AREA TEAMS
BARBE: Veteran defense
from PAGE 5
The biggest concern is up
front, where the offensive line
will have to be totally retooled
with only one starter
returning, senior right tackle
Conner Fry (5-10, 243).
“The offensive line is
young,” Cutrera said. “But
they’re big and they move
fairly well. We’re looking for
good things there eventually.”
The biggest is left guard
Tanner Hooper (6-4, 298), with
the rest of the line expected to
be filled out by left tackle
Jacob Shepherd (6-0, 260), center
Trey Celestine (6-0, 210)
and right guard William
George (5-10, 227).
“The skill people are
proven,” Cutrera said. “ Line
and quarterback, that’s the
questions we had coming in.”
There are fewer questions
on the other side of the ball.
“Defensively, we’ve got a
lot of people back, a lot of
people with experience,”
Cutrera said. “Early on we’ll
rely heavily on them. We’ve
got some people that run pretty
well and can get to the football.”
There are technically only
five returning starters, but
several more saw extensive
playing time last season in
the Bucs’ unique 3-2-6 alignment.
“Again, because of experience,
the defense is what I feel
Returning starters in ALL CAPS.
best about right now,”
Cutrera said. “They know
how to play that defense that
we’re running. It allows them
to just play, to run to the football
and not be thinking
about anything.”
Safety Callen Smith was
the Bucs’ leading tackler as a
sophomore and is back, along
with fellow safety Steven
Benjamin.
There’s plenty of beef up
front, with Justin Woods (5-11,
272) returning at one tackle
with Brandon Williams (5-10,
277) and Mike Duhon (5-10,
240) also in the mix. Bradley
Lamos (6-2, 215) will be the
noseguard.
Spencer Hancock is back
at one linebacker spot with
Dewayne Prudhomme set to
take over at the other.
Austin Guillory and
Keeslon Fontenot will be the
strong safeties, while new
starters Zack Cart and Jalen
Lewis will be the cornerbacks.
Cutrera isn’t sure what
personality his team will take
on.
“It’s too early to tell,” he
said, “But I think we have a
good group. These kids work
hard and I think they care
about each other, which will
help us tremendously.
“We’re just excited and
ready to get started playing
some games.”
Rams in rebuilding mode
BY WARREN ARCENEAUX
AMERICAN PRESS
Five forfeit wins mattered
little for Acadiana in the long
run last season, as the Rams
rampaged through the playoffs,
claiming the Class 5A
state championship with a 21-
14 win over West Monroe.
Graduation did take a toll
on the Rams, who will have
two starters back on offense
and will have an entirely new
lineup in the secondary. The
entire offensive line also graduated,
as did starting quarterback
Ryan Bergeron and
2,000-yard rusher Micah
Eugene.
District
3-5A
The new offensive
line will have
plenty of size with
four projected
starters weighing
at least 255 pounds, including
6-3, 300-pound Travis Venable
at left tackle and 6-7, 320-
pound Miles Davis at right
tackle.
They will be clearing room
for backs Terry Abraham, a
returning starter, and Jeff
Brown, who was in the rotation
last season. The only
other returning starter,
Barrett Guidry, is moving
from guard to tight end.
Rams head coach Ted
Davidson is looking for a
quarterback to lead the veer
attack.
Defensively, the Rams have
five returning starters in the
front seven, led by Claude
George, who led the team in
sacks as an end last season.
Davidson said George may
move to outside linebacker,
where Zach Burch is a returning
starter. Darius Ridgeway
returns as middle linebacker
and Dondre Chanet and Isiah
Abraham return at tackle.
Lafayette will have a new
look with Jay Domengeaux
taking over as head coach and
installing a split-back veer
offense to replace the spread
scheme the Lions used last
year. A pair of returning
starters at running back, Roy
Thompson and Devin
Benjamin,
offense.
will lead the
