collection tecHnology operation Teamwork Germany 2006 During 2006 TOMRA delivered approximately 9,000 reverse vending installations to its customers in Germany—the company’s largest volume ever in a single year. The sheer size and complexity of this endeavor required extreme precision in TOMRA’s production and delivery logistics, as well as a tight dialogue and collaboration with our customers. Starting off the year was the installation of 1,650 machines to all of the stores within the Aldi Süd discount chain. following the acceptance in May 2005 to revise the non-refillable deposit system in Germany (see “The German deposit system for non-refillables”), work began in earnest to get ready for its full implementation on 1 May 2006. A number of retailers began testing reverse vending solutions, including ALDI Süd, which had indicated it required a high quality, high capacity machine with internal compaction that was well equipped to handle the large return volumes and assortments of German discounters. In October TOMRA signed an agreement with ALDI Süd to deliver 1,200 machines (this was later increased to 1,650), prior to the start date of the new deposit system. The model chosen was the dual cabinet, stand-alone version of the T- 83 hCp, which in fact was still under development to meet the emerging DPG requirements (see related article). ALDI Süd had an integral part in defining certain features of the machine, including its custom color, the specially designed label on the machine front, and certain other fittings. TOMRA and ALDI Süd jointly developed the detailed plans and procedures for installation, undertaking several road shows with all responsible managers in the 31 regions to ensure all aspects of the necessary preparations were communicated and understood. for the entire rollout to be successful it was necessary that each link in the process continually executed their tasks on time. As the machines were produced they were sent to one of several hubs in southern Germany. The operations team then coordinated where the machines would be sent for installation. The installation itself was organized through a third party logistics company whose technicians had been trained by TOMRA upfront. In January we delivered 50 machines during the month, by the peak period in March we were installing up to 50 a day. In parallel to the rapid installation schedule, TOMRA was also ramping up its field force to service the systems installed. The last of the machines was installed on 29 April, so that all 1,650 were up and ready to go on 1 May. This project, which at the time of its execution was the biggest project ever in TOMRA’s history, was characterized by an extremely close cooperation between TOMRA and ALDI Süd--a perfect example of how a customer and a supplier can work together in order to reach common targets. ThE GERMAN DEPOSIT SYSTEM fOR NON-REfILLAbLES Germany introduced a compulsory deposit on certain disposable beverage containers that took effect on 1 January 2003. Numerous legal and procedural uncertainties remained unresolved after this date however, resulting initially in so-called “island solutions,” i.e. each retailer only accepting in return the specific containers that they themselves were selling. In May 2005 an amendment was enacted abolishing this arrangement effective 1 May 2006, replacing it with a national system that required retailers to accept all deposit container types that they carry regardless of whether they were originally purchased at their store (an exception to this is provided for stores under 200 square meters in size). The list of drink types subject to deposit was also at this time significantly expanded. A non-profit organization was also established in June 2005 to administrate the deposit system, Deutsche Pfandsysteme Gmbh (DPG), managed by representatives of the German beverage industry. The principal tasks of this organization are to manage the deposit marking standards and the master database of deposit container EAN codes; certifying the means of manual and automated collection; and ensuring the flow of clearing data between initial suppliers, dealers and service providers. ALDI ALDI is a leader in the international grocery retailing industry with more than 37 billion USD in annual revenues. The first ALDI store opened in 1948 in Essen, Germany, founded by brothers Karl and Theo Albrecht. In 1960 the brothers split the German operation into two sister companies, with Karl responsible for the stores in southern Germany (ALDI Süd) and Theo in charge of the northern stores (ALDI Nord). ALDI Süd is represented worldwide by more than 65 legally independent companies operating in southern Germany, Austria (as hofer), USA, Great britain, Ireland, Switzerland, Slovenia (as hofer) and Australia. Currently the company has a total of 3,425 stores in operation. ALDI mainly sells their own exclusively-produced labels and is known for offering top quality at low prices. The company’s business concept is built on the idea of providing a limited product assortment of about 600 staple items combined with a different amount of special weekly offers (primarily on non-food items such as PCs). With 3 out 4 households in Germany shopping at ALDI, it is evident that the company delivers great value to its customers. 15
