DAY
ANZACs @ Brooklyn
Continued from Front Cover
By LCDR Mick Gallagher
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning.
We will remember them.
At the invitation of Ken Shadie,
President Brooklyn RSL Sub
Branch, I attended the Brooklyn
2013 ANZAC Service on Sunday
14 April and carried out the duties
of Master of Ceremonies.
Joining me on parade were
fellow Naval personnel: Petty
guided missile frigate HMAS
Newcastle, and POMT Tony
Mills of Hornsby now serving
in the small ships base HMAS
Sydney Harbour.
At the outbreak of WW1,
Brooklyn was there to answer
the call.
“Ninety eight years ago as the
dawn began to break Syd Cain
at ANZAC Cove ….Syd never
made it home. He was one
TOO BIG TO IGNORE!
In the follow up of the Launch of www.
QUOTES from local small business:
Steve, Franchise holder: “I work
5 – 6 days a week plus do a lot
of administrative work re quoting,
invoicing, receipting etc after
hours. In addition my wife does
all the book keeping and does not
do we get from the government
Nothing but fees & charges for
Lesley Burt, Hornsby Kuring-gai
Community College: “The legal
accountability of small business
has become very onerous.”
Anne, small business owner:
“Some weeks I pay all my staff
but there is nothing left over for
for nothing so I can provide
Maintenance work on Peats Ferry Bridge over
Hawkesbury River at Brooklyn
Roads and Maritime Services is continuing vital maintenance work on
the two-lane Peats Ferry Bridge over the Hawkesbury River at Brooklyn.
This involves full bridge closures during night work and occasional onelane
closures during the day.
From Sunday 28 April 2013, night work will be carried out
Sunday to Thursday from 9pm to 5am and will require a full
closure of the bridge.
During day work, one traffic lane will remain open on the bridge. Minor
delays may occur.
Emergency vehicle access will be maintained at all times. Work on the
bridge will not impact on water traffic.
When the bridge is closed at night, road access to Brooklyn and the
Pacific Highway will be maintained via specially marked detours.
Please follow the signs, drive with care and allow extra travel time.
The current phase of work is scheduled to be completed in July 2013,
weather permitting.
Roads and Maritime Services apologises for any inconvenience and
appreciates your patience.
Self-Managed
Super Fuss

reading another story about selfmanaged
superannuation funds
(SMSF). According to the Australian

super funds, which include SMSF,
manage more assets than either
industry or retail funds.
Australia’s love of investment
property is one factor driving SMSF
growth. But there must be more
fuelling the desire to control our
super, because running a SMSF
may be only for the well organised.

(ATO) monitors SMSFs and their
website (ato.gov.au) has some very
helpful information. Before doing
any further research make sure
you have a clear retirement plan
and an honest view of your money
management skills.
Even reckless mistakes can result

thinking about an SMSF, don’t
underestimate the work and partner
C’mon, GetUp! … says Nicole
In light of the coming election, Nicole
Tomlin of Berowra wants to draw
Bush Tele readers’ attention to a local
GetUp! group which has been formed.
Nicole said, “A group of residents
met on 21 March 2013 to discuss
the issues that we believe are
most important to the people in this
area. This meeting was one of 400
grass-roots, political GetTogethers
hosted across Australia on that day,
backed by advocacy group GetUp!
and designed to encourage locals to
come together and discuss important
political issues in the lead-up to the

For this local group, the three most
important issues are:
Vision statement
All parties need to publish a vision
statement, and a plan for governance
that agrees with their vision.
Climate change
• Australia needs to become less
reliant on fossil fuels by developing
incentives to use and invest in
renewable energy sources.
• How will the Federal Government
address the impact of rising
temperatures
Education
• Public and tertiary education policies
need to be a priority.
• Education should be affordable and
accessible to all.
• The National Broadband Network
(NBN) needs to be completed to assist
in both education and health.

by the group were an end to coal
seam gas exploration and fracking,
logging of old-growth forests, the
current treatment of asylum-seekers
and live export of animals. Other
issues requiring voter support are the
National Disability Insurance Scheme,
affordability of housing for the young,

industries, which needs to be exacted

“We call on the major parties to
publish a vision statement before the
September election, outlining exactly
what their vision is for Australia, with a

Nicole said that it is important for all
Australians to consider what issues
Australia’s political parties should be
addressing when formulating current
and future policies.
“Many young people in the Berowra
electorate will be voting for the very

clear on the major parties’ platforms,
how will these new voters be able
to make informed, clear, individual
decisions when it comes to casting

“In times of uncertainty, people often
end up voting for the party they or
their family have always supported,
when in fact this is the time to make a
critically needed change. The key is to
vote on the issues that matter to you
and for whoever you think is going to
do something about them, rather than

through the engagement of people
in the political process, through the
discussion and debate of ideas about

Anyone who is interested in joining in will be
very welcome at future GetTogethers. Email
BUSH TELE LETTERS
Dear BT,
On behalf of Kath Ross, Debbie Cole, Jess Stein
and Ian Brown, we would like to again say a huge
thank you to the Berowra Rotary Club for their
generosity in sending us all to the Rotary Youth
Leadership Awards (RYLA).
RYLA is a week-long leadership course that is truly
a once in a lifetime opportunity. It is a life changing
experience that we will never forget and one that
we hope other young Berowra leaders will be able
to experience in the future, with the hope that they
get as much out of it as we did, if not more.
Once again thank you to the Berowra Rotary Club.
RYLA Awardees
Dear BT,
Re: Cr Nathan Tilbury Response to Mr Marr’s
Letter in 11th April 2013 Edition.

response he states, “The new aquatic centre is on
schedule to be opened in early 2014 and will be a
fantastic facility for everyone”.
There has been too much fantasy over the years
regarding this aquatic centre, now that it looks as
if it may actually be completed and made available
to the long suffering public, surely a more
appropriate adjective regarding the facility would
have been “realistic”.
Cr Tilbury, colloquialisms have no place in the
written word.
E.R. Whitmore, Wahroonga
Dear BT,
In responding to Cr Tilbury’s letter (TBTW 11-4-13)
about the size of the new Hornsby pool.
I, like many others, saw plans and drawing of the
proposed construction of the 50m pool and a 10m
learn to swim pool as there was much community
unrest about the need for HSC to demolish the
CWA building for a driveway so cars can be
parked underneath the pool.
Although I have seen some concept drawings for
the indoor 25m pool, waterslides and diving pools,
there were some issues about where to put them.
So if Cr Tilbury has actual council-passed plans
for these features I’d be interested in seeing them.
I’m sure many people will be using these added

But the fact remains that many people north of
Hornsby will not have access to them and there
are no plans to build any major facilities north
of Hornsby despite them paying more than their
share in S94 funds and levies.
Mick Marr, online
Dear BT,
The Future of the “New Side”

recently when motorists ventured out on a rainy

During the last year or so, it has become quite
noticeable how the number of shoppers at
Hornsby has increased but no improvements
appear to have been made to adjacent roads

over 10 years ago, Council pocketed funds from
the closure of public laneways, rather than widen
existing roads surrounding the shopping centre.

shopping centre, including most of the entries and

One wonders what it will be like in a few years
in both the “Old Side” and the “New Side” if
improvements to infrastructure do not keep pace
with population increase.
HORNSBY STYLE!
Hornsby Musical Society has been producing quality musical theatre to
the Shire since 1968 and their current production of “GREASE” will be
no exception.
“GREASE” is a raw look at teenagers from the 1950’s facing the challenges of
girl/boy relationships.
You didn’t need to grow up in the 50’s to recognise the music and songs. First
performed in 1971 “GREASE” still holds 14th place in the list of long running
shows on Broadway.
The production is directed by Phyllis Horne who has over 30 shows to her
credit. She is ably assisted by David Morgan as Musical Director and Laurie
Tancred as Choreographer.
“Grease” is a local production that must not be missed!
HEALTH AND BEAUTY
Priceless
Pearls
By Ralph Estherby
I have forgotten the name of my
year 2 teacher in primary school. I
have forgotten how to do quadratic
equations. I have forgotten where
the really nice Indian restaurant was
in Pymble that I used to visit. I have
forgotten appointments that I made but
didn’t write down. I have forgotten to
bring home the milk. I have forgotten
people and different incidents from my
past. I have forgotten many things as I
am sure you have as well. But this week
is a week where we are challenged to
remember.
ANZAC Day is a day set aside to recall
all of those men and women who have
served their country by giving their
lives in wars or military operations to
protect and secure our future. In each
generation we have had people who
have stood up to take their place in
the defence of our nation and have
paid the ‘ultimate sacrifice’ for their
devotion. All around our nation we
stand silently in remembrance as we
listen to the words of “The Ode” and in
unison we respond with
“Lest we forget”.
It is both a remembrance and a call
to each of us to keep the memory of
significant action and a demonstration
of love alive.
If one generation fails to remember
then who will pass it to the next
I am always encouraged by the
number of people who prove their
remembrance by attending an ANZAC
event. It is both a sign of national
pride and a sign of faithfulness and
appreciation.
I know that as I work with members
of the ADF this remembrance is
appreciated and valued more than you
know.
Jesus said “Greater love has no one
than this, than to lay down one’s life for
his friends”
John 15:13
So, I thank you for remembering the
ANZACs this week, I thank you for
remembering all those who follow in
their example but I also encourage you
never to forget the One who gave His
life for us all so that we need not fear
death.
So no matter how many things you
have forgotten, no matter if everything
that was poured into your mind at
school has fallen out – let’s not forget
those things that really matter and let’s
together say… “Lest we forget”.
HEEL PAIN
“It is not necessary to
put up with HEEL PAIN,”
says Mrs Chard
PODIATRIST.
There are several causes of heel
pain, the most common being
PLANTAR FASCIITIS
Plantar Fasciitis is simply inflammation
of the big strong band on the bottom
of the foot (the plantar fascia).
Symptoms usually begin as a ‘stone
bruise’ type of pain, increasing to
chronic pain, especially first thing in
the morning or after rest.
This kind of pain is easily treated by
realigning the foot and leg, which
reduces the trauma, allowing the
injured foot to repair.
Q. What is the big Deal
about Trees these days
Protect your property– Wet ground and wind can make
trees unstable. Crown reduction and canopy balance can
save trees from failing in the ground.
Feeling Safe– Selective pruning and/or tree removal can
eliminate DANGER of STORM DAMAGE, dropping limbs and
branches.
Looking Good – Pruning trees helps maintain
FORM and VITALITY.
4. No Council Permit required – for most jobs.
