Be Thankful
Colossians 4:2 says, “Devote yourselves to prayer,
being watchful and thankful.”
It’s so easy to look at our lives and focus on the things we want and what the
world tells us we need and think we may not have it all. Thanksgiving is a time
to stop and be thankful to God for all that we have.
We can be thankful that we are a part of God’s body of worshippers. We
can be thankful that our congregation is full of people who go out into the
communities, near and far, to tell people about Jesus. We can be thankful for
the freedom to worship.
In this issue of The Journal, we find out how some children in South Texas are
thankful for Park Cities Baptist Church, how our Senior Pastor—Teaching is
thankful for his church and how PCBC members are thankful. Have a wonderful
Thanksgiving and be thankful!
Dear Friends,
Janet and I are
so very grateful
to our church
family for your
support and
encouragement
following
my mother’s
homegoing. Your notes, cards, and other
expressions of sympathy have been gifts
from God to us. Mom loved her church
and her Sunday school class. We know that
she is home and she is well. Our family is
deeply grateful for your kindness to us, and
thankful to the Father for the privilege of
serving him with you.
PCBC Members Are
Our members have many things for which to
be thankful. We can worship freely. We have a
facility in which we can worship where we are
surrounded by fellow believers.
We asked a few members about their favorite
Thanksgiving memories and why they are
thankful. Enjoy!
Delivering Thanksgiving Meals
The Thanksgiving experience that is most memorable was
when I was pastor of a church in Mabank, TX. I decided to
bring each family a Thanksgiving dinner. At first, my wife
Nancy opposed because bad weather was forecasted.
Nevertheless being the “hard head” I was, I was determined
to take these baskets to Mabank and surprise some that
would not have a dinner otherwise. I told myself that when
I got out on that highway the weather would clear up. God
will move this storm. I bought a load of chickens, ducks and
other fixings and packed my station wagon. When my wife
knew my mind was made up, she took off work to make the
trip with me. Away we went down Highway 175 praying
all the way in heavy rain and lightening. It never let up all
the way to Mabank. When we drove up to the first house
they looked out at us as if they saw a ghost. Nothing could
compare with the joy we both felt seeing the surprise and
gratitude of these folks. Almost as soon as I got out of the
car with my first package in my hand I fell in a ditch and was
soaked. Nancy stepped right behind me and was drenched
too. We both fell out laughing. That did it. This was the best
time of our life. We had so much fun that day going house to
house delivering Thanksgiving dinners.
Family, Family, Family
One of my favorite ways to spend Thanksgiving is going to
my cousin’s house in Southlake. Tons of family members are
there, most of which I see only on this special day. After we
have stuffed our tummies, we always go see one of the new
movies out. Some of us have been known to sleep through
it, but that’s okay. We’re all together.
A Time to Reflect Upon Blessings
The Thanksgiving service and breakfast at the church during
the 1980’s was a very, special day. It had a lot of meaning
and people appreciated it. It was a time to come together
with praises. Thanksgiving does not ask anything else, but to
be thankful.
The entire church was invited to a Thanksgiving service and
breakfast early in the a.m. on Thanksgiving. We had huge
crowds, a devotional time, scripture reading, a message,
the Crusader Choir was in robes – it was a special church
hour. Whole families would come. After worship we went
to the Fellowship Hall where they had set up long tables
for a beautiful Thanksgiving breakfast. It was enjoyed by
children, families, adults and we talked about what we were
thankful for, our prayers of Thanksgiving. We used to say the
100th Psalm together. The whole temperament was one of
gratefulness. It was just Thanksgiving.
Martha Howard
We Gather Together
There used to be a very early service on Thanksgiving and
then we would have breakfast in Fellowship Hall. My family
would always go. My Dad traveled a lot, but he was always
home on Thanksgiving. I remember Roy and Lillian, (they
used to run the kitchen and were much beloved by the
members of the church) cooking breakfast and being able
to smell it in the Sanctuary. I also remember the service was
special because it was about counting your blessings and we
always sang “We Gather Together.” Thanksgiving is still my
favorite holiday, and I love the gathering of my family that
still occurs each year.
Mary Cagle
Saved by the Bell!
Whenever our family gathered around the table on special
occasions, tradition dictated that each one should in turn
recite or sing to entertain the others. I dreaded it! One
Thanksgiving when I was about twelve, I arranged to have a
friend telephone me with an invitation to join her family in
a ride to the countryside. The call came right on time, and
to my great relief I was excused from the table. Saved by the
bell—or in this case, Alexander Graham Bell!
“Enter his gates with
thanksgiving and his courts with
praise; give thanks to him and
praise his name.“ Psalm 100:4
Serviceman Home for Thanksgiving
Our family has celebrated Thanksgiving in a number of ways.
One in particular I will never forget: the year my husband
Brian was deployed overseas. We honored him that year
with a special place at the table and offered a prayer on
his behalf. And though I was surrounded by family, there
was still an empty chair beside me and an emptiness and
longing I had never before experienced. Thanksgiving is a
holiday to celebrate our blessings and that year, I found it
very hard to focus on mine.
This year we will be celebrating Brian’s recent return from
yet another deployment (6 1/2 months in Afghanistan.) We
are overjoyed that God returned him to us safe and healthy.
And we are grateful beyond words for the love and support
of so many in our church who prayed and sent cards and
carpooled and brought meals and planted our flowerbeds
and mowed our lawn! You were the hands and feet of
Christ to us! We have SO very much to be thankful for this
Thanksgiving! However, there will still be an extra place at
our table, a full place setting and an empty chair, marked
only by an American flag, because there are other families
who will be missing their loved ones this year. We know
their heartache and honor their sacrifice. How thankful we
are for a church who loves us and how blessed we are to
be Americans!
Erin Anderson
Grandmother’s Kitchen
I loved the smell of my grandmother’s kitchen—years later,
when we bought her house and moved in…we could still
smell “Thanksgiving” on cold days!
Elaine Tate
Giving to Others
One of my favorite Thanksgiving memories was being able
to provide a Thanksgiving dinner for a less fortunate family.
It touched my family’s heart to be able to share God’s love
and blessings in this way.
Rayelynn Dady
Thanksgiving Morning Service
One of our family’s favorite and most meaningful
Thanksgiving memories was the Thanksgiving morning
service starting at 7:30 a.m. followed by breakfast. It started
the day reminding us of the real meaning of the day and
included some great fellowship with fellow believers. It also,
of course, included the college kids home for the holiday.
Mary Alice and Dick Deen
To the Farm We Go
We always go to the farm down in the Hill Country where
my great-grandfather had land. There’s something about
a farm at Thanksgiving time…lots of memories for me
from growing up. My great-grandfather’s house is still
there. Built before 1800’s—it’s been re-done now. My
granddaughter built on the land given to my mother by my
great-granddaddy and we go there now. I love the farm at
Thanksgiving. Brings back fond memories, so full of family.
Serving Up Blessings
For the past few years, our family has enjoyed the
opportunity to share our Thanksgiving Day with our
friends of Cornerstone Baptist Church. On Thanksgiving
Day, Cornerstone Baptist serves a meal to the south Dallas
homeless community, elderly in their homes and folks in the
area nursing homes. PCBC participates with Cornerstone
by preparing over 500 meals at the Flying Fish restaurant
in Preston Center. We then deliver those meals to those in
need. On Thanksgiving Day our family has been blessed by
serving and sharing with a great turnout of PCBC members
and friends. Last year we had over 200 participate in the
preparation of meals. We are always blessed far more than
we give and always reminded of the blessings God has given
our family.
“We are thankful for the pencils because some of us lose our pencils each
day. We are also thankful for the markers and pens because we need the
markers for our illustrations in writing, pens for checking our work and
we are also grateful for the paints.” Harley
“What I really needed was paper, paper, and more paper. You see, I have
a writing teacher who makes us write a lot. And my writing teacher is
expecting us to have paper every day.” Gema
“Thank you for the pouch. I got my favorite color red, and I use it every
day. It holds my pencils, markers, colors and my erasers.” Dezaray
“We are all thankful for you. God bless you all.” Blanca
In South
Texas
In our August Journal we reported on a Mission
Trip to South Texas with a team of young
married adults from PCBC. In Monte Alto, a rural
community about 45 minutes northwest of
Harlingen, the team hosted Vacation Bible School
at Monte Alto Baptist Church in the mornings
for the neighborhood children and helped with
construction and community outreach projects
in the afternoons. Buckner Border Ministries
partnered with PCBC on the trip and continues to
assist Monte Alto Baptist Church as they do followup
evangelism in the neighborhood.
As an additional part of outreach to this
community, in early September PCBC sent school
supply kits to the children in Monte Alto ISD. Each
box contained the appropriate supplies for the
child’s school grade with a sticker on the outside
that read, “Provided through the ministries of Park
Cities Baptist Church.” Recently, PCBC received a
package full of wonderful thank you notes from
the children in Monte Alto ISD. The Gospel is
being shared – even through school supplies!
“We are all so thankful for
the supplies. Because you
sent this, we can tell you
really care about students
and their education.” Monica
