PICKERING
Veteran Pickering looks for improvement
RACHEL WHITTAKER
AMERICAN PRESS
In coach Lane Cook’s first
year at Pickering in 2010, the
Red Devils finished an even 5-
5, not enough to make the
Class 2A playoffs.
This season though, quarterback
Zack Roberts will be
back for his senior year, one
of seven returning starters
District
4-2A
on the Pickering
offense. Also, Cook
said he is very glad
to have leading
rusher Andre Flint back in
hopes of propelling Pickering
into the postseason.
“Having Zack back is one
of our big keys,” Cook said.
“We don’t have as much size
at receiver as we did last year,
but Andre Flint and the guys
we do have are really athletic
and bring a lot of speed.”
Roberts threw for 1,061
yards and 12 touchdowns last
season. The receiving corps
includes senior Kenny Woods
and sophomore Daveon
Banks.
The Red Devils offensive
line will have three veteran
faces in left tackle Jordan
Hindsman, left guard Charles
Sanders and center Joe
Cummings.
Cook said he is grateful for
the leadership coming back
on offense.
“I'm looking for the returning
guys on our offensive line
to step up and create some
continuity there and help
teach and lead the younger
guys,” Cook said.
The Pickering offense averaged
23 points per game in
2010, only ahead of Vinton
and East Beauregard in
District 4-2A.
Cook said more is possible
this season, but the Red
Devils can’t afford to focus on
scoring a certain number of
points in each game.
Pickering’s split-back multiple
offensive set will be up
against three new teams
added to its district — Kinder,
Lake Arthur and Welsh.
“I don't want to say we'll
average X amount of points,”
Cook said. “We just need to
make sure we score more
points than they do, whether
it's 14 points per game and we
still win or 20-something.
We’d like to think the offense
will be our strong suit
because of the number of
returning starters we have.”
Defensively, the Red Devils
are not so lucky. Only two
players in the lineup were
starters last season — linebacker
Zach Wardlow and
Clockwise from top left, Charles Sanders, head coach
Lane Cook, Andrew Marsalise, Andre Flint and Zack
Roberts will look to lead Pickering back to the playoffs.
free safety Andrew Marsalise.
The defensive spots are
open for competition, Cook
said.
“Right now it’s anybody’s
game so to speak,” Cook said.
“For the nine positions, we
have about 15 guys we’re looking
at who have the opportunity
to fill those slots. It will
come down to whoever works
the best and hardest and
shows us they’re going to produce
the most.”
The men in the running to
start on defense include two
BRAD PUCKETT / AMERICAN PRESS
freshmen — defensive end
Brad Conn and cornerback
Chris Mitchell — and three
sophomores — defensive tackle
Greg Green, linebacker
Tyler Winger and cornerback
Detric Bessard.
Cook said the main thing
he can hope for is that the
youngest players will mature
fast.
“When you’re young,
you’re young,” Cook said.
“You live and die by what
you’ve got. Ultimately we
hope the seniors we have on
