hop across the water on stepping stones from one bank to the
other.
My quest for the old and the traditional is almost in vain. Only
sporadically can one still find a relic of the past: a temple here, a
hidden shop selling traditional clothing there. Tradition is nurtured
in the restaurants and community is alive and well there.
Dishes such as bulgogi, samgyeopsal and galbi are cooked right
at the guest’s table in a hole filled with glowing coals. Thin
strips of meat, cut with scissors, are served with sauces and vegetables.
It seems that tradition plays more of a role in the reconstructed
and lovingly refurbished, colourful palaces, from the authentic
recreation of the princes’ suites to the changing of the guard,
with their carefully stuck-on beards. Seoul is no longer on the
road to modernity, it is already there and has perhaps even overshot
its destination.
Der Stress und die Hektik des Alltags sind passé, ich lehne mich
in der Boing der Korean Air zurück, und neun Stunden später betrete
ich eine andere, mir noch unbekannte Welt: Asien, Korea, Seoul.
Meine tatsächlich erste Etappe ist nicht etwa das Hotel, sondern die
KIAF – Korean International Art Fair, die »Art Basel« Asiens.
ORCO sponsert hier die BERLIN LOUNGE im Rahmen einer
Gemeinschaftsausstellung Berliner Galerien. Die Lounge bildet den
Mittelpunkt der Präsentation 10 Berliner Galerien und gibt einen interessanten
Einblick in den kreativen und breit gefächerten Kunststandort
Berlin, allem voran die aktuelle Diskussion um eine Kunsthalle
für Berlin.
Seoul, a city that was almost completely destroyed during the Korean
War. After rapid reconstruction and an economic upswing,
the face of the city was quickly transformed and urban planning
paid little attention to tradition, with the exception of palaces and
temples.
With over 10-million inhabitants, Seoul has advanced to become
the political, cultural and economic centre of South Korea, host of
the Olympic Games and venue for the Football World Cup.
In einem der »daily talks« unterstreicht ORCO unter dem Motto »creating
urban spaces« sein Engagement für den Standort Berlin als Kunst-
und Kulturmetropole. ORCO will Künstlern nicht nur Raum in eigenen
Objekten zur Verfügung stellen, sondern auch die Gelegenheit zur
Präsentation der hier geschaffenen Kunstwerke im öffentlichen Raum
bieten. Inside out – outside in, Kunst im Bau und Kunst am Bau!
Für 2008 wird daher ein »artists-in-residence-program« ins Leben gerufen.
Fünf jungen koreanischen Künstlern werden von ORCO für
ca. 1-2 Monate Atelierräume zur Verfügung gestellt. Die in Berlin
entstandenen Arbeiten sollen in einer abschließenden Ausstellung gezeigt
werden.
