System Description
General
HeatSeal ® is HeatLink Group Inc.’s flexible insulated
pipe system. It is designed for lower range temperatures
applications, such as small and medium-sized district
and local heating networks. Industrial and agricultural
uses include: waste water systems and refrigeration
plants. HeatSeal’s durability and flexibility are its
strength.
HeatSeal pipe consists of: a cross-linked polyethylene
carrier pipe 1 that is thermally insulated with foam 2,
and is encased in an HDPE sheath 3.
3
2
HeatSeal’s flexibility permits substantial savings during
excavation work. The pipe is able to traverse above
and below obstacles, and defying the restraints of
conventional pipeline construction the shortest route
is an option. HeatSeal is supplied in one piece to the
building site in the required length (normally in coils).
This allows for narrower pipe trenches, as HeatSeal
can be laid in the ground with few or none connecting
points. HeatSeal can also be used in horizontal drilling
applications where trenching is not an option.
The simple rapid installation and laying of HeatSeal
pipe, leads to time and cost savings as the coordination
work on the building site is reduced. The physical
properties of the PEX pipe permit laying without
formalized expansion points. When connecting pieces
are needed, they are fitted quickly and securely with
conventional non-ferrous metal unions.
1
Bending Radius
1 The cross-linked polyethylene carrier pipe possesses
excellent thermal characteristics. It is resistant to
corrosion and chemicals, and it is easy to work with. It
is pollutant-free and therefore environmentally friendly.
2 The foam insulation consists of a CFC-free, flexible
crossed-linked polyethylene foam with outstanding heat
insulation properties.
3 The casing is an HDPE sheath that protects both the
carrier pipe and the insulating material from external
influences. Its corrugation pattern provides flexibility in
the longitudinal direction and excellent rigidity against
radial forces. It is watertight and resistant to aggressive
substances.
• Dig a vertical trench for trench depths up to 120 cm (48"). A V-shaped trench is recommended for trenches deeper
than 120 cm (48"). Check and follow local codes.
• Excavation works must be carried out in the approved manner, according to the rules and regulations of local
authorities. A prior permission is very often required.
• The depth of the trench must be in accordance with the guidelines of p. 11. These guidelines relate to the laying of
HeatSeal ® pipes.
• Obtain a land register plan to eliminate possible conflicts with existing or future utilities and structures.
• Once the pipe is laid, mark the route with warning tape, and update the land register office with the details.
ATTENTION:
Minimum laying temperature for HeatSeal ® pipes: -5°C (23°F).
Installation Instructions
Pressure test
1. Pressure test and rinsing according to DIN 1900 Part 2
As evidence to the customer of the work carried out, section 3.1.13 of the new DIN 18581 relating to general technical specifications
in contracts for construction works (ATV) envisages that, as one of the “relevant accompanying documents’, a log concerning the
pressure test conducted should be issued and handed over to the customer. In this log, which should be confirmed by the customer or his
authorized representative, the plumber verifies that his work satisfies recognized engineering rules and the contractual obligations (as
a secondary performance to be provided in accordance with VOB tendering and performance stipulations In contracts for construction
works, Part B, § 4 and § 13). Pressure tests constitute contractually agreed auxiliary work essential to the accomplishment of the
contract that also forms part of the contractor’s performance without being stated in the performance specification.
2. Flushing the pipe system
For corrosion protection reasons the elaborate procedure of rinsing the system with an air/water mixture as described in DIN 1988
Part 2 need not be carried out. Coarse foreign particles can be removed simply by flushing the pipe system with water.
3. Pressure test
Pressure test procedure is obligatory. Prior to concealing, fill the finished pipe-work with water, taking care to avoid air bubbles. The
pressure test must be conducted in two parts, starting with the preliminary test, followed by the main test.
Preliminary test
The preliminary test involves applying a test pressure equal to 1.5 times the admissible operating pressure. This pressure must be
regenerated twice within the space of 30 minutes at intervals of 10 minutes. Following a test period of another 30 minutes, the test
pressure must not have fallen by more than 0.6 bar (8.7 psi) (0.1 bar (1.45 psi) per minute). Leakages must not occur.
Main test
The main test must be conducted immediately after the preliminary test. The test takes 2 hours. At the end of this period, the test
pressure recorded after the preliminary test must not have fallen by more than 0.2 bar (2.9 psi). Leakages must not occur at any point
in the system being tested.
Remarks:
A further factor that may influence the test result can be caused by the temperature difference between the pipe and test medium
caused by the high coefficient of thermal expansion of plastic pipes. A temperature change of 10°K (18°F) corresponds approximately
to a pressure change of 0.5 to 1 bar (7.25 to 14.5 psi). For this reason, every effort should be made to ensure that the temperature of
the test medium, remains constant when carrying out pressure tests on system components made from plastic pipes. In this context it
is important to carry out a visual inspection of all joints while the pressure test is in progress since experience has shown that minor
leakages cannot always be detected by simply monitoring a pressure gauge.
Instructions for laying HeatSeal ® pipes in earth
HeatSeal ® pipelines can be laid in earth without difficulties. The corrugated jacket provides the necessary protection for
the insulating material and the medium pipe. Groundwater has no influence on the HeatSeal ® system. The pipes may be
uncoiled directly into the trench. This may only be done by pulling the carrier pipes (do never pull the jacket). When
uncoiling the pipe, please take care to ensure that the pipe is not dragged along the ground or is damaged by sharp objects
and that outside pipe ends don’t whip back when untying the textile straps. The bending radii (see product data sheet)
must not fall below the prescribed minimum neither during installation nor in the final position of the pipeline. Pipes
must be laid in a serpentine course and may be covered with sand at regular intervals. General guidelines for laying
underground pipes must be followed meticulously. When laying larger dimensions and lengths, pulling devices such as
winches or tail-end rollers may be used. Always connect these devices to the carrier pipe. The carrier pipe must be fitted
with protective end caps preventing the entry of dirty particles.
Backfilling guidelines & warning tape
Carefully place the HeatSeal ® pipeline on a compacted 10 cm bed of sand on the bottom of the trench (size B on page
11). The quality of this sand bed providing uniform support for the pipe line has a decisive influence on the compressive
stress of the system. Make sure that the pipes are fully covered with sand (granulometry of 0-3mm). Backfilling should
be in layers of about 20 cm (8") and compacted by hand. Care should be taken to remove any sharp objects from the
backfill material. When the backfill has been brought to about 50 cm (20") above the top of the pipe, a vibrating tamper
may be used to compact the remainder of the soil. There should also be a warning tape bearing the legend “water pipe”
laid directly above the duct.
Installation Instructions
Installation instructions onto walls or ceilings
For this purpose, the pipe must be supported every 1 m (3') along its entire length because of the flexibility. To avoid bending,
the pipe must be tied with straps to a supporting structure.
100 cm
Guidelines for pipes lying on the ground
If the pipeline is laid on the ground, points of support must be provided to prevent slipping away. On uneven ground, the
pipe should be tied at intervals of about 25 m (80'), and care must be taken to ensure that the pipes are well supported. For
this purpose a supporting structure can be set up (see 3.7).
HeatSeal ® pipes must be protected against direct UV radiation.
Guidelines the use of heat-shrink sleeves
• Slide the sleeve over the carrier pipe and the jacket.
• Use a heat gun or mini torch with soft yellow flame (do NOT use a blue flame!) to gently shrink the sleeve.
• Press the sleeve, wearing protective gloves.
• The tail end of the pipe is now sealed watertight.
Guidelines for HeatSeal ® insulated casings
When a HeatSeal ® twin pipe is to be connected in an
insulated casing, we recommend choosing a superposition
of the pipes rather than juxtaposition. This method makes
the assembly of the terminal connections in the casing
much easier.
Holes in both shell-shaped casings (top and bottom are
identical) are rough-drilled.
The shells are designed for enclosing pipe jackets of 125,
160 or 200 mm in diameter. Shells can be cut along a
chosen line obtaining the desired diameter.
10 cm
Strip a sufficient length of the PEX-a pipes of their
insulation and jacket (be careful not to damage the pipes)
so as to put the terminal connection in the centre. Make
sure that the pre-insulated HeatSeal ® pipe passes the 200
mm jacket diameter mark by 10 cm (4").
One of the two shells can be used as a template to define
the desired distance between the carrier pipes.
We recommend the use of 81100 Series “Wet” shrink
caps.
Securing the pipe
In a trench:
Care must be taken to ensure that a serpentine line is maintained.
In order to keep the pipes in the desired position, the trench may be backfilled with sand at regular intervals.
In buildings:
Fixed point brackets have to be installed, ideally at entry of buildings. Such brackets fixed onto the carrier pipes intercept
their contraction and expansion.
A minor insulation retreat - a common phenomenon - may occur during installation.
