IN THE
PRIMETIME
OF THEIR LIVES!
In 2005, The U.S. Census Bureau released projections on the U.S. population by state for the
year 2030 and the headlines were about which states are to grow the fastest. The real story,
however, is the picture of the growth in senior citizens. Beginning in 2011, the population 65
and older will grow faster than the total population in every single state.
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE SENIOR POPULATION BOOM IN THE REPORT:
· Three states —Florida, California and Texas — would account for nearly one-half (46 percent) of total U.S. population growth
between 2000 and 2030, according to the projections. Consequently, Florida, now the fourth most populous state, would
edge past New York into third place in total population by 2011; California and Texas would continue to rank first and second,
respectively, in 2030.
· Interestingly, these three states will have the largest senior citizen populations, too, by 2025. California will have
6,424,000 in 2025, while Texas will have 5,453,000 and Florida 4,364,000.
Just as the 65 and older population is thriving across the U.S., the PrimeTime Ministry is thriving at Park Cities Baptist. PCBC
PrimeTimers don’t just sit around and drink coffee, although they do that periodically on a Tuesday for Thee Coffee Shop @ Park
Cities. They are deeply involved in our church serving and discipling, attending Bible Studies and Sunday Morning services,
Primetime events, enjoying fellowship and ministering to one another.
SERVING & DISCIPLING
Members of the PrimeTime Ministry serve in all aspects of our church – from caring for bed babies to missions to our In-Home
Ministry. Here are just a few of the many ways:
· Volunteering in the children’s department, teaching our little ones about the love of God.
· Volunteering in significant leadership positions such as Sunday School Director and Outreach Director for the Sunday
School. Many volunteer with projects in the PrimeTime office weekly or monthly.
· The Loreta Craig Sunday School Class mentors an 8th grade girls’ Sunday School Class.
· Volunteering during Vacation Bible School working in the preschool and children’s areas.
· Visit our In-Home members who are physically unable to attend church.
· Giving donations of gift cards for the children at Buckner Children’s Home.
· Wrapping Christmas gifts for Brother Bill’s Helping Hand’s Christmas Party.
· Sorting clothes from the PCBC Virginia Presley Clothes Closet.
· Packing toiletries for mission trips.
· Mentoring children at Dan D. Rogers Elementary and at the After School Program at Jack Lowe Elementary.
· The Amitie Sunday School Class takes up an offering every month for food for Brother Bill’s Helping Hand.
· The Chuck Kelly Sunday School Class financially supports a missionary in Mexico.
· The Howard Class provides Thanksgiving dinner at Tabernacle Baptist Church.
· The Wallace Whitley Class sponsors food for families of the mentally ill.
· On some Wednesday nights, you will find Ken Thomas, teacher of the Bob Glaze Men’s Sunday School Class and members of that
class, mentoring to children in the Vickery Area about their life experiences.
· Last year, for D-Now, Primetimers gave Bibles for students who were attending and did not have a Bible.
· Every Monday, the Mary Martha Class takes the altar flowers from Sunday from the Sanctuary and delivers them to our members
in hospitals or extended care facilities.
· The Corkran Sunday School Class donates financially to mission projects throughout the year.
· Several are involved with our Spanish service, Amigos De Dios, on Sunday mornings in the Gym.
· The Pathfinders Sunday School Class volunteers at Cornerstone, Brother Bill’s and various other missions ministries.
· The Ruth Glaze Sunday School Class sorts shoes at Buckner and wraps gifts at Brother Bill’s Helping Hand.
· Telling the love of God to international students during our International Friends program on Wednesdays.
· The Monday morning prayer group prays for the members of our church and other requests received.
· Go on Mission Trips to Guatemala, Cuba and Kenya and build Habitat Houses.
BIBLE STUDIES & WORSHIP SERVICES
Sunday School is the foundation of our PrimeTime ministry. Five Sunday School
departments and twenty classes provide many options for senior adults to be involved
in Bible study. Options include men’s classes, women’s classes and co-ed classes. The
strengths of the Bible study program are excellent teaching and caring ministry and
fellowship. It is through the Sunday School classes that seniors develop strong and lasting
friendships and are cared for in times of need. Many times, it is through their Sunday
School class that they are involved in missions through giving, praying and going. Over
950 are enrolled in a Bible study class. Each Sunday we will see nearly 500 of those. If our
senior adults are able to be here, they will be! The PrimeTime ministry also sponsors an
annual Winter Bible conference for the church. Participants enjoy a day-long study from
an outstanding Bible teacher.
CHOIR, ORCHESTRA & RECREATION
We have seniors in the Sanctuary Choir and Orchestra. The Noteables choir, our PrimeTime singing group, love
to sing of the love of God. Many of our seniors go on trips to the State Fair of Texas and throughout the United
States with our Activities Ministry. Some are also involved in our weekly exercise class which meets in the gym
on Monday, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8:30 a.m. We recently had two women join PCBC as a result of coming to
our exercise classes.
The PrimeTime ministry also hosts the annual Old Fashioned Hymn sing each August for the church. It is a time
when the whole church comes together to sing the “old hymns” and hear some of our favorite singing groups
and soloists. Of course, the ice cream sundaes following are enjoyed by all.
EVENTS
A new member once said, “I came in the church for an event in the Great Hall on the east end of the building
and ended up joining on the west end in the Primetime area!” Our church has been blessed with the Great Hall
and the Primetime Ministry uses that room for community outreach through Friday Fest luncheons and dinners,
concerts, Bible Studies, and other events throughout the year. Seniors from across the community come to the
Great Hall to hear a wonderful speaker, have a nice meal and learn more about the love of God. PrimeTimers
also stay busy with game days, movie days, current events with Dr. Denison, day trips and overnight trips. Our
PrimeTime Council is a very active group of 30 members who plan and execute events. They meet monthly to
plan, implement, and evaluate the events for the PrimeTime ministry.
PRAYER WARRIORS
If they are not able to physically be at an event or on a mission trip, the Primetimers are praying for that specific
event or trip or service. They pray for D-Now, for Thee Camp, and for all the summer campers. Their commitment
to daily prayer and reading the Bible buoys them through some difficult days.
CARING FOR EACH OTHER
Our seniors are extremely good about checking on each other and making sure friends have what they need.
They look out for each other and are like family. When someone is sick or needs help getting to the doctor, they
help each other. It’s all a part of being a family. Through our In Home ministry we have approximately 50 visitors
who make visits every month to over 60 members and non-members who are unable to attend church. As they
go, they take Sunday School literature, Mature Living magazine, other written materials from the church and
often “goodies” or flowers. At the monthly In Home meeting, they share their wonderful experiences in visiting
our In Home.
Raising children is hard work in the best of circumstances,
but when divorce, death, or abandonment leaves a parent
raising children alone, the job is harder still. Most of us
know families touched by these unfortunate circumstances, and
know parents who struggle mightily to raise their children in a
Christian environment in spite of less-than-ideal circumstances.
To reach out to the single parents in our church and our
community with love and support, Park Cities Baptist Church has
launched the Single Parent Ministry. Its goal is to provide a forum
for single parents to study God’s word, and address the unique
challenges that single parents face, from a Christ-centered point
of view. The Journal talked with Marcie Freeman, the leader of the
Single Parent Class about the journey to get to this point and the
future for the ministry.
The Journal: What is the ministry’s purpose?
Marcie: Our goal is to establish a network in which our members
can find prayer support, practical help for real-life situations,
friendship, fellowship and encouragement. Our model, of course,
is the first church, which had as a priority meeting the needs of
widows and orphans. Although our view of “widows and orphans”
is much broader, our goal is much the same. We want to learn how
we can help our kids thrive in single-parent homes.
This ministry was born out of the deep need of the single parent
community. So many of us were in Sunday school classes where we
knew we were loved and welcomed, but at the same time knew
we didn’t fit. Many had resorted to sitting in the coffee area and
just waiting for their kids to finish Sunday School, because they had
no place to go where they really felt right. We (single parents) didn’t
even have a means of finding each other, and that is one of the
most difficult aspects of single parenting—the isolation,
the loneliness.
I am so thankful that Pike Wisner, Minister to 30’s and 40’s and
Dr. Brad Schwall, Director of Community Connections and others
in the church were receptive to this idea and supported it. Nothing
touches my heart like hearing our members say, “I was so happy
to come to church today because I knew I had a place just for me,
where I fit in, where I belong.”
Marcie: Inspirational? Me? No. Maybe just persistent! So many
people have longed for this, and prayed for years for this class
to come to fruition. God has been preparing the church for this,
moving the right people into the right places, and making people
aware that they were in the wrong places for a long time now. I
have been compelled to pursue this ministry out of my own need,
and because I knew that the Lord had laid this on my heart. It was
either pursue this ministry or look for a new church, and I knew
God wasn’t leading me away from PCBC.
My hope for the ministry is that single parents will find in our class
deep teaching of the Word, and help for their heavy daily burdens.
We want it to be a safe haven where single parents can step out of
their overly-scheduled, often chaotic daily lives, and feel totally safe
in sharing their struggles, hopes, needs, and joys with others who
know first-hand what their life entails.
I envision lots of social interaction for the class, and a co-op sort
of mentality—we are planning to set up pools for babysitting, to
find mentors for our kids as needed, and to identify the ways that
talents and abilities that each of us have can assist others in the
class. I believe we can learn from each others’ experiences, and
grow in Christ to give our kids the best home life that we
can provide.
The Journal: What is the Class studying?
Marcie: We are currently doing the video study series, “Single
Parenting that Works” by Dr. Kevin Leman, and anyone can join us!
The Journal: How does someone become involved?
Marcie: Just show up! We meet at 10:50 am in Room 101 West,
Reed Bldg. Email me at marcie.freeman@gmail.com or Pike Wisner,
Minister to 30’s and 40’s at pawisner@pcbc.org. We have a web
presence on the PCBC website (www.pcbc.org/singleparent) and
a Facebook group, as well as an email prayer list. We welcome any
single parent, including those who can only make it to socials, and
those who can only be involved remotely.
THANKFUL
off the ground…tell about your desire and hope for the ministry.
Park Cities Baptist is thankful for our PrimeTimers and their love for God and our church. The Primetime
Ministry truly does reach every aspect of our church. As their lives change, one thing remains the same—their
commitment to our church, our Lord and to spreading the Gospel to our city and world.
