Trojans look for turnaround with Price

It’s out with the old and in
with the new for the East
Beauregard football team this
season.
Coach Randy Price was
hired in May to replace Robert
Jackson, whose three seasons
with the Trojans totaled two
wins and 28 losses.

District
4-2A
School defensive
coordinator said he
is embracing his
job of turning
around a team that finished in
the cellar of District 4-2A in
team offense and defense in
2010.
“The players were looking
for change,” Price said. “Coach
Jackson did the best he could
do at the time, but they wanted
to have someone new come in,
whether it was Randy Price or
Bear Bryant. It just so happened
that Randy Price
stepped in.”
Price is installing a wing-T
offense for the Trojans and a 4-
2-5 defensive scheme, both
changes from last season’s I-
formation/spread offense and
5-3 defense. He said he is more
confident in his ability to succeed
as a head coach because
the importance of defense is
clear to him since his previous
head coaching stint 21 years
ago with the Bolton Bears in
Alexandria.
Price will have his work cut
out for him. In nine losses last
season, East Beauregard’s
average margin of defeat was
30.7 points.
“I was more offensive-minded
the first time,” Price said.
“I’d rely frequently on a defensive
coordinator and put all the
eggs in his basket ... If we're
going to turn the corner with
this program, we have to play
good defense. It's not going to
be about how good we are
offensively.”
Of the Trojans’ five returning
defensive starters, three
are senior running backs who
Price said will play on both
sides of the ball — linebacker
Seth Shirley and defensive
backs Aaron Armstrong and
Dillon Messer.
Shirley was the district’s
No. 2 rusher last season, gaining
1,079 yards with 11 touchdowns.
Price said Shirley
stands to be the fullback in the
Trojans offensive set.
“He’ll have a chance to run
the ball on both sides of the
center,” Price said. “The other
two backs are going to run
strictly to the side away from
where they line up.”

The quarterback position
makes Price a bit apprehensive
in his first season as coach.
The oldest quarterback on East
Beauregard’s roster is sophomore
Josh Fletcher (5-8, 125).
“It worries me because he’s

so young,” Price said. “He
won't be a drop back in the
pocket, pro-style quarterback.
We'll rely basically on playaction
passes when we throw
the football.”

manage the game.
“We’re not looking for him to
win the game for us,” Price
said. “If he can go out and manage
the offense, not try to do too
much, he can be a good quarterback
for us.”
