SONARANGE ULTRASONIC SENSORS

2
UPK series
The outstanding feature of the UPK series is its high acoustic power combined with small sensor
®
size. This is achieved with new optimized SONARANGE -transducers, working at high electrical
voltages. Thus also small, moving and poorly reflecting objects can be safely detected. Moreover
the sensors work also under high contamination.
With a length of < 40 mm the UPK sensors are the most compact ultrasonic sensors for that wide
measuring ranges.
UPR-A CP series
5
Ultrasonic distance and proximity sensors
Oil resistant
resistant against chemicals (PVDF/PTFE housings) ®
The UPR-A CP series sensors are specially designed for use in a chemically
harsh environment. The high resistance is based on PVDF or PTFE material.
A typical application is the level measurement of acids and alkalis in
smaller containers. This sensor is based on UPR-A 1500.
The front part exposed to the medium is made of PVDF, upon request also
of PTFE. Both materials are extremely robust and resistant. The outstanding
feature is the ultrasonic transducer which is PTFE foil covered but transparent
for ultrasonic waves. The rear part of the sensor with connector is
not resistant against chemicals.
For OEM applications the shape of the housing can be ordered customized.
Thanks to the new transducer sealing made of Viton the UPR-A sensors are
very robust against many environmental influences. In particular they are oil
resistant, unlike many other ultrasonic sensors.
The UPX sensors are fast ultrasonic proximity switches. Thanks to the new
®
transducer sealing made of Viton the UPX sensors are very robust against
many environmental influences. In particular, they are oil resistant, unlike
many other ultrasonic sensors.
The main difference between the two UPX models is their different shape of
detection beam.
UPS series
7
The ultrasonic sensors of the UPS series are particularly small and they
have a narrow detection beam. Thus they are well suited to detect objects
in the near range up to 200 mm and under confined conditions.
The UPS sensors are available as well as pure proximity switches as also as
distance sensors with analogue mA or V output. The switching or measuring
distances can be learned by a teach-in procedure.
UPS series FB (Focus BEAM)
Miniature sensor with focusing device for smallest containers
The ultrasonic sensors of the UPS 150 FB series are equipped with a
focusing device made of glass fiber reinforced polypropylene which makes
the sound beam particularly narrow.
Therefore they are suitable in the near range up to 150 mm to sence
through narrow openings. A typical application is measuring of liquid level
in small tubes or containers.
UPS Series CP
Miniature sensor with chemically resistant head
The diaphragm of the series UPS 150 CP is coated with a thin PTFE foil.
The head made of chemically resistant PVDF serves as mechanical fixation for
the foil and protection of the sensor front part.
Thus the front part of the ultrasonic sensor becomes resistant to most
chemicals.
UPB series
®
SONARANGE THROUGH BEAM
Ultrasonic sensors are perfectly suited for detection of objects with very different
surfaces and under difficult environmental conditions such as dust, dirt, fog or
bright light.
A disadvantage is their relatively low measuring speed, caused by the slow speed
of sound compared e.g. to the speed of light. Moreover the so-called blind range
of ultrasonic scanner type sensors – transmitter and receiver in the same sensor –
might be sometimes a disadvantage, too.
Those disadvantages are eliminated with the ultrasonic barrier UPB. In the same
way as with a light barrier, the full range between transmitter and receiver can be
used. There is no blind range. The measuring speed of 200 Hz is very high as well.
The high measuring speed combined with the large measuring range of 1500 mm
are the outstanding characteristics of the UPB ultrasonic through beam sensors.
UPB equipped with hole orifice for counting small
parts
Application hint
Features
Testing punch holes in packaging
By means of a hole orifice in front of the receiver the ultrasound beam can be focused. By that
even smaller objects can easily be detected. This is possible also in dirty environment where
optical sensors will fail after short time.
Large detection range up to 1500 mm, without blind range
Small size in popular «R-shape»
Very high switching frequency of 200 Hz
Why ultrasonic sensors from SNT Sensortechnik AG
SNT Sensortechnik AG is a pioneer in the field of ultrasonic sensors.
®
The SONARANGE ultrasonic transducers are developed and produced in-house. They differ from
other brands especially by their high emitted sound power.
®
SONARANGE APPLICATIONS
Process Control
Controlling belt tension or sag
Web guide control
Detecting material feed
Counting / Detection
Counting and detection of parts, vehicles, persons and animals
Detection of objects with «difficult» surfaces
Detection of full or empty containers and pallets
Scanning of Dimensions
Height sensing
Volume measurement
This enables them to detect also small and moving objects.
Advantages
®
SNT sensors have a measurably higher sound power thanks to SONARANGE transducer
design and high transmitter voltage
This makes the sensors more sensitive and thus they detect also moving and small targets
reliably
SNT offers a wide product range
SNT offers customized solutions
One single partner for all tasks in the field of ultrasonic detection

Ultrasonic sensors
11
Why ultrasound
Independent of material, surface, color and size of the detected object
Works under dust, dirt, fog and bright light
Detects reliably transparent and shining targets
Wide measuring ranges from few milimeters up to more than 5 meters
®
Sonic field of SONARANGE ultrasonic sensors: measurably higher sound power!
General
Ultrasonic sensors are mainly used in machine manufacturing and process
control for distance measurement, as proximity switch and for room
supervision.
They work after the principle of time of flight measurement of sound. The
time of flight in air – back and forth – is approx. 6 ms per meter.
The innovative ultrasonic edge sensors however are working based on
analysis of sound intensity.
Ultrasound is very robust compared to other measuring principles. It passes
dirty environment as well. Furthermore it is reflected by almost all surfaces.
Thus it makes independent of material, color and surface structure of the
target to be detected.
Limits of ultrasonic sensors
Relatively slow, switching speed approx. 1...25 Hz
Exception: Ultrasonic through beam > 200 Hz
Resolution approx. 0.5...2 mm, due to wave length of sound
Works only in air
Problems in case of very hot or very cold targets
