2. What are the project identity and its main messages (15 lines)<br />

Summarize who you are/ what you do/ what are your objectives/ your values and<br />

specificities. Describe the main characteristics of the logo and graphics charter you<br />

intend to use.<br />

<strong>The</strong><strong>The</strong>matic Network “HerO - Heritage as Opportunity” consists of the 10 partner<br />

cities Graz (Austria), Naples (Italy), Vilnius (Lithuania), Sighisoara (Romania), Liverpool<br />

(United Kingdom), <strong>Lublin</strong> (Poland), Poitiers (France), Valencia (Spain), Valletta<br />

(Malta) and Regensburg (Germany) with the latter being the Lead Partner of<br />

the project.<br />

HerO aims to develop integrated and innovative management strategies and urban<br />

development policies to facilitate the right balance between the preservation of the<br />

built cultural heritage and the sustainable, future-proof socio-economic development<br />

of historic urban landscapes and to strengthen the attractiveness and competitiveness<br />

of the old town area. <strong>The</strong>reby emphasis will be put on managing conflicting<br />

usage interests and capitalising the potential of cultural heritage assets for<br />

economic, social and cultural activities (Heritage as Opportunity).<br />

Thus, the project’s exchange and learning activities mainly focus on the development<br />

and implementation of “Integrated Cultural Heritage Management Plans” in<br />

all HerO partner cities. Further topics, which have been conjointly identified by the<br />

partners as being the most relevant in terms of a sustainable development of historic<br />

urban landscapes and which will therefore be subject to further exchange and<br />

leaning activities within the network, are the “Visual Integrity of historic urban<br />

landscapes’” and “Balanced urban functions in historic urban landscapes”.<br />

<strong>The</strong> HerO project corporate design has been created in dependence on the <strong>URBACT</strong><br />

logo in order to link to the “<strong>URBACT</strong> European <strong>Programme</strong> for Urban Sustainable<br />

Development”.Both, the project name “Heritage as Opportunity” and the logo aim<br />

to positively encourage cities to regard their cultural heritage assets as an element<br />

of identity and to capitalise on the potential of this heritage for economic, social<br />

and cultural activities.<br />

<strong>The</strong> person in charge of fulfilling and updating the HerO project website on the<br />

<strong>URBACT</strong> site will be the HerO Communication Officer Ms. Barbara Buehler at the<br />

Lead Partner City of Regensburg.<br />
