RACHEL WHITTAKER
AMERICAN PRESS
The South Cameron
Tarpons began the 2010 season
with 30 players on their
roster.
This year, there are only
21.
After garnering
District
5-1A
just one win last
season because of
a DeQuincy forfeit,
former South
Cameron assistant coach
Edward Cormier has taken
the reins as head coach.
Cormier said he wants to
institute a more pass-oriented
scheme to a Tarpons offense
that struggled to put points
on the board in 2010, averaging
just nine per game.
“In (Class) 1A football,
they don't like to throw the
ball,” Cormier said. “I’m the
only one who likes to pass.
We’ll be balanced, try for 50-
50 pass and run, but maybe
we’ll be 60-40.
“Everybody says defense
wins championships ... but
you have to score to win
championships.”
Quarterback Andrew
Bonsall is back for his sophomore
season after completing
37 of 103 passes for 530 yards,
five touchdowns and eight
interceptions as a freshman.
Three offensive linemen are
also returning starters,
including senior center Chan
LaLande, the nephew of former
South Cameron coach
Parry LaLande.
Guard Jose Castillo and
tackle Corey Miller are also
back. Running backs Jacob
Landry and Adam Broussard
return after combining for
272 yards in spot duty last season.
Landry had a 101-yard
game in week three last season.
Matthew Morgan is slated
to start at fulback.
LaLande retired after the
2009 season, capping off 32
years on the Tarpons’ coaching
staff. South Cameron’s
two state title appearances
came under LaLande’s tutelage
in 1986 and 1996.
Cormier was the defensive
ends coach on the 1996 South
Cameron team, which fell to
Haynesville, 28-6, in the state
championship. The defeat
came on Friday, Dec. 13, the
same date of the Tarpons’
loss to Kentwood in the 1986
title game.
Cormier said a big challenge
in taking the South
Cameron job this time
around is finding a way to
motivate the players to keep
chasing wins. The team hasn’t
been able to practice
against each other this summer
because there simply
aren’t enough players.
“It’s very hard to prepare a
team,” Cormier said. “We
may get it going. The hard
thing is we have to do half a
line of scrimmage because of
our numbers. We can’t work
the whole offense at one time,
just pieces at a time.”
Cormier said that will be
an issue for his defense, a fiveman
front the coaches just
installed.
“[Our linemen] are just
Chan LaLande, left, and Andrew Bonsall are hoping to lead a bounce-back season
under the tutelage of Edward Cormier, a long-time assistant promoted to head coach.
untested,“ Cormier said.
“They look all right against
the dummies we use, but several
of them have never been
in a live situation on defense
with real bodies. It's hard to
learn.”
LaLande and Miller will
lead the defensive line, with
Castillo and Haydon Sturlese
expected to start at linebacker.
The secondary will
feature Landry, Jason
Theriot, Corbet Dupont and
Broussard.
Cormier is no stranger to
bringing programs to life, as
the Welsh and McNeese alumnus
helped start the football
and baseball programs at St.
Edmund’s in Eunice and at
one point coached boys’ and
girls’ basketball and track as
well.
