Returning starters in ALL CAPS.
SB: Defense is the key
from PAGE 34
knows what I like. He gets it
north and south, runs with a
good pad level and has good
vision. When he gets rolling,
everyone feels better, and the
momentum starts flowing. Joe
Ledet is going to play at running
back too. Dusty Lambert
is a strong kid, a hard-nosed
fullback that is going to block
and do what we need.”
Whalley will head a newlook
secondary.
“We lost our top three
safeties from last year, and we
wanted to add some depth
there,” said Demeritt of moving
Whalley. “We have good
athletes, though. Ledet has
speed and has a chance to be a
good player. Hunter Fontenot
is a returning starter at corner.
This is the best team speed we
have had. Our slowest kid in
the secondary is a 4.7.”
Also making a move is
Adam Graves, who is switching
to defensive end after
starting at offensive guard
last season.
“Graves has unbelievable
quickness and a good motor,
so we thought he could help
us on defense opposite Bryce
(Hebert),” Demeritt said.
“Bryce has started three
years on offense and two on
defense. He is a physical runblocker
and good defensive
end. He is dominant on both
sides of the ball, and we will
rely on him for leadership.”
Hebert is expected to be
cleared to play in early
September after tearing two
knee ligaments last year.
Demeritt, who coached
offense as an assistant, said
his defense will be the key to
South Beauregard’s success.
“I am an offensive guy, but
I believe in winning with
defense,” he said. “We gave up
9.7 points per game last year,
second in Class 2A.
(Defensive coordinator) John
Storer does a phenomenal
job.”
Offensively, the Golden
Knights will continue to
stress balance.
“We have thrown it more
each year, and this year will
be no exception,” Demeritt
said. “I like our quarterback,
Zach Brady. He has a lively
arm. In this district, you can’t
just run the ball. You need
more balance. He and Pryce
(Fontenot) have a good connection.”
Demeritt said the offensive
line has both size and experience,
starting with T.J.
Wilcox, a two-year starter
who has converted from
guard to tackle.
“(Wilcox) will be the
leader,” Demeritt said. “Allen
Mallette is enormous and is
starting to get aggressive. We
have good size at center in
Cody Cormier. At guard, we
have good speed with Wayne
Hennigan and Austin LeBleu,
