THURSDAY, AUGUST 25, 2011 FOOTBALL 2011 AMERICAN PRESS 17 GAMES TO WATCH GAMES TO WATCH Week 1, Sept. 2 LaGrange at Barbe No district championship will be up for grabs this season in this matchup since LaGrange is back down to Class 4A. Nonetheless, the debut of Mike Cutrera as head coach of Barbe should be worth watching against a LaGrange team with a deep receiving corps and 10 new starters on defense. ■ Week 2, Sept. 9 Hamilton Christian at Kinder The Warriors have a new coach in Sam Pratt and a new quarterback in Marco Richard, who starred at receiver last season. They’ll get a stiff test on the road against a hungry Kinder team that felt the District 4-2A title slip away last season in a two-point loss to Lake Arthur. The Yellow Jackets feature a pair of talented runners in DeVaughn Thompson and Marshall Harmon. ■ Week 3, Sept. 16 Jennings at St. Louis Jennings, now a Class 3A team, faces former district rival St. Louis in hopes of avenging a 10-point loss to the Saints last season. Both teams lost crucial production at running back that will make the offenses look different this time around. ■ Week 4, Sept. 23 Lake Arthur at Rosepine It’s a matchup of the 2010 district winner and co-runner-up. Lake Arthur has won two straight district 4-2A titles, and Rosepine has racked up four straight winning seasons. Rosepine will be looking to avenge a 2009 home playoff loss to the Tigers. ■ Week 5, Sept. 30 Acadiana at Sulphur The reigning Class 5A state champions pay a visit to Sulphur, a team stacked in experience offensively with seven returning starters. The Tors will be looking to avenge a blowout loss at home last season that Acadiana was forced to forfeit for using an ineligible player. ■ Week 6, Oct. 7 Washington-Marion at St.Louis The Charging Indians welcome in three transfer players, linebacker Melvin Jones from Barbe, running back Osha Jackson from Sam Houston and right guard Greg Lewis from Carencro to shore up its 2-8 team from last season. Coach Freddie Harrison faces off against his mentor, St. Louis’ Mike Johns. Harrison served as offensive coordinator at St. Louis from 2006-07. ■ Week 7, Oct. 14 Jennings at Westlake Jennings defensive linemen will be licking their chops to stop Westlake quarterback Ryan Feagin and running back Devin Eaglin. The Rams have three new starters on their offensive line who need to be ready for that challenge. ■ Week 8, Oct. 21 Oberlin at Elton A rematch of a 2010 regional round playoff game pits Oberlin, the reigning District 5-1A champion, on the road against the team it eliminated from the playoffs with a last-minute two-point win. The Tigers have won two straight district titles. This game could determine if that streak continues. The Indians are led by offensive lineman Patrick Jacobs, a McNeese commitment, and running back Micah Lavan, who gained more than 1,100 yards last season. Linebacker Lance Frank and safety Desmond Antoine return to lead the Oberlin defense. ■ Week 9, Oct. 28 Jennings at South Beauregard The two teams that were part of the District 4-3A shuffle face off in week nine. It’s one of four precious home games for the Golden Knights, who had their first undefeated season in school history in 2010 and have rattled off 19 wins in 20 home games through the past four years. South Beauregard head coach Shawn Demeritt played at Jennings and began his coaching career there under Bulldogs head coach Rusty Phelps. ■ Week 10, Nov. 4 Basile at Elton It’s round two of the Bertrand Bowl with brothers Tony (Basile) and Kevin facing off to close the regular season. The teams tied for second place in District 5-1A last season in younger brother Kevin’s first year at Elton, and his Indians got the best of the Bearcats in a nail-biter that came down to the wire. Returning starters listed in ALL CAPS from PAGE 15 for the newcomers to learn from. “Jacob could coach every offensive line position himself, and Tanner is a successful three-sport athlete whose leadership is so valuable,” Eggleston said. Defensively, linebacker Evan Campbell and cornerback Eric Peterson — both juniors — are the only players with starting experience. The Broncos gave up 29 points per game in District 5-4A play in 2010. In District 3-5A, Sam Houston’s new district, only Sulphur allowed more points with 33 per game last season. Eggleston said it will be key for Campbell to fill Chesson’s spot at linebacker well. He added that he has a lot to prepare for in his new role as head coach. “[Campbell’s] leadership is very key; that’s what [Chesson] did so well besides everything else,” Eggleston said. “I need to look further ahead and see the overall picture.
