Prussian Treasure
One seldom wanders into a library in today’s
internet age, but the reference library
in the German Historical Museum is definitely
worth a look. An architectural feast
for the eyes is in store for visitors to the
Reading Room, once the counter area of
the Prussian Cooperative Bank. The dazzling
wall mosaics and ornamental stone
floors are simply spectacular.
Im Zeitalter des Internets verirrt man sich nur
selten in eine Bibliothek. Die Präsenzbibliothek
des Deutschen Historischen Museums sollte
man sich aber auf keinen Fall entgehen lassen.
Der Lesesaal, der früher als Schalterhalle der
preußischen Genossenschaftsbank diente, offenbart
sich dem Besucher als architektonische Augenweide.
An den schillernden Wandmosaiken
und ornamentierten Steinfußböden kann man
sich einfach nicht sattsehen.

German Treat
The Japanese language has gained a German
word since staff at the Japanese Embassy
discovered the delicious »Baumkuchen«
made by the Buchwald confectionery bakery,
which opened 155 years ago. Prince
Leopold of Prussia found this delicious cake
so tasty that, around the end of the 19th
century, he even appointed Buchwald as
Court confectioner. Today, the fourth generation
of the family runs the business and
their granddaughter is already dreaming of
a sweet life. The heavens be praised!
Seitdem japanische Botschaftsangehörige den
leckeren Baumkuchen der 155 Jahre alten
Konditorei Buchwald für sich entdeckt haben,
ist Japans Sprachschatz um ein deutsches
Wort reicher. Schon Prinz Leopold von Preußen
mundete diese Delikatesse so sehr, dass er
Konditor Buchwald zum Hoflieferanten krönte.
Heute wird der Laden bereits in vierter Generation
geführt, und die Enkelin träumt auch vom
süßen Leben. Gott sei Dank!

French Connection
Although the Paris – Moskau Restaurant is
in the heart of Berlin, proprietor Wolfram
Ritschl has absolutely no neighbours - only
Mrs. Merkel could wave across at him from
the Federal Chancellery. Ritschl has turned
this most desirable site into an exciting
project: a restaurant as the connecting point
between east and west. The excellent offerings,
however, owe more to haute cuisine
than to »russkaja kuchnja«.
Obwohl das Restaurant Paris-Moskau mitten
im Herzen von Berlin steht, hat Besitzer Wolfram
Ritschl weit und breit keinen Nachbarn.
Nur Frau Merkel könnte vom Bundeskanzleramt
herüberwinken. Den exponierten Standort
hat Ritschl zum Programm gemacht: ein
Restaurant als Bindestrich zwischen Ost und
West. Die ausgezeichnete Küche ist allerdings
eher an der Haute Cuisine als an Russkaja
Kuchnja orientiert.
