YOUR LETTERS
How the mountain lost its mojo
To my children’s children’s
children.
Once upon a time there was
a sad mountain named
Maungatautari.
The reason Maungatautari
was said was because he had
been invaded by evil pests, and
they had eaten up nearly all of
his lovely bird, insect and
animal friends, who loved on
his his bush clad slopes.
On day a clever elf had the
Time to look after our pennies
There is an old saying ‘look after the
pennies and the pounds will look after
themselves’. Of course now it’s dollars
and cents.
You can go down town with money in
your pocket, $50 or whatever thinking to
yourself that’s plenty for what I need
today, but where does it go?
Spend a little here, a little there and
before you know it the only thing in your
pocket is your hand. Money is so easy to
wonderful idea of putting up a
special pest proof fence
around maungatautari, and
the getting rid of all the nasty
possums, rats, mice, stoats and
feral cats from bushy slopes.
All the lovely native birds,
insects and animals would
then be able to return to
Maungatautari and live there
safely.
Very soon the elf and lots of
his friends built a marvellous
fence, and got rid of all the evil
pests.
The birds, insects and
animals returned and thrived.
People came from far and
wide to see the marvellous
fence and the beautiful birds,
insects and animals in the
peaceful Maungatautari refuge.
The elves looked after the
fence and watched out for any
pests who tried to sneak
spend, debt is so easy to accumulate and it
is real nice to have or want things — a big
velodrome, a new swimming complex, a
new museum with an entertainment
centre as well.
Just spend a few million and increase
public debt and they are all yours.
Waipa has around 45,000 people, (one
third of the population of Hamilton) who
are lucky to live in one of the most
beautiful, natural places on this planet.
Who helps the struggling ratepayers?
In his letter Rob Waddell
makes a weak attempt to
explain why every ratepayer
has to pay for the velodrome.
It would be safe bet that
less than 10%, but nearer 5%
of the region’s ratepayers
only will use it.
The regional council has
no right to grant a small
group of people $6 Million.
Instead, it should be a loan
on which interest is paid. Mr
Waddell and his mates
should underwrite the loan.
There has been so many
figures quoted, how can we
be sure the Home of Cycling
Trust won’t come back to the
ratepayers for more funds.
The trust claims they
have $13.7 Million but
remember Waipa’s $1 Million
has four caveats on it, so
really they can only have
$12.7 Million.
If by some chance they get
$6 Million from the regional
council, that would be $18.7
Million. Where is the last $10
Million to make up the $28.5
Million.
The regional councillors
who voted to spend $61,500 to
consult the public and
another $50,000 for an independent
consultant’s report,
plus $38,000 on Deloitte’s due
diligence report are pouring
$149,500 down the drain.
The councillors who voted
for this foolish move should
be voted out at the next
election — they are as pigheaded
as the cycling project
proponents.
When a project is reliant
on 100% finance in grants
and donations, it is always
doomed to fail.
MALCOLM HUME
through it.
Unfortunately, one day the
elves began to squabble
amongst themselves. While
they were arguing and squabbling,
the sneaky possums,
rats, mice, stoats and feral
cats. who were locked outside
Maungatautari, found little
chinks in the fence and they
started to climb and dig and
chew their way through it ...
MARY-ANN LAIDLAW
Clean air, green fields, native bush,
rivers, lakes, mountains, walkways and
cycleways.
These things make us such a unique
and desirable place to visit or live.
All we have to do is appreciate what we
have, control spending, keep rate
increases to an acceptable level and
people will want to come and be part of
Waipa ‘the home of the lucky’.
VERN WILSON
Can claim be
substantiated?
A Letter to the Editor from
M.E. Wilson appeared in the Courier
recently.
M.E. Wilson claimed that the
Southland velodrome in Invercargill
was a great success.
Can these statements be
substantiated, financially or
otherwise. Or are they statements
gathered from previous press
releases.
It is very important to get
correct information.
Workmates join forces for good cause
WORKMATES (from left): Raewyn Morrow, Debbie Bird, Carol Hooker, Carmen Rush (above) nervously
get ready for their hair to be shaved and (below) compare the results afterwards.
BY CATHY ASPLIN
The middle of winter is probably
not the best time to shave
your hair off - but that’s exactly
what four local women have done.
Pop ‘n’ Good employees Debbie
Bird, Raewyn Morrow, Carol
Hooker and Carmen Rush decided
to have their heads shaved to
raise funds for the breast cancer
foundation.
‘‘We have in some way all been
affected by Breast Cancer through
friends and family and want to
contribute towards raising funds
for the cause.
After setting their target at
$3000 the women left pink buckets
at various locations around town,
staged sausage sizzles and gained
personal sponsorship.
In front of gathered friends,
family and workmates they
completed their end of the bargain
by having their heads shaved at
the Davies Foods’ Pop ‘n’ Good
Factory on July 1.
Debbie Bird says it was
initially a bit of a shock to have
the razor through her hair, but
having it all removed has resulted
in a few bonuses.
‘‘I’m actually enjoying having
no hair and I won’t have to colour
it again.’’
Raewyn Morrow says they
have all received nice feedback.
‘‘People do a double take to
start with when they see no hair,
but they are impressed when they
know why, especially those who
have lost someone to breast cancer.’’
Carol Hooker says people have
told them how brave they are.
‘‘Many of them have said ‘I
couldn’t so that’. Others says we
have shown courage and that
we’re awesome.’’
The four workmates thank
Davies Foods Operations Manager
Martin Kwan and other staff
members for ongoing support.
They are also extremely grateful
to everyone who has helped
them successfully reach their target.
‘‘We have raised just over
$3000 which was our initial aim,
so we’re really pleased about
that.’’
Further donations are always
welcome in person at the factory
or via the website (www.nzbcffundraising.org.nz).
When asked if they would do it
again, they were all quite adamant.
‘‘It’s a once in a lifetime thing
really - we can tick it off our list
now - been there done that.’’
Young Farmer winner grew up here
Will Grayling, winner of
The National Bank Young
Farmer Contest, may have
been representing Aorangi
Region but he grew up in this
area.
Will (25) is the son of Jim
and Mary Grayling of O’Regan
Road, Ngahinapouri.
‘‘He lives in the South
very much a local boy. He
attended Ngahinapouri Primary
School and St Paul’s Collegiate,’’
says mum, Mary.
She and her husband were
at Masterton to see their son
triumph in the contest and
Mrs Grayling says they could
not be more proud of him.
He took out The Ultimate
Rural Challenge after three
days of intense competition,
collecting a prize package with
a value of $85,000.
It all started on Thursday
with the Technical Day at
by the Practical Day at the
Solway A and P Showgrounds
and Saturday night’s Televised
Grand Final Evening
Show on July 2.
Along with the excitement
of winning, Will said he was
feeling very relieved after
such a gruelling week.
“It’s been a pretty challenging
week, there were some
tough times but I stuck in
there. A lot of hard work has
gone into this and it’s great to
get this result.”
Will’s fiancé Kimberley
True summed up the contest
as ‘the true test of a man’ and
congratulated all seven
contestants for their hard
work throughout the week.
Nearly 800 people attended
the Televised Grand Final
Voters who haven’t received update pack need to re-enroll
About 50,000 New Zealanders
need to get back on the
electoral roll because their
enrolment update pack has
bounced back marked ‘gone no
address’.
The Electoral Enrolment
Centre mailed enrolment
update packs to everyone on the
electoral roll at the end of May,
to let them know that the
election is on its way, and to ask
them to check their enrolment
details.
‘‘If you are one of the 50,000
or so voters whose pack has
returned to us because you’ve
moved house and not updated
your enrolment details, you
have been removed from the
electoral roll,’’ says Murray
Wicks, National Manager, Electoral
Enrolment Centre.
Wellington Central has had
the most voters removed from
the roll, while Taranaki-King
Country has had the least.
Voters can freetext their
name and address to 3676, get a
form from a PostShop, call
online to www.elections.org.nz.
Harold and Masterchef
to create kitchen magic
It might be a stretch to
imagine Life Education Trust’s
mascot, Harold the Giraffe, whipping
up delicious gourmet fare
with TV’s 2011 Masterchef winner
Nadia Lim — but that’s
what’s on the menu in Te Awamutu
College Hall on August 20.
‘Harold’s Winter Feast’ is a
fundraiser for Waipa King
Country Life Education Trust,
which provides a mobile classroom
to over 60 schools throughout
the Waipa King Country area.
Educator Nicky Wise and
mascot Harold teach kids how to
‘walk tall’, understand how their
bodies work and how to value and
take care of themselves.
Tickets for the event include a
three course meal of entrée, main
and dessert.
Chef, Nadia Lim will demonstrate
the choice of two starters
and desserts during the evening
(under Harold’s watchful eye).
There’ll also be a ‘silent’
auction and a live auction of
prizes on the night. Prizes gathered
so far include a Lake Tarawera
fishing trip and lunch for 10
lucky people with Sir Henry van
der Heyden; coaching and a
round of golf with Gina Scott;
beach house weekends at
Whangamata and Mount
Maunganui; cookware from
Stevens; and a range of exciting
gift vouchers from other supporting
businesses.
Organisers at Waipa King
Country Life Education Trust are
looking forward to ‘Harold’s Winter
Feast’ providing an entertaining
evening full of fun.
As always, the trust is keen to
acknowledge its supporters who
help raise the over $100,000
needed to keep the mobile classroom
on the road each year.
Johnston fights way
to NZ karate crown
BY COLIN THORSEN
Kathryn Johnston is the toast
of Kihikihi Kyokushin Karate
Club after winning the New Zealand
novice women’s middleweight
kumite (fighting) title.
The yellow belt was without
peer in her division at the
national full contact Kyokushin
Karate Championships in Palmerston
North.
The referee stopped both her
semi-final bout, against Amy
Watson (Palmerston North), and
final, against Ellyce Wichman
(Porirua), after the first of three
scheduled rounds — awarding
each fight to Johnston by unanimous
points decisions.
Johnston says the martial art
is a great way to get fit and learn
self defence.
She collected a second medal,
claiming silver in the kata (set
patterns).
Clare Fraser also did her Kihikihi
club proud, claiming a silver
medal in the lightweight kumite
final. The blue belt lost a close
contest, on points, against Palmerston
North’s Kate Nicholas.
Fraser also performed well in
the adult kata, without featuring
in the medals.
Kihikihi’s small team of six
clubs, its members continue to
represent the community well.
Training is at Kihikihi Primary
School hall on Tuesdays and
Thursdays. The junior class runs
from 6pm to 7pm, followed by the
Grylls quite at home in Cup win
Satherley dedicates her victory to grandmother
TC120711CT08
MUD splattered Te Awamutu Cup winning jockey
Craig Grylls returns to scale.
BY PHILLIP QUAY
Former and current Te Awamutu
jockeys enjoyed plenty of the limelight at
Saturday’s Freight Lines Te Awamutu Cup
meeting.
Former Te Awamutu jockey Craig
Grylls won the feature event, the $17,500
Freight Lines Te Awamutu Cup (1580m,)
aboard Murray and Bjorn Baker-trained
Hurricane Mickey who started favourite.
Grylls, nowadays based at Matamata,
had not previously won the Cup — so he
was delighted to add the race to his record
of major victories.
‘‘I still regard Te Awamutu as my home
track, so it was great to win the Cup.
‘‘He (Hurricane Mickey) loves the wet
tracks and he was right in his element
today.
‘‘He was travelling well throughout the
race and had them covered in the final 200
metres.’’
Hurricane Mickey has won 10 races
from only 31 starts and most of his success
has come on heavy tracks.
HURRICANE MICKEY (Craig Grylls) gets home by three quarters of a length
from Ourforeignminister (Mark Sweeney) in the Te Awamutu Cup.
dedicated her win aboard D’Llaro in the
Rosetown Holden 2000 to her grandmother,
Angela Thomas, who died early
last week.
‘‘It’s been a tough week and this is a
very emotional win for me,’’ said
Satherley.
‘‘She was my biggest fan and kept
scrapbooks with stories from the paper on
my wins and about a lot of things in racing.
‘‘My daughter is named after her
(Sophie Angela).’’
Satherley was pleased with the outcome
of Saturday’s race after she selected
D’Llaro ahead of a number of other horses
engaged in the race.
‘‘I had a choice of six rides in this race
and fortunately I picked the right one.’’
It was Satherley’s first win since
breaking her hand in a fall at the Rotorua
meeting on April 15.
‘‘It’s great to get a win on the board
again,’’ she said.
D’Llaro, who is trained at Cambridge by
Graeme Lord, excelled on the heavy track
conditions.
‘‘He has really clicked now what the
racing game is all about and I expected him
to be hard to beat today,’’ said Lord.
‘‘Lynsey has done quite a lot of riding
for me and I am delighted to see her get this
win, especially with what she has been
through this week.’’
D’Llaro scored by half-a-length from
Tom’s Myth, one of the mounts that
Satherley was also offered.
Satherley’s manager, Simon Holmes,
was pleased to see Satherley back in the
winners’ circle.
‘‘She does a lot of hard work and
deserves all the success she gets,’’ said
Holmes.
The other Te Awamutu-based jockey to
enjoy success at the meeting was Mark
Sweeney who has been in outstanding
riding form in recent months.
Sweeney was successful aboard the
Rogerson-trained mare, La Bella Signora,
who is headed for the broodmare paddock
this spring.
Sweeney also finished runner-up in the
Te Awamutu Cup aboard
Ourforeignminister, trained by Richard
and Chris Otto.
Classic win for Darvill trained I’m Isaac
BY PHILLIP QUAY
I’m Isaac’s ninth career win
in the John F Grylls Memorial
Classic at Te Awamutu on Saturday
had more meaning than
any of his previous victories for
Tauranga trainer Peter Darvill.
It was the first time Darvill
had not only celebrated a win as
the eight-year-old’s part-owner,
but also this time was recognised
as his trainer.
Previously, I’m Isaac was
prepared for his race victories
by Tauranga trainers Bruce
McKeagg and Jim Pender.
‘‘Today I’m his trainer,
breeder, part-owner and
strapper and it’s a great feeling,’’
says Darvill, who races
the Istidaad gelding in partnership
with his wife, Nola.
‘‘I thought he could turn his
form around because he has
been working well and was
very fit.
‘‘I was a bit worried though,
that the track might have been
too heavy for him.’’
Darvill says I’m Isaac has
been a special horse for them,
having won a few Cup races
including the Te Aroha Cup
and Wairoa Cup.
‘‘The race means a lot to us,
too, because it is named after
Johnny Grylls who rode this
horse’s grand-mother, Pheroz
Faith.’’
I’m Isaac will head next to
the $80,000 Taumarunui Gold
Cup (2100m) at Te Rapa on July
30.
‘‘He had to go a good race
today to clinch a start in the
Taumarunui Cup and he’s done
that.’’
Darvill’s riding instructions
to apprentice, Maija Vance,
were followed to a tee.
‘‘I told Maija to stay away
from the rails and that’s exactly
what she did,’’ says
Darvill.Vance, who rode her
50th winner mid-week at Te
Rapa, has been enjoying
improved fortunes since she
moved from Ardmore to Cambridge
‘‘I plan to make Cambridge
my permanent home now,’’ she
says.
‘‘I have been getting more
rides and my weight is under
control. I can now ride at 53kg
whereas before I was struggling
to get below 56kg.’’
WELCOME back Marty Holah ... the Waikato flanker takes the attack to Taranaki, supported by team-mates, from left, Toby
Lynn, Malcolm Barnes, Alex Bradley, Chris Middleton and Nathan White.
Under-20 World Cup winning team member
Beauden Barrett at first five.
In doing so, Waikato regained the Ryan
Wheeler Memorial Trophy, exclusively at
stake whenever these two proud rugby
unions meet.
Waikato coach, Chris Gibbes says he and
his assistants (Scott McLeod and Greg
Smith) are ‘incredibly proud’ to be able to
bring the trophy back to where it belongs.
‘‘We are very pleased with the effort put
in by the team at Te Awamutu.’’
Taranaki captain Craig Clarke handed
the trophy over to his Chiefs’ team-mate,
Waikato captain Nathan White at the aftermatch
function in Te Awamutu Sports Club.
John Wheeler, Ryan’s father, was in attendance.
Gibbes says he could hardly believe his
eyes at the size of the crowd.
‘‘To arrive at those grounds and see all of
‘‘It was fantastic to be able to take an ITM
begins — in the local clubs.’’
Gibbes says a huge thank you must go to
Keith Parsons and the team at Te Awamutu
‘‘Your support is much appreciated by
everyone at Waikato Rugby.’’
Waikato building nicely for ITM Cup
WAIKATO wing Frank Halai makes a break against Taranaki, with Tim Mikkelson in support.
From page 14.
After the success of
last Wednesday’s match
and last Monday’s
school visits, Gibbes
says the Waikato Rugby
Union will certainly be
looking to take more of
their events out to the
local clubs within the
region.
The coaching staff
were understandably
stoked with the effort of
the Waikato team.
‘‘To go from a tough
loss to Auckland on Saturday
night to a very
physical, hard-fought
win against Taranaki
four days later shows
that we have what it
takes to handle the short
turn around this season,
and the ability to field a
competitive team week
228855AA
in, week out,’’ says
Gibbes.
Stand outs for Waikato
were former All
Black openside flanker
Marty Holah, in his first
game since May for the
Ospreys in Wales,
destructive No. 8 Alex
Bradley who scored a
brace of tries, New Zealand
Sevens stars Declan
O’Donnell and Frank
Halai in the threequarters,
and the second
half replacement pairing
of halfback Tawera
Kerr-Barlow and
Stephen Donald.
Skipper White
anchored a Waikato
scrum that often had
Taranaki’s pack backpedalling,
while his Te
Awamutu Sports clubmate
Chris Middleton
Waikato Toyota
WOF Specials
impressed locking the
scrum, in the first half,
with former Te Awamutu
Gwynne Shield
rep Toby Lynn. Both
these locks worked
tirelessly at set piece
and in general play.
Gibbes made changes
to the pack at halftime
without losing any
momentum.
The coach warns that
Taranaki will be
tougher when the two
teams meet in round
two, having spent little
time working on their
scrum to date. Following
the game here, Waikato
had another big week of
training in preparation
for their round one ITM
Cup game against Southland
in Invercargill on
