Bunkie drops down, joins District 5-2A STAFF REPORTS The Bunkie Panthers are in a new location after dropping down from Class 3A and being moved out of an Alexandria-area district, but will hope recent results remain constant. The Panthers have had four straight winning seasons but must replace last year’s starting quarterback Hudson Bain. Leading the offense will be receiver Tonnie Wells. The defense will be led by defensive back Keslow Williams. Ville Platte returns doeverything quarterback Cody Jones, who passed for 1,466 yards and 14 touchdowns and ran for 792 yards and seven touchdowns while leading the Bulldogs to an 8-3 record and playoff berth. Also back is running back Darius Poullard, who ran for 212 yards and caught 19 passes for 392 yards. That is Basile coach Tony District 5-1A Bertrand’s message as the Bearcats enter the season after barely coming up short in their bi-district playoff game last year, a 15-14 loss to Central Catholic. “The running back that went for (the 2-point conversion to win the game) got in by about an inch,” Bertrand said. “That stresses the small things are important. “That was a game we could have won.” Small, however, does not describe Basile’s returning linemen,with second-team all-district right tackle Nick Cortez (6-2, 265) coming back for his senior year. “(Cortez) is a mule,” Bertrand said. “He will really anchor our offensive line and be one of our two-way players. He really moves well.” Three Basile defensive linemen are back who are all at least 200 pounds, including senior defensive tackle Quentin Sonnier, who checks in at 6-3, 290. Junior Kaleb Bergeaux doubles as a defensive end and tight end, and junior Landon Ortego will add offensive guard to his resume this season along with returning as a defensive tackle. “We haven’t had this kind of size on our line in quite some time,” Bertrand said. “I don’t know if we’ll be better, but we’ll definitely be bigger.” Junior Trenton Pelloquin will take over with big shoes to fill at quarterback, after serving as an occasional backup to star Matt Pruitt. “(Pelloquin) can be a good quarterback, but he hasn't been proven yet,” Bertrand said. “He does have good leadership skills, and people respect that in the huddle. But playing on Friday nights is different than practice.” Pelloquin was a wide receiver in the 2010 season, and he will also be a strong safety and kicker along with quarterback this year. Another safety and offensive player for Basile will be first-team all-district senior Dylan Matte, who will attempt to build on his rushing performance of 540 yards on 97 carries last season. Carrying the running game will largely be on his shoulders with the graduation of Jake Fournerat, who racked up 967 yards and 13 touchdowns. Bertrand said he doesn’t anticipate Matte will struggle to take charge again this year, both on and off the field. “(Matte and Pruitt) really emerged as the leaders of our football team last year,” Bertrand said. “They’d call kids up on Saturdays and lead PANKAJ KHADKA/ AMERICAN PRESS some 7-on-7 drills even when the coaches weren’t there. The players respected these two dudes because of their work ethic.” Bertrand’s Bearcats finished in a tie for second place in District 4-1A last season, knotted up with his younger brother Kevin’s Elton Indians. The brothers’ teams face off again this season in week 10, as Basile will try to avenge a 21-19 loss to Elton last year. Basile failed on a 2-point conversion in the fourth quarter that would have tied the game.
