What’s Up and Coming in the Club

March is fast approaching and
so is Mike Jackofsky’s all day
demo. We will be only charging
$10 (we had to raise the price
of lunch to cover the increasing
cost of food) for lunch and
you get to enjoy an entire day
of first class instruction on how
to get the best cut on your bowl
or hollow form using both a
bowl gouge and carbide cutting
tools. Mike has taught around
the country (for a price) and we
get all his knowledge handed to
us because he is one of our own
members. I want to thank Mike
for donating his time and showing
us how to use our tools. It’s
both a learning lesson to new
turners and refresher for those a
little more seasoned.
Mike has offered to conduct a
one, two or three day class and
we will be taking names at the
meeting.
April
For our April Demo we will
welcome Joe Fleming as our
demonstrator. He brings a wealth
of knowledge of many things but
this demo will focus on using
color and airbrushing to enhance
our turnings. He uses color
in many of his pieces and the
preparation and finish are just
outstanding. I have seen some of
his airbrushing techniques and
he is able to get some beautiful
colors or pictures that remind
of Bin Pho. I hope we see you
there.
May
May will be our annual Picnic.
This is a time we all get together
to celebrate spring and enjoy
each other’s company. Bring
the family to Ken Roth’s house
and let the kids run wild! (Hey
it’s not my house.) Seriously, he
has a beautiful and very large
yard with its own stream running
through it. The kids will love to
chase the crawdads and hopefully
not get too wet. We also hold
our biggest and best raffle of the
year. Everyone is encouraged to
turn a favorite object and donate
it to the raffle. This raffle has
been my favorite since I pick up
great artwork for my collection.
I still have a few more peoples
turnings that I need to add to my
collection. So come on down
and bring the family. There is a
charge for lunch but I’m not sure
of the amount so I won’t guess.
June
June is set to be another new
thing to learn. We have Oskar
Kirsten conducting a demo on
how to core out your salad bowl
blanks and get 3 or 4 bowls
from one chunk instead of one
bowl and all those shavings.
Why waste a beautiful piece
of wood when there are more
bowls to make and sell. Oskar is
one of our Mentors and I went
over to his shop and learned how
to use his Oneway Coring System
and he has some great tips
and techniques to get the best
results. There are other systems
out there and so far this was by
far the easiest to use and learn.
Of course being the tool-aholic
