The Eastvalley Pledge
On our wings,
Mason Favro Wins
Eastvalley’s Spelling Bee!
Eastvalley’s annual spelling bee
was held on Friday, January 15th.
It was stiff competition, with three
students from each of our fourth
and fifth grade classrooms being
selected (after individual classroom
competitions) to compete. In the
end, it was Mason Favro, a fourth
grader, who came out on top.
To win the bee, Mason had to
correctly spell the word “inauguration”, and a final word, “gravitational”.
It was a great competition right down to the end, with Courtnie
Richardson, a fifth grader, coming in second.
Mason Favro and Courtnie Richardson
Congratulations, Mason and Courtnie, for being top-notch spellers!
A Letter From Our Principal
Page
Dear Parents,
School website: www.EastvalleyElementary.com
The school year is moving along quickly! The teachers and students are
working hard to ensure that all Georgia Performance Standards are
mastered. Great instruction is going on in all Eastvalley classrooms to
engage students in performance based lessons. No longer is it good
enough to use rote memory, but rather the phrase “show what you know”
comes in handy. Students are expected to know, understand, do and
communicate what they are learning.
One snapshot of how students will show mastery of grade level standards
is the Criterion Referenced Competency Test, or CRCT. Those tests will
Karen Wacker, Principal be given beginning on April 14 and ending on April 23. We need ALL
students (1st-5th) to be ON TIME and present in school on those days!
Please do not make dental or doctor’s appointments on any of those days. If you child is sick or has a fever, of course
you will need to keep them home. Thanks for looking at your calendars and marking those days as critical school days.
Eastvalley will celebrate Staff Appreciation Week March 8-12. You should have recently received a PTA flyer asking for
a family donation. When we celebrate the staff, we celebrate everyone! Teachers, bus drivers, parapros, office staff,
custodians, lunchroom staff and administration are celebrated for their efforts in making Eastvalley the wonderful school
that it is! Here are a couple of ideas for you to celebrate with us:
1. Put a sign in your neighborhood thanking the bus driver for keeping your children safe. They will love
seeing it while driving on their route.
2. Have your child make a card for their teacher (and parapro if they have one) saying thank you for making
learning fun.
3. Send a note to Food Dude and his staff for preparing delicious breakfasts and lunches.
4. Make a sign for the custodians that keep our school clean and safe.
5. Send notes to the office staff saying how much you appreciate their service.
6. Create a card for Nurse Ashley that she can display in the clinic.
I know each of you will find a way to celebrate the staff at Eastvalley and it will be all the thanks everyone needs. We
have very special families who are great at giving thanks!
Mrs. Moot Receives Science Award
We have some great news to share with all of our parents, staff and
students! Mrs. Lindy Moot, a 2nd grade teacher at Eastvalley, was
named the Georgia Elementary Science Teacher of the Year by the
Georgia Science Teachers Association! Wow!! What a great award
for a great teacher and for the entire school of Eastvalley. We are
fortunate to have some of the greatest teachers around and it’s nice
when someone else recognizes it also.
A Spectacular International Night
The Eastvalley PTA hosted another fabulous International Night celebration on Friday,
January 22nd. Fifteen countries were represented with wonderful displays of art,
culture, and food. Great entertainment was also presented this year.
Special thanks to: Kozue Cunningham (Hugh and Shun’s mom) for bringing a troupe
of Japanese dancers (including herself), Cristina Clinton for bringing in flamenco
instructor Rina Menosky, and the Jain, Lakshmikamtham, Bose, Joshi, and other families
for working together to choreograph dancing from India and a musical presentation.
We’d also like to thank our Partners in Education for participating in the event: The UPS
Store, Bruster’s, and Chick-Fil-A Eastlake, as well as Tiger Tae Kwon Do Academy and
Marietta Martial Arts -- both of which did fantastic martial arts demonstrations!
Thank you to Kid Chess for running several chess games at once and to Michelle
Jokay, Turin Mamoun and Jennifer Perez for helping with set-up and clean-up.
And of course, a big thanks to our chairperson, Alanne Orjoux, for organizing such a
wonderful event.
Eastvalley Foundation Update, February 2010
Foundation Project Purchases
Thanks to your support, the Foundation has been able to fund the following projects:
• Contribute over $7000 to classroom supplies
• Purchase smart response systems for our smart boards
• Donate over 400 feet of CAT5 cable to enable teachers to use their laptops
in the cottages.
• Upgrade the younger playground with new fencing and mulch
• Buy 19 brand new listening centers for kindergarten through 2nd grades
• Provide 35 new headset/microphone combinations for the classroom computers
Upcoming Foundation Projects The Foundation is raising money to purchase a new technology for our
teachers called a document camera. Rather than using transparencies, it allows teachers to instantly project a student’s
work, a book, or any other image that they want to show the class in color. The teachers find this tool very useful in the
class and the Foundation plans to buy 6 document cameras, one for each grade level this spring. The device was on
display at the last PTA meeting. We are also working to purchase at least 25 new laptops for our current laptop cart.
Look for more information to come regarding these projects and help us by supporting our new fundraising campaign,
Eastvalley Counts on Change.
Eastvalley Counts on Change Campaign A new fundraising campaign has been established to fund our
remaining projects for the school year. Every weekend we will ask you to empty your pockets, your pocketbooks, your
cars and your couch cushions and collect your spare change in a little baggie that will be provided to each Eastvalley
student. So, send in your baggies every Monday morning and know that a little change can do a lot of good. Of course,
we will accept paper money and checks as well! Donations to the Foundation are tax-deductible.
Chick-Fil-A Calendars 2010 Chick-Fil-A Calendars are still on sale for $6! Complete the order
form and make your checks payable to Eastvalley Foundation. Extra forms are available by the front
office. Support Eastvalley and Eat More Chicken!
Brick Orders ATTENTION ALL 5th Grade Parents! Don’t forget to order a commemorative brick for your future
middle-schooler! Order an engraved brick for your student’s graduation gift. Your child’s brick will be placed along the
front walkway for everyone to see! Email a Foundation member or visit the Foundation website for forms and more
information. The last day to place your brick order(s) is Friday, April 2nd.
Prezados Pais,
usamos a fraze “mostre-me o que você sabe.”
