Dear TDA Members & Staff,
Let me take this opportunity on behalf of our TDA President, Dr. Carl Sebelius, and the entire
Memphis Dental Society to invite you to the Music City Dental Conference, May 10-12, 2012. The
conference will be held at the Nashville Convention Center and Renaissance Nashville Hotel. It
promises to be a special time of professional fellowship, top notch continuing education and world class
entertainment.
You won’t want to miss the Opening Session and Dinner. Our keynote speaker will be Mr. Bill Haltom.
Bill is a health care lawyer who represents dentists, physicians and hospitals. He is past president of the
Tennessee Bar Association and the Memphis Bar Association. However, he is better known as a writer,
speaker, and newspaper and magazine humor columnist. Bill’s humor columns have been featured
over the years in the Memphis Commercial Appeal, Scripps Howard News Service and numerous other
newspapers, magazines and journals.
Our Program Committee chaired by Dr. Scott Edwards has arranged an incredible educational
opportunity for doctors and staff that should not be missed. Nationally known speaker Dr. Stanley
Malamed will present two different half-day courses on medical emergencies; Dr. Ross Nash will
offer a day-long presentation on “Overview of Esthetics,” a half-day course titled “Indirect Esthetic
“Infection Control.” Other presentations will include: Dr. Brian Schenck on “Beyond Penicillin;” Drs.
Use of Social Media;” Dr. Paul Earley on “Chemical Dependency.” Dr. Bill Bass, a familiar favorite of
“Body Farm” fame, will present “Forensics thru Dentistry” and the Tennessee Society of Periodontists is
sponsoring Dr. Chris Richardson’s presentation on “Practical Periodontics.”
Our strong group of exhibitors will again be showcasing “what’s new” in the exhibit hall. Exhibit dates
have been changed to Thursday, May 10 and Friday, May 11 to allow attendees more time to visit
(closed on Saturday). Exhibits will be open from 7:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. each day.
On Friday evening the Music City Dental Conference will be capped off with a concert at the historic
Ryman Auditorium with special guests: Emmylou Harris, Blackhawk, Carrie Elkins, Danny Schmidt
So come join us at the Music City Dental Conference this spring in Nashville. It promises to be a
Life-threatening emergencies can occur anytime, anywhere
and to anyone. Such situations are somewhat more likely
to occur within the confines of the dental office due to the
increased level of stress which is so often present.
In this course Dr. Malamed will discuss the areas which are
considered vital to a proper understanding of emergency
medicine: prevention, preparation, recognition and
management.
The morning session will include a discussion of preparation
involving the office and staff and will include a thorough
review of the office emergency kit (drugs and equipment).
Human resource management is likely one of the most
challenging aspects of running a dental office. Simply
providing a nice place to work is insufficient to comply with
the rules and regulations in our complex work force. It is
easy to get lost in a maze of statutes, recent court decisions,
common-law doctrines and contract-established rules. The
Department of Labor uses a variety of remedies to enforce
compliance. Avoid paying back wages and costly penalties
by staying up-to-date on the most common payroll issues of
dental offices in Tennessee. Educational objectives include:

New Hire Reporting: Understand the paperwork process
of a new hire. Tips on how to ensure you have all your
documentation including posters.
Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA): Keep up-to-date by
learning what the common FLSA violations are and how
you can bring your office into compliance.
Classification of Employees: Learn how to accurately
classify exempt or non-exempt employees. Wage and
hour cases continue to dominate the courts.
Independent Contractors: Learn how to test this
relationship to determine proper characterization. Failure
to make a legally correct determination can lead to
serious consequences.
Benefits: Tennessee does not regulate fringe benefits.
Learn what other dentists offer to compare your benefit
package in retaining top-notch employees.
Continuing Education: Learn how to distinguish when
compensation is required for attendance and when it
is not. This a common pitfall that can trip dentists and
office managers.
Sexual Harassment: Avoid labor board complaints
and costly litigation through proper training on sexual
harassment.
Job Descriptions: Learn how you can avoid a
discrimination claim through properly written job
descriptions.
may affect your treatment is an integral part of providing
safe, effective dental care. In this practical, case-based
presentation, several classes of pharmaceuticals will be
discussed, namely antidepressants, anticoagulants and
bisphosphonates. Strategies to manage potential issues
related to these medications will be reviewed, and efforts to
maximize outcomes will be emphasized.
Following this session, attendees should be able to:
to the practice of dentistry.
Have an awareness of the various psychotropic drugs
(antidepressants, anxiolytics, ADD stimulants) and
their bearing on our use of medications.
Dentists—and their staff members—have ethical as
well as legal duties to protect the privacy and security of
their patients' personal health information (PHI). This
obligation is ingrained in the history of the profession and
in recent years has been increasingly reinforced by state and
federal regulations, e.g., HIPAA. The evolution of rapid
communication technologies, and the incorporation of
social networking into doctor-patient interactions, requires
that the dental team consider the potential privacy and
security risks that may be associated with the use of these
web-/internet-/cloud-based tools in dental practices. This
program is designed to help the dental team improve its
approach to patient privacy and security, with special focus
on the use of social networking technology in the dental
practice.
Dentists and their staff members who complete this course
should be able to:

Explain the purpose of HIPAA regulations as they
protect the rights of dental patients.
Identify deficiencies in office practice that might trigger
HPAA violations.
Conduct privacy and security risk assessments to ensure
social media compliance with HIPAA regulations.
Develop corporate review strategies to ensure
compliance with HIPAA’s evolving requirements and
advances in technology.
