4 Editorial Dear Reader, Recently, while looking for a new apartment, I was offered the option of obtaining a virtual image of my potential new neighbourhood. Certain providers now make it possible to literally spy over the neighbour‘s garden fence - thanks to satellites. But is a macro perspective snapshot really the right way to get an idea of a potential new neighbourhood’s ambience? I think not. The same goes for the city of Berlin. Looking at it from above, Berlin is a polarizing, heterogeneous place. For some, it is a real Mecca of creativity, for others, a lively business centre. To understand Berlin, one has to get down to the various microcosms and take the time to observe details, and make the right connections. Its diversity is reflected in our theme „Art for Everyone“. We introduce you to creative people representing the widest possible range of disciplines (actor Michael Greiling, p.12; designer and artist Guillaume Piéchaud p.86). We recount some of Berlin’s success stories in pictures (Lumas p.66) and present daring new concepts (Borderline Experiences p.58; Digital Theatre p.60) to entertain and excite the senses. Enhanced by Berlin-style design elements, whose power radiates out as far as New York (MoMa Shop p.26) and a company that, more than any other, is really committed to the sum of its parts (Bisazza p.99), we hope to inspire you with further pieces of Berlin‘s mosaic of creativity, as well as introduce two initiatives in the showplaces of the international art scene (Art Basel Miami Beach p.19; KIAF Korea p. 54). As if this is not enough to whet the appetite, in terms of the city‘s potential, we have asked three international protagonists for their Berlin stories (pp. 28, 64 and 94), and we have been given some surprising answers. For, just as the new face of Berlin is emerging from the old, so the interstices of this inevitably fragmented image of bundled creativity represent, for the observer, the substance of this most individual of cities. To widen this scope, we also reveal to you a selection of our HiddenPlaces (p.10), which are well worth a second look - and in some of them, one can even take a look from high up, too (p.84).
