LEESVILLE
New Leesville coach
expects big things
BY WARREN ARCENEAUX
AMERICAN PRESS
Yet another new coach is
taking over at Leesville.
Jimmie Adams is taking
the reins as the fourth head
coach at the school in the past
District
3-4A
six years, and he is
planning on ending
that trend of
constant turnover.
“I am here for
ten years,” said Adams, who
comes from a stint as defensive
coordinator at
Natchitoches Central. “This
is a fantastic place to be.”
Adams’ first big task is to
get all his players in their best
positions. He is doing some
last-minute shuffling after a
disappointing performance in
a scrimmage against Captain
Shreve.
“We did not have a good
scrimmage, but we will be
fine,” Adams said. “The
defense has concerns. We
have to play with young kids
and have to get them to play
faster. We will change how we
do stuff and read things so
they can get after it better.”
Only two starters return
on defense.
“We lost a lot of good ones
defensively, but we will be
solid once we get everything
down,” Adams said. “It just
takes some changes and hard
work.”
The defensive line will feature
Elbert Marbury, Mason
DeLapp, Raqkeem Cheeley
and Dalton Harville.
“They play aggressively
and move to the football and
try to make plays,” Adams
said. “We will put guys out
there who sprint to the football.”
Jeremiah Cross, who
played on the line last year,
moves to middle linebacker
this season.
“He is the leader of the
team,” Adams said. “He runs
a 4.6 at 215 pounds and will
knock the mess out of you.
We just need him to read
things faster.”
Strong safety Marshall
Smith is the other returning
starter.
“He is a college prospect, a
top notch kid with good
speed,” Adams said. “Marcus
Watkins is going to free safety
from corner. He is a good
over-the-top type player.
From top left, Zack Squyres, coach Jimmie Adams,
Jeremiah Cross, Marshall Smith and Adam Woods, are
ready to build a new tradition at Leesville.
Devontez Winters will be at
one corner; he is a press coverage
type that is also a
strong kid and a good guy in
support. We are looking at
two or three other kids at the
other corner.”
The offense will have a
new look, with the veer
replacing the wide-open
spread of the past few years.
“We will open things up
some, but our base will be the
veer,” Adams said. “We have
got some backs that can hit
the hole hard, some quick-hitting
types.”
Adams said quarterback
