Smith Rock – Oregon
Randi and I were on a two and a half month trip in our RV. We did a little bit of everything including a 2½ week
trip to Inuvik in the Northwest Territories of Canada on our dual-sport motorcycles. On the way back to Arizona,
we stayed in Sisters, Oregon for a few days and took one day to climb at Smith Rock that is located north of Bend,
Oregon near a small town of Terrebonne.
~Tom & Randi Folwell
Smith Rock State Park encompasses 651 acres on the
Oregon high desert plateau, which hovers around 3000
feet in elevation.
The park and campground are open year-round. A $5
day use permit or a current state park camp receipt is
needed for each vehicle. A yearly permit is available
for $30. Day use permits are available from the self
service pay stations.
Dogs are permitted on a leash.
Hiking trails offer spectacular views of the surrounding
area. You can spend 30 minutes walking along the river
or a full day making a loop on trail systems that extend
outside of the park to Deschutes Land Trust, USFS and
BLM land.
The major rock faces are composed of welded tuff
(compressed volcanic ash) reaching a height of up to
550 feet. The picnic and campground areas sit on top
of the rimrock, which is made up of columnar basalt.
There are over 1800 climbing routes in and around the
park ranging from some of the best sport climbs in the
world to... “Why would anyone want to climb that pile
of choss.”
Outdoor enthusiasts climb, hike, mountain bike, trail
run and horseback ride year-round, but summer temperatures
can reach 100+ degrees (f), and in the dead of
winter the thermometer stays close to the freezing mark
(32f) during the day. Spring and fall are the best months
for outdoor activities.
Wi-Fi Hotspot from BendBroadband is available for
park visitors.
The three pictures on the left are one of me setting up an anchor and the other two pictures are of Randi and me
climbing. We climbed in an area where it was easy to top rope and it was called “Rope De Dope Block.” The
river you see in the foreground is the Crooked River. Across the Crooked River, the other three pictures are of
the “Morning Glory Wall Area.” You can see climbers on the wall and during the time we were there the two
climbers made it to the top. The climbing book “Weekend Rock of Oregon” is a good basic book that covers the
area for most of the popular climbs.
AMC Basic Outdoor Rock Climbing Class
Fall 2012
Did I remember to say “THIS IS THE BEST GROUP EVER!” October was a busy month topped
off by a great Basic Outdoor Rock Climbing School. The turnout was just right with thirty students
completing the fall session, all in fine fashion. Many of the students had previous experience in the
gym and were chomping at the bit to get out on real rock; others had no previous climbing experience.
Regardless, every single student took right to the rock with a great mixture of grit and determination
and “let’s have some fun” attitude.
And all the instructors were terrific! This class simply cannot happen without so many members coming
back to share their knowledge, skills, and time. And a big thank you goes out to the outing leaders
- Rogil Schroeter, Jeff Nagel, Dave McClintic, Frank Vers, John Gray, Curtis Stone, and Chris Meyer
- who took us out to the crags to test our new-found skills. And finally, let’s give a big shout-out to Ron
and Ruth for sharing their home for another great grad party.
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed instructing this class over the years and this class really stands out. Did I
remember to say “THIS IS THE BEST CLASS EVER”
Queen Creek Clean-up & Climb
Fall 2012
We did it again! And oh how the highway shines!
The AMC maintains a stretch of US Highway 60 at the Oak Flat turnoff just West of Devils Canyon and the
Adopt-a-Highway sign helps symbolize the Club’s presence at one of the richest climbing areas in Arizona. A
couple of times each year we gather at the turnoff and pick up roadside trash tossed from passing cars along the
highway. Cleanup & Climb outings are open to everyone and we had twenty-three members help with the highway
cleanup and picked up twenty bags of trash.
The climbing leaders arrived early and set up a generous assortment of climbs in a variety of grades at the Pancake
House in Upper Devils Canyon. If you’ve climbed there then you know that the Pancake House is nicely spread
out and offers dozens of high-quality sport routes. Many of the lines were put up by Marty Karabin and his skill
and style are evident throughout the area.
The weather was perfect and the friction the rock afforded was excellent. It was another of those days when you
just want to stay out on the walls.
After a full day of climbing, most of the group headed to Superior for Mexican food and beer at Los Hermanos.
Much of the conversation aimed towards the Thanksgiving outing in Joshua Tree. If you’ve never been there, it’s
a must climb destination. Thanksgiving at J-Tree is an AMC tradition that’s been going on for many years and is
really a blast! Good food, great company and some of the best climbing on the planet.
The grand prize winner who found $25.00 by the highway was Mark Christiani. Also, many thanks to all who
participated, with special kudos to outing leader David McClintic and the set up crew.
The next Cleanup and Climb will likely be in the last weekend of March, 2013, and if we don’t see you at J-Tree,
we would love to see you there!
