DEQUINCY
Flanagan takes
over at DeQuincy
District
4-2A
After a second short-lived
retirement, Carl Flanagan is
back, inheriting a DeQuincy
program that had a rough offseason.
“I missed it, then this
opportunity came along that
was a good program with tradition
and is a good location
from where I live,” Flanagan
said. “We have a really good
staff; several of the assistants
have been here a few years.
The whole staff is from
DeQuincy, and they know a
lot about the town.”
Flanagan was impressed
during an abbreviated spring.
“What stood out was the
great work habits among the
kids,” Flanagan said. “You
can look at film and analyze
talent, but you don’t know
what day-to-day habits they
have. They don’t mind working.
That’s a good
place to start. I was
impressed with the
talent level. We’ve
got 63 players, which is not
bad for a 2A school.”
Flanagan, who has favored
a power running game in the
past, said he will not overhaul
DeQuincy’s double slot
attack. Leading the way will
be Jaleel Bridges, who threw
for 1,898 yards and 24 touchdowns
last season.
Flanagan said he is happy
to have Bridges back.
“Jaleel is a tall kid and has
an excellent arm,” Flanagan
said. “For a kid his age, he
was asked to function in an
offense with a lot of reading
and decisions.
“The kids have had success
with that offense.”
Tyler Burgess will lead the
receiving corps and may see
some time under center.
Kaleb Hollie will play receiver
while Brandon Brown will
DeQuincy head coach Carl Flanagan will count on Jaleel
Bridges, Patrick Dietz, Evan Stanley and Tyler Burgess.
have a utility role.
“Brown is the type of guy
that can play slot, running
back or receiver,” Flanagan
said. “Chris Russell will be
another receiver along with
several young guys. At running
back and receiver we
will use several guys. Brown
will run the ball some.
Patrick Dietz, the fullback
last year, is back. Chas Smith
and Evan Stanley will be in
our two-back sets. Ashton
Spikes is a quick scatback
that can run the ball.”
The Tigers don’t have
much size on the line.
“That’s why they’ve done
MEREDITH BLINDER / AMERICAN PRESS
the type of stuff they’ve done
offensively,” Flanagan said.
“As the young guys get experience,
they will get better.”
Flanagan has switched the
defense to the 4-3 package he
is familiar with and
DeQuincy also has used.
“I have run it at different
schools and been successful,”
he said. “The depth on our
defensive line is a strength.
We can roll two or three
groups in there.
“We have experience in the
secondary. Brown has played
corner and safety, and
Burgess can play both too.
Hollie started at corner last
