18th MDG closure<br />

The 18th Medical Group will be closed for readiness training April 18 from noon to 5 p.m. The 18th MDG is closed for<br />

Mailing and receiving paintball or air soft guns<br />

Japanese customs restrict certain calibers of paintball and air soft guns. These guns are restricted to less than 3.5<br />

J/cm2 strength. Any gun with a higher strength will be confiscated. Please ensure specifications are checked prior to<br />

ordering and mailing the guns.<br />

Troy University military personnel scholarships<br />

Troy University has three new undergraduate scholarships designed to lessen the impact of nationwide cuts to the<br />

military tuition assistance programs.<br />

The three scholarships will discount undergraduate per-credit hour tuition to $250 for active-duty, Reserve and<br />

National Guard students who would otherwise be eligible for military tuition assistance.<br />

The scholarships are available to both full and part-time undergraduate students through the final term of the 2013-<br />

2014 academic year, and apply to both in-classroom and online courses.<br />

2013 <strong>Air</strong> Force Marathon PACAF team nominations<br />

The Pacific <strong>Air</strong> Forces’ services will sponsor two female and two male runners to represent PACAF at the 2013 <strong>Air</strong><br />

Force Marathon Sept. 21 at Wright-Patterson <strong>Air</strong> Force <strong>Base</strong>, Ohio.<br />

Interested individuals should submit an <strong>Air</strong> Force Form 303 (request for United States <strong>Air</strong> Force specialized sports<br />

training) to installation fitness center director, Reeta Meana at narita.meana.5@us.af.mil. no later than April 17.<br />

The AF Form 303 must be signed by the applicant’s supervisor and unit commander and is considered permissive<br />

TDY.<br />

every Thursday. This event is open to all Status of Forces Agreement members, cadets ages 12-19 and senior<br />

members 19 or older. This is a great opportunity to get involved in the community and learn about aviation.<br />

The legal office has extended hours every second and fourth Wednesday of the month from 4:30-7 p.m. for notaries<br />

<strong>Kadena</strong> Tax Center is open<br />

The <strong>Kadena</strong> Tax Center, Bldg. 1460, is open Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. for walk-in services, and<br />

Saturday is by appointment only, for commanders, taxpayers with rental properties, home child care businesses and<br />

Department of Defense Dependents School personnel. The tax center also offers a drop-off service. Bring tax<br />

documents, bank info and any other forms needed to prepare the return and they will call when the return is ready for<br />

pick up.<br />

HVAC maintenance<br />

Okinawa is on the brink of cooling season and the 18th Civil Engineer Squadron wants to let everyone know that to<br />

keep their air conditioner working efficiently, remember to clean the filters if t<strong>here</strong> is a small air conditioner in the work<br />

space. If t<strong>here</strong> is a central cooling type of system, clean the vents a minimum of once a month. 18th CES personnel<br />

will handle the big maintenance of the systems and it is the occupants or building managers’ responsibility to clean<br />

the dirt off of their own vents.<br />

<strong>Kadena</strong>’s unaccompanied housing is looking for highly motivated staff sergeants and technical sergeants to fill vacant<br />

Virtual Space A Roll Call program<br />

The 733rd <strong>Air</strong> Mobility Squadron hosts the first-ever virtual Space Available Roll Call program. The program allows<br />

individuals the option to virtually compete for Space A flights with their email. This new initiative is more convenient<br />

for their customers and the 733rd AMS will be testing the program through July 31.<br />

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Scholarship<br />

The Okinawa Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is accepting applications for their annual<br />

scholarship award program that recognizes Department of Defense Dependents Schools high school graduates who<br />

plan to participate in a higher education program.<br />

Applications are available through senior high school guidance counselors or by contacting a member of the Chapter.<br />

All applications must be turned in to the senior high school guidance counselor by April 30 at 2:30 p.m.

AFN changing to single satellite frequency<br />

The American Forces Network is reducing the number of satellite transponder frequencies used to provide AFN<br />

television and radio service in the Asia/Pacific region April 22. Customers using an AFN decoder and satellite dish,<br />

including cable providers and U.S. consulates/embassies, must check their AFN decoder settings to ensure they are<br />

on the correct satellite frequency to continue to receive AFN service.<br />

If customers are not on the correct AFN satellite frequency, they will lose all AFN satellite radio and TV channels after<br />

the change occurs. Customers may use the information posted on http://SatChange.myafn.net to identify the model of<br />

their AFN decoder and the satellite frequency the AFN decoder currently is tuned to.<br />

The website lists the correct frequency the AFN decoder needs to be set on and provides detailed instructions on<br />

how to successfully change it via their decoder menu and settings.<br />

STEM Week<br />

Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics week is April 22-25 at Ryukyu Middle School. It is a week of<br />

hands-on fun for kids, adults and of learning about how much these types of activities can be fun and can increase<br />

knowledge and interest.<br />

Wing needs CAA, FTAC NCOIC<br />

The wing is looking for a master sergeant to serve as the career assistance advisor and a technical sergeant to serve<br />

as the First Term <strong>Air</strong>men Center NCO in charge. Volunteers must submit their application no later than April 19. The<br />

selected individuals must be releasable to begin CAA duties on or around December 1 and for FTAC NCOIC on or<br />

around July 1.<br />

The McDaniel Center is responsible for the professional development of more than 5,000 Team <strong>Kadena</strong> <strong>Air</strong>men<br />

through programs like FTAC, Informed Decision, retention analysis, unit visits, and multiple other professional<br />

enhancement seminars.<br />

NCOA needs instructors<br />

The Erwin Professional Military Education Center NCO Academy is currently hiring two individuals for NCOA<br />

instructor positions.<br />

If you are interested in this opportunity to help develop future AF leaders, please check the Assignment Management<br />

System for more details, talk with your supervisor first, click the button, and submit your application to be an NCOA<br />

PME Instructor.<br />

T<strong>here</strong> are some limitations on who can apply, individuals with SRB's are not eligible, must not already have an<br />

assignment and members must be a technical sergeant with no line number for master sergeant and have completed<br />

NCOA.<br />

The Ad will run through April 28 in AMS and has a return no later than date of August. Those selected for the position<br />

will be required to attend the July 24 through August 20 Enlisted PME Instructor Course at Maxwell <strong>Air</strong> Force <strong>Base</strong>,<br />

AL. They must then report directly to the Erwin PME Center upon completion to start the training process.<br />

Previous PME experience is highly desirable and may not require the need to attend EPMEIC.<br />

April 9-12<br />

DoDEA Okinawa hosts spring registration drive


The spring registration drive is in the Ryukyu Middle School’s gymnasium and cafeteria April 9-12 from 8 a.m. to noon<br />

for families with children who will attend Sure Start (Pre-kindergarten) through 12th grade for the 2013-2014 school<br />

years. All students attending Department of Defense Education Activity Okinawa schools must re-register for the next<br />

school year, and this process enables the district to project student enrollment and maintain current student<br />

information. This year’s registration drive offers families with children in multiple schools to re-register, or to register<br />

for the next school year, one place to do so. Student transportation officials and registrars from all 13 DoDEA schools<br />

will be on hand to answer any questions and assist parents in completing the registration process.<br />

Sponsors will be asked to revalidate current information including your current quarters address, telephone numbers<br />

and emergency contacts. If your quarters have changed, bring your current on-base housing assignment letter or offbase<br />

lease with a map to your house. Active-duty sponsors must bring a copy of extension orders if their orders will<br />

expire before Aug. 30. Civilian sponsors must bring their current year certificate of employment letter to verify full-time<br />

employment or renewal agreement travel orders.<br />

Kindergarten registration will be available for children who will be age 5 by Sept. 1. New students will need sponsor’s<br />

orders/extension or verification of employment, birth certificate or passport, immunization records, and a copy of<br />

current housing assignment letter/off-base housing lease. Sure Start applications will also be available for students<br />

who will be age 4 by Sept. 1.<br />

good behaviors and more.<br />

Bataan memorial march<br />

The Bataan memorial march is April 13 at 7 a.m. at the Keystone Theater. Please come out and join the <strong>Kadena</strong> Top<br />

The Top 3 recommends participants bring appropriate clothing/shoes, Camelback or water bottle (water locations will<br />

be located every 1.5-2 miles), a rucksack, and energy snacks.<br />

Hazardous Waste Accumulation Point Manager's training class<br />

The hazardous Waste Accumulation Point Manager’s training class is April 18 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the<br />

Environmental office, Bldg. 3621. Registration for the class begins at 8 a.m. Admission to the class for primary and<br />

alternate accumulation point managers requires a copy of their current appointment letter. Unit environmental<br />

coordinators also require a current appointment letter. Supervisors who are required to attend but are not active in the<br />

management of the accumulation point and personnel taking the class for familiarization may attend without<br />

documentation. A final exam concludes the class.<br />

<strong>Kadena</strong> CGOC Golf Tournament<br />

The Company Grade Officer's Council golf tournament is April 19 starting at 7 a.m. To participate in the tournament,<br />

and a cart. For $10 extra, participants will get one mulligan, a throw, tee option, and six feet of string.<br />

IYLO clinic<br />

An Island Youth Lacrosse Okinawa clinic will be April 27 at <strong>Kadena</strong> Outdoor Recreation. "Learning Lacrosse" is a<br />

clinic designed to develop kids’ skills and interest in the sport of lacrosse.<br />

The clinic is $20 for two hours of dedicated lessons and fun games that teach the fundamentals of the sport and<br />

advanced skills for those kids who have played before for children 5 to 15 years of age. Gear will be provided.<br />

Proceeds go to the non-profit IYLO effort to sustain the league and pay for storage and operating costs. This is the<br />

second to last clinic before summer break.<br />
