if your first choice is filled. At this time you will be given instructions on how to proceed to your next step 

– the actual session!

Mike Johnson, 54, tour guide and underground mainstay 

Philadelphia historical tour guide, musician and athlete Mike Johnson died May 4 from heart 

disease. He was 54. 

Mike was a vital part of the Philadelphia community and an active member of Philly’s 

underground: a member of the Wheels of Soul Motorcycle Club, and a participant in Wiccan 

and fetish events. 

“He left this world having touched so many lives,” said his 

best friend Slo. “He lived by his own rules and marched to 

the beat of his own drums. He was the kind of guy that was 

the life of a party. The kind of guy that would give you the shirt off his back. The 

kind of guy that looked at everyone with that same equality, no matter what you 

thought of him.” 

In mixed company only so much could be said at Mike’s funeral. Radio personality 

John DeBella said it so well: Mike had a life that touched all bases. DeBella recapped 

Mike’s infamous expressions and had each one to a T. A touching moment was when 

one of his young relatives stood up to speak and tried to say behind his tears that his 

Uncle Mike helped him with a school project and with that help he got an A-plus . 

Mikes’ treasures were placed on the back table for all to see and choose something 

to take with them to remember him by. That’s the kind of guy Mike was! 

A memorial garden at Fairmount Park’s Lemon Hill is rumored to be in the works.

Is Love a Crime? 

We live in a nation where couples living together “out of wedlock” 

are a commonplace phenomenon. The number of unmarried couples 

cohabiting in the United States increased tenfold between 1960 

and 2000. Forty-one percent of women ages 15-44 have lived with 

partners in unmarried relationships. It would probably surprise you, 

therefore, as it did me, to learn that cohabitation without marriage is 

a criminal offense in seven states: Florida, Michigan, Mississippi, 

North Carolina, North Dakota, Virginia and West Virginia, with fines 

ranging from $500 to $1,000. In six of these seven states, you can 

be put in jail for living with the person you love for up to a full year! 

You may believe that these are archaic laws that probably never 

get enforced. Wrong! In North Carolina, where there are an estimated 

144,000 unmarried couples living together, there were over 30 criminal 

prosecutions during 1997-2004. Won’t these laws be taken off the 

books once they are brought to the state legislatures’ attention? Well, 

maybe. Six states – Arizona, Idaho, Kansas, Maine, Massachusetts and 

New Mexico – have repealed their cohabitation laws. But not North 

Dakota, where a repeal effort was resoundingly defeated by a 52-37 vote 

citing “the state’s preference for marriage and the traditional family.” 

The impact of these laws goes far beyond criminal prosecutions. 

Your job and your housing may be in jeopardy. Deborah Hobbs of 

North Carolina was confronted by her employer, when he discovered 

that she was not married to her live-in boyfriend. Hobbs, 40, was given 

these options: get married, move out, or get another job. She chose the 

latter and, represented by the American Civil Liberties Union, is suing 

to have the North Carolina cohabitation law declared unconstitutional. 

Cohabitation can get you evicted or can be used as the reason for 

refusal to sell or rent. In Michigan, two unmarried couples, who were 

rejected as tenants on the basis that they would be cohabiting without 

marriage, had to take the case to the state Supreme Court. They ultimately 

won, but only narrowly in a 2-1 decision with a dissenting judge stating 

that “it is in the declared policy of the state to discourage such behavior.” 

Even without criminal statute, the town of Black Jack, Mo. banned 

unmarried couples from living in single-family houses. This issue is 

serious enough that the Alternatives to Marriage Project is seeking federal 

rules preventing discrimination in public housing based on marital status. 

So here we have an issue that lingers on from a prior, less liberated 

period of American history. Criminal prosecution of unmarried couples 

makes no sense in 21st- century America, and discrimination on the 

basis of marital status is equally pernicious. For those of you seeking an 

issue on which to fight for sexual freedom, this is certainly a good one.
