A whopping 11 new head coaches will man the sidelines this year, with longtime stalwarts Jimmy Shaver, Mike Maggio and Johnny Cryer enjoying retirement. Among the new coaches are seven first-time head coaches, and a sprinkling of veterans such as Carl Flanagan, Danny Smith and Neal Lege, who is back for a second stint leading the program at Iota. Those new coaches will be hoping the follow the lead of Elton’s Kevin Bertrand, who in his debut season led Elton to an 8-win season, a return to the playoffs and earned family bragging rights by knocking off Basile, coached by his older brother Tony. Reclassification brought changes to most of the local districts, which now include Class 3A powerhouse Notre Dame, a couple of old friends in Carencro and Comeaux and Opelousas-area duo Beau Chene and Opelousas. Jennings and LaGrange each moved down a class while South Beauregard and Sam Houston each moved up, creating new districts and rivalries. The reclassification has created a set of balanced districts in the area. In the preseason polls for Districts 3- 5A, 4-4A, 4-2A and 5-1A, three different schools received a first place vote. The 4-2A poll has the top three teams — Lake Arthur, Kinder and Welsh — seperated by a single point. District 4- 4A has St. Louis and Washington- Marion tied at the top, with LaGrange two points back and DeRidder in fourth place another two points back, despite receiving a vote for first place. No district received as big a makeover as District 4-3A, with Jennings moving down, South Beauregard moving up and Notre Dame moving over, against its wishes, to be paired with crosstown rival Crowley. The district’s defending champion, Westlake, was picked to finish fourth in the preseason poll despite the return of star running back Devin Eaglin, starting quarterback Ryan Feagin and iconic coach Max Caldarera. The movement and apparent parity is a good thing for fans, as there will be high-stakes and exciting matchups throughout the district season. Many of the area’s traditional rivalry matchups will continue despite all the shuffling. Games like Barbe-LaGrange, DeQuincy-South Beauregard and Leesville-DeRidder Warren Arceneaux High Schools will not have district title implications, but will remain big ones in the eyes of fans. The good thing about all the movement is it has created plenty of drama along to the confusion over who is going to be playing whom. None of the area districts has a clear-cut favorite, meaning there will be plenty of high-stakes games during the second half of the season. On the field, a host of stars must be replaced, including Oberlin star Cedric Skinner, who set the all-time state rushing record with an astronomical 3,437 yards and scored 47 touchdowns while leading Oberlin to an undefeated regular season and a trip to the semifinals. Hamilton quarterback Cameron Meyer became the first area player to both run and throw for 1,000 yards in a season. Other departures include Barbe’s prolific passer Jared Foster, St. Louis running back Dillon Berlin, LaGrange’s backfield trio of Courtney Brown, Aaron Sam and Darius Edwards, Rosepine’s own big three of Klint White, Gary Suydam and Kameron Suire as well as Jennings’ trio of speedsters Bryson Abraham, Davondrick Phillips and Michael Wilridge. Also gone are Westlake safety Tyler Stoddard and a trio of do-everything stars in Iowa’s Gene Pete, Leesville’s Levander Liggins and Washington-Marion’s Geroski Harmon. Despite those departures, plenty of star power will be on display. Barbe receiver Trey Quinn wasted no time in making a name for himself last season. Eaglin, a first-time starter, powered the Rams to a District 4-3A title, and DeQuincy quarterback Jaleel Bridges lit up scoreboards all season as a sophomore. More unexpected performances such as the ones that trio produced last season are on the way. Although we aren’t sure just yet who will emerge as stars this year, at least we now know their performances aren’t far away. The fun and drama begins next week.
THURSDAY, AUGUST 25, 2011 FOOTBALL 2011 AMERICAN PRESS 3 PLAYERS TO WATCH No shortage of star power in Southwest Louisiana BY WARREN ARCENEAUX AMERICAN PRESS KAREN WINK / AMERICAN PRESS Westlake’s Devin Eaglin is back for more after rushing for 1,403 yards and 17 touchdowns last season while leading the Rams to the District 4-3A championship. Barbe WR Trey Quinn and TE Desean Smith — The Bucs bring back a pair of big, agile targets who can make plays all over the field. Quinn caught 65 passes for 1,288 yards and nine touchdowns as a freshman, while Smith added 44 catches for 579 yards and 10 touchdowns as a junior. Sulphur LB Holden Rogers — The Tors linebacker struggled with injuries last season, but he possesses a lethal mix of speed and size when he’s healthy. He will attempt to bounce back to the level of his sophomore season, when he earned first-team all-district honors. LaGrange SS Tirell Wellmaker — After earning a starting spot as a sophomore and earning all-district honors, Wellmaker will be LaGrange’s most experienced defender and assume a leadership role. Leesville QB Zach Squyres — The Wampus Cat hurler is the top returning passer in the area after throwing for 2,733 yards and 30 touchdowns last season. St. Louis PK/P Harrison Flynt — The legacy of outstanding Saints kickers continues with Flynt, who set the school record for field goals made last season. Flynt will also assume punting duties this season, replacing all-state performer Kris Albarado, who signed with USC. Washington-Marion OL Sanchez Pitre — The Charging Indian lineman has both the size to overpower opponents at the line of scrimmage and the agility to pull and be an effective downfield blocker. Westlake RB Devin Eaglin — The Rams running back powered the team to a district championship, finishing the season with 1,403 yards and 17 touchdowns. Eaglin will need another big season if the Rams are to repeat as champions with Notre Dame, Jennings and South Beauregard entering the district this season. South Beauregard SS/RB Silas Whalley — Since joining the team as a sophomore after being a home-schooled student, Whalley has helped the Golden Knights set school records for wins in each of the past two years, including an undefeated regular season last year. This year the dual threat will take a bigger offensive role as the primary ball carrier. Defensively, Whalley will move from linebacker to strong safety to boost an inexperienced Golden Knight secondary.
