ROSEPINE
New coach Smith
takes over Rosepine
BY WARREN ARCENEAUX
AMERICAN PRESS
District
4-2A
Four straight winning seasons
is a high standard for
Rosepine head coach Danny
Smith to embark on in his
first season.
But that does not intimidate
him as he
takes the helm of
the Eagles. In fact,
his players bring a
feeling of excitement despite
having many positions to fill.
“We have to continue to
build the weight and strength
program, try to be consistent
year in and year out,” Smith
said. “The seniors that graduated
were a great group,
accounted for the most wins
in school history. So far it has
been great. We have good
chemistry on the staff, personalities
that fit. The kids
have responded well.”
Smith won’t be the only
new face, as the Eagles must
replace the entire offensive
backfield, secondary and linebacking
corps.
“The biggest thing is we are
young,” Smith said.
“(Quarterback) Blake Hinson
is a junior, Tim Davis is a junior
and Noah Martin is a sophomore;
they have key spots in
the backfield. We lost our linebackers,
strong safeties and
receivers. We have to replace
our skill people.”
However, there will be
experience along the
Rosepine offensive and defensive
lines.
“We will put a lot on their
shoulders,” Smith said. “In
the past we had skill people.
Now the roles are reversed.
We need our lines to step up
and be forerunners.”
Tackles Chris Brumfield
and Devin Brown, center
Alex Hammond and guard
Derek Wolin are all returning
starters on the offensive line.
Smith said his newcomers
in the backfield have promise.
“Davis has some of that
stuff you can’t coach,” he
said. “He has good feet, can
make the first guy miss. And
he has started at corner so he
has experience on the field.
“Hinson has had a few
reps, but it’s different when
the game is out of reach. I am
pleased that he wants to learn
and is receptive to coaching.
From left, Dalton Jarrell, Chris Brumfield and Daygan
Garnder will look to continue Rosepine’s winning ways.
He is very intelligent, can recognize
fronts and coverages.”
Smith will be looking to
seniors Dalton Jarrell, Coby
Pettypool and Daggan
Gardner to lead a young
defense.
“We have two good tackles
in Dalton and Coby and will
move Gardner to linebacker,”
Smith said. “Gardner runs
well, is not afraid of contact
and has been very coachable
in learning a new position.”
Davis will lead a rebuilt
secondary. He will be joined
by Colton Johnson, Stanley
Hogan, Darrius Griggs and
Dylan Strickland.
Smith said he likes the athleticism
of his defensive
backs, but he said they need
more experience as a unit.
Smith, who has been a
defensive coordinator for the
past three seasons, is excited
about returning as a head
coach.
“This is a new opportunity,
a new challenge,” he said. “I
am excited to take over a program
that has tradition established.”
Smith has been stressing
the intangibles to his young
team.
“We ask the kids to do what
they are capable of,” Smith
