Mr Deasy, can you recall your first visit to Berlin? I first visited Berlin four years ago. I have friends there who were constantly raving about Berlin and its architecture. Well, it was love for me, at first sight. Can you describe this »Berlin« feeling? For me, Berlin is the New York of Europe. The city is full of energy, you can feel this vibrant power everywhere. The controversial architecture, between old and new, is also unusual, for example, the impressive Karl-Marx- Allee by the architect Hermann Henselmanns in the »gingerbread« style of the 1950s, or the imposing, modern design of the central railway station by Gerkan, Marg and Partner and the new design of Potsdamer Platz. Where is your favourite place in Berlin? I really enjoy strolling on the Museum Island. It’s an ideal spot to visit, where you can experience art, culture and architecture, all at the same time. Where in Berlin would you acquire property? Prenzlauer Berg or Mitte – these are still the trendiest districts, in my view. Things have developed incredibly fast since my first visit – it’s a real melting pot of living culture, nightlife, galleries and restaurants. How would describe the property market in Berlin? The market is booming. For the last two years, there has been so much hysteria and hype around Berlin. Many foreign clients have discovered Berlin as the city of the future, the city of creatives and artists. Berlin has meanwhile achieved the same status as other big cities, such as London and Paris, the difference being that it is still fresh, undiscovered and, above all, property is still affordable. Do you still have a dream home? When you live in Los Angeles, you love the sea. I have a house on the beach. But I have never yet lived in a penthouse in the middle of a big city. That is my next goal and Berlin is right at the top of my list. INTERVIEW Ulrike Miebach MIKE DEASY is the owner of the renowned Los Angeles-based real estate company DEASY/PENNER & PARTNERS. His concept is »Home as Art« and when it comes to design and extraordinary architecture, he is the one to ask. During a telephone call across the Big Pond, he reveals to us why he is so in love with our city. Wo würden Sie in Berlin Eigentum erwerben? 95
