Returning starters in ALL CAPS. GATORS: Expect to throw more this season from PAGE 5 spread formations.” Quarterback Joseph Spruel will be running the show. The senior threw for 562 yards and seven touchdowns last season while most of the offense was run through backs Aaron Sam, Courtney Brown and Darius Edwards. “He is comfortable with the new offense and did well during our 7-on-7 season,” Sullen said. “It was a good situation for him to come into last year, where he was surrounded by great athletes. It was his first year in varsity, and he did a good job. He’s not the biggest kid, but he can throw the ball and is a leader of the team.” Spruel will have no shortage of targets this year. Nick Pitre and Myrtell Hawthorne, a pair of 6-foot-3 receivers, headline a receiving corps that will also include 6-foot-1 Fred Williams, Hamilton transfer Ja’Len James and senior Devin Griffin, who will see time at receiver and running back. Pitre will also see some time at quarterback. The running back corps will feature a rotation of Griffin, Robert Ledet, Tyler Guillory, Robert Ryan and Azie Avery. “We are going to take a committee approach,” Sullen said. “We will be spreading the field more, but we still are going to run. Ledey is big and physical; we are expecting a lot from him. Azie played a lot for us last year.” Up front, center Elijah Williams and guard DyQuan Simon are returning starters. “We have been working on footwork with the linemen all summer,” Sullen said. “Last year was about power. This year they will be doing more protection.” New faces abound on defense, where strong safety Tirell Wellmaker is the lone returning starter. “Wellmaker really came on last year and became a good player,” Sullen said. “Our linebackers, Antione Hagans and Jaylin Thomas, also got some playing time which helped their understanding.” On the line, the Gators will be young but athletic with McKenzie Lewis, Tracey Ryan, Mylon Miles and Olajuwan Eaglin moving into the starting lineup. Sullen said one of the offensive linemen’s assets is their quickness. “They are extremely physical and can fly to the ball,” Sullen said. Joining Wellmaker in the secondary will be cornerbacks Jacory Augustine and Shaquille Adams and safeties Jamarcus Anderson and Haywood DeJean. “Shaquille gives us good height at the corner and has deceptive speed,” Sullen said. “Shaquille is a physical corner, an in-your-face type.” Sullen said the drop down to Class 4A could benefit the Gators. “It is brutal in 5A — we were losing the numbers game, and the second halves were tough on us,” he said. “This district is going to be tough. Coach (Mike) Johns is doing a great job at St. Louis; they won the district last year and DeRidder was second. Beau Chene and Opelousas are coming in and they are going to be tough. Our goal is to make the playoffs. Once you get in, anything can happen. The Dragons went 6-5 last year and are looking for more. Returning your quarterback, top running back and a massive offensive lineman should mean good things for the upcoming season. At DeRidder it means solid building blocks, which will give the Dragons a District chance at making 4-4A another playoff run. However, there are questions to be answered and holes to be filled. “We have some kids who have seen some time on Friday nights, but not in the positions they are going to be in,” said head coach Eric Parmley, who enters his sixth season at the Dragons’ helm. Last year his club finished 6-5, losing to Leesville in the first round of the playoffs. Repeating that run will be a challenge. DeRidder does return eight starters from a year ago, but that means the coaching staff will be finding out a lot about its team in the early going. “You are never sure what you have until they start hitting,” Parmley said. “We like what we see, but we don’t really find out until the games. “We will be counting on a lot of new kids, including some sophomores, to step up.
