Asia possibly through the Arabian Peninsula.
From Asia, there were dispersals into Africa
and Australasia, all around 5 Ma. The origin
of the New World species is ambiguous; the
ancestral may have dispersed from Asia via
the Beringian Strait or from Africa over the
Atlantic, about 3 Ma. We found no evidence
for vicariance at the intercontinental scale. We
argue that dispersal is as important as
vicariance, if not more, in the global
diversification of butterflies.

The Charipinae have been little studied in
the Neotropical region. There are only three
species in South America and some identifications
are erroneous. In this work, all the species
of Charipinae from South America were
studied and two new species are described:
Apocharips angelicae Pujade-Villar and
Evenhuis sp. n. and Alloxysta desantisi Pujade-Villar
and Díaz sp. n. New synonyms
also are given. Several unusual morphological
features of Apocharips angelicae are discussed
and illustrated. Finally, we argue that
the genera Bothriocynips and Emargo are
synonymous.

A re-examination of the type material of the
atelostomate echinoid Enallopneustes Pomel
reveals that the type species E. jullieni (Peron
& Gauthier) represents small specimens of
Hemipneustes Agassiz. A new genus, Medjesia,
is erected for E. meslei Gauthier, the only
other species previously ascribed to Enallopneustes-a
form with a Hemipneustes-like
plastron, a marginal fasciole and an ethmophract
apical system. Full descriptions of both
these species are presented and details of plastron
structure are given for the first time.
