Ecological gradients within a Pennsylvanian
mire forest. ( 英 文 ). DiMichele W A; Falcon-
Geology, 2007, 35(5): 415-418
Pennsylvanian coals represent remains of
the earliest peat-forming rain forests, but there
is no current consensus on forest ecology. Localized
studies of fossil forests suggest intermixture
of taxa (heterogeneity), while, in contrast,
coal ball and palynological analyses imply
the existence of pronounced ecological
gradients. Here, we report the discovery of a
spectacular fossil forest preserved over 1000
ha on top of the Pennsylvanian (Desmoinesian)
Herrin (No. 6) Coal of Illinois, United
States. The forest was abruptly drowned when
fault movement dropped a segment of coastal
mire below sea level. In the largest study of its
kind to date, forest composition is statistically
analyzed within a well-constrained paleogeographic
context. Findings resolve apparent
conflicts in models of Pennsylvanian mire
ecology by confirming the existence of forest
heterogeneity at the local scale, while additionally
demonstrating the emergence of ecological
gradients at landscape scale.
= Neoproterozoic microfossils from the Officer
Basin, Western Australia. ( 英 文 ). Cotter K
L. Alcheringa, 1997, 21(3/4): 247-270
Microfossil assemblages are described from
the early Neoproterozoic Madley and Browne
Formations, western Officer Basin. One chert
and eleven siliciclastic samples yielded microfossils.
Myxococcoides cantabrigiensis occurs
as pustular mats in the chert sample and Eomicrocystis
malgica, Pterospermopsimorpha
granulata, Skiagia sp. cf. S. pusilla, and undetermined
species of Obruchevella, Heliconema,
and Trachystrichosphaera are present
in acid macerated samples. Leiosphaeridia spp.
and Siphonophycus spp. are also found in finegrained
siliciclastic samples, with clusters of
Synsphaeridium sp. in some samples. These
findings enable a more substantial reconstruction
of the palaeoenvironment of Supersequence
1 in the western Centralian Superbasin.
The acanthomorph acritarchs are considered to
be planktonic eucaryotes washed into environments
which ranged from coastal sabkha
through to tidal flats, which may be the source
of the prokaryotic, benthic, matforming
cyanobacteria.
Research, 1996, 17(2): 197-214
The disconformable contact across the Jurassic-Cretaceous
boundary on the south-east
flanks of Mount Hermon, Israel was studied
palynologically. The youngest Jurassic sediments
(Beer-Sheva and Haluza Formation J6-
J7) are of late Oxfordian age. Miospores,
probably of (late) Berriasian age, were discovered
within sediments in a volcanic sequence,
the E’Shatr sequence, above the contact,
and are considered to be the oldest Cretaceous
fossils in northern Israel. Overlying
clastic sediments (basal Hatira Formation,
‘Nubian Sandstone’ equivalent) previously
thought to be devoid of fossils yielded miospores
and dinoflagellate cysts deposited during
a transgressive pulse of probable late Barremian
age. The new combination of the spore
speciesBiretisporites aegyptiacanov. comb. is
proposed.
