selous
Africa’s largest game reserve, Selous offers a true
wilderness experience in the south of the country. Home to
over half of Tanzania’s elephant population, game drives,
bush walks and boating safaris take place amongst forest,
bushland and by the mighty Rufiji river, providing varied
and rewarding game experiences. Ideal for repeat visitors
to Tanzania.
eastern cape
The rolling hills of the Eastern Cape offer malaria-free and
family friendly Big Five (buffalo, elephant, lion, leopard and
rhino) game viewing with breathtaking vistas. Awardwinning
reserves, including Shamwari Game Reserve (p153)
and Kariega Game Reserve (p152), and vast national parks
host a range of activities. Well-suited to first time visitors
and families.
kruger
Vast and iconic, Kruger National Park and its adjacent
private reserves boast more species of mammal than any
other African game reserve, including the Big Five and
endangered African wild dog. Combined with open
savannah, bushland, seasonal riverbeds and mountain
views, the park is deservedly popular – but has excellent
private concessions around the park and pockets of remote
wilderness, too.
namibia
etosha
One of the oldest conservation sites in Africa, Etosha sustains
a huge variety of mammals and birdlife including the
endangered black rhino and rare gemsbok. Dominated by the
extensive Etosha salt pan, predators and plains game here are
attracted to the waterholes, creating particularly prolific
wildlife viewing during the dry season (June to November).
Namib-Naukluft
A landscape of rugged mountains, vast desert, magnificent
burnt orange sand dunes, river canyons and clay pans, it is
perhaps surprising that Namib-Naukluft sustains any life at
all – and yet hyena, gemsbok, jackal and unique plantlife all
survive in this hyper-arid region. See the spectacular Dead
Vlei: a forest frozen in time, and a dawn visit to the world’s
highest sand dunes at Sossuvelei is a magical experience.
madagascar
Cast adrift in the Indian Ocean, Madagascar has
extraordinary flora and fauna all of its own, with more than
70 species of lemur, remarkable endemic bird life and the
world’s largest chameleon. Combined with its hugely
diverse landscapes and fascinating culture, this is wildlife
viewing with a difference.
botswana
okavango delta
The Okavango’s beautiful maze of islands and winding
waterways provides welcome habitat for hippo and
crocodile, whilst lush forests conceal lion, elephant and
antelope. Mokoro canoe trips and game viewing on foot
offer wonderful alternatives to game drives and Botswana
is often seen as the ultimate exclusive safari experience.
chobe
With four ecosystems ranging from swampland to dense
forest, Chobe National Park is an excellent area to spot all
major African species including a huge elephant population
– around 60,000 large Kalahari elephants migrate from the
riverfront to the southeast pans during the wet season.
rwanda
Mountain gorillas and chimpanzees offer unforgettable
safari experiences in pristine wilderness. Rwanda is one
of Africa’s smallest countries but its culture, landscape
and high primate sightings offer some of the most
rewarding experiences.
