6. Sexual Gender Based Violence: Nationwide
Initiatives and Coordinated Responses
Security Council Resolution 1325 (2000) “calls upon all parties
to armed conflict to respect international law applicable to
the rights and protection of women and girls.”
Security Council Resolution 1820 (2008) “calls on all parties
to take special measures to protect women and girls
from gender-based violence, particularly rape and other
forms of sexual abuse, and all other forms of violence in
situations of armed conflict.”
Since 2006, UNMIL has participated in the National Task Force on
Gender Based Violence, chaired by the MoGD, which acts as the
main body for coordination of the national response. A National
Plan of Action on GBV, developed in 2006 by the Government,
serves as a guiding document for the Government`s response
and donor support to address this practice across the 15 counties,
setting a timeline for ridding the country of SGBV by 2011.
