the pair. Prerequisites are for the
plays to be provocative, salty and
of course, effervescent in their
humor. If the play speaks, Zittrer
and Roveda look into the logistics
of putting it together, finding the
right actors to play the parts and
making sure it coalesces with the
other selected plays for the night.
The fact that they are short plays
means that lots more actors can be
involved in the show and that gives
the actors, directors and audience an
opportunity to engage with different
tempos of comedy whilst the rapidity
a succession of short plays affords,
allows our flea-bitten attention spans
instant satisfaction. It’s all a bit of a
balancing act.
Tons of supporT
In spite of a severe lack of funding,
the Taipei Players’ shows have
drawn tons of support. Shows have
taken place in packed bars, airless
clubs and cramped sound studios,
but always with a heaving audience
in attendance. Audience support
has been phenomenal. The Players
hope for a proper venue which will
allow for larger audience capacity
and (of course) funding which will
allow them to invest in said venue,
a proper rehearsal space and maybe
allow them to buy props. With
good humor and a nostalgic chuckle,
Roveda recalls having to borrow
stools from a local temple. The
audience was a little nervous about
sitting on them as they had melted
due to a gregarious bursting of
temple fireworks near their vicinity.
Bottoms were spared and in proof
of their loyalty, ticket sales for their
very next show, An Evening of Shorts
3, are already on the rise. The show
is happening on the 10th and 11th
of April at 2:30 and 7:30 pm at the
Guling Street Theater. The highlyacclaimed
director, Brook Hall,
who brought Taipei the incredibly
successful Broadway
m u s i c a l S m o k e y
Joe’s Café, will be
directing some of
the plays in The
P l a y e r s ’ l a t e s t
offering. Another
exciting addition
is that up-andcoming
sound
artist Leo37 will
be providing hip-grinding
sounds between plays.
Prashantha Lachanna has been living
and working in Taiwan for five years
and is currently running her own
events company.
