The History of the
Ennis Lawn Tennis &Badminton Club
The Ennis Lawn Tennis and Badminton Club was established in 1982. It was the culmination of talks that led to the
amalgamation between the run down Tennis Club and the thriving Badminton Club.
The cost for the work needed to develop the entire site was estimated at £98,000, an enormous sum at the time.
The developments included:
Buying the stone from the mill next door which was about to be knocked down. This stone was used to
elevate the site which flooded every winter, and create a new car park.
Building a new clubhouse with 2 badminton courts, dressing rooms, showers, toilets and a gallery
overlooking the courts.
Constructing 2 new hard tennis courts with new fencing and floodlights.
Building perimeter fencing with a gate for security.
This work was completed in Nov. 1983, and another hard court was installed in 1984. The club flourished in both
tennis and badminton. In junior badminton it produced many internationals with Donie O’Halloran going on to
become a Senior International. There were and are still many social events, competitions and tournaments.
In the early 90’s the landscaping was completed and floodlights were installed on court 3.
In Jan. 1994 there was severe flooding in Ennis. All 3 tennis courts were submerged and water lapped up to the
clubhouse door. A storm also damaged the west wall of the hall
It was decided to build two state of the art artificial grass courts (4 & 5), with floodlights and drainage, twenty
eight inches above the existing car park, at a cost of £66,000 Euro. These were completed in 1995.
In 1997 the original courts 1, 2 & 3 were elevated to the same level as the new ncourts 4 & 5, with a green acrylic
surface, and by 2002 these were also covered with artificial grass. The entire cost of developing the 5 courts was
250,000 Euro. There have been many improvements since and the club has currently 400 members.

Major events
Oliver Moylan and the Chamber of Commerce raise approx £1,000 for the Tennis Club. This provided funds to
repair the nets and fencing, cut the grass regularly on the P & P course, and provide a caravan to be used as a
changing room.
The 2 hard tennis courts along with the 9 hole course were renovated. Subs £6 Adult membership, £10 Family and
£3 Junior.
Oliver Moylan hands over the keys of the caravan to the President Rev Sean Moriarty. The cost of repairing the old
Pavilion would have been £2,000.
Trustees of the Tennis Club met with the Chamber of Commerce and Rotary members , on how to revitalize the
Club. A special committee was set up to build a new clubhouse and sports complex (including squash), but only
one badminton court. A possible link to the Ennis Badminton Club was proposed. Meetings were held with Tom
Eade, Gerry Bredin and Mick Molloy of the Ennis Badminton Club.
In September Rev Sean Moriarty told the Badminton Club that the Tennis Club does not wish to amalgamate.
However in October the Tennis Club asks the Badminton Club to join them on an equal basis.
Rev Sean Moriarty bites the bullet and goes for the merger. He was concerned that the Badminton would take
over and that the tennis would disappear. He need not have worried. In 1982 he was transferred to Co. Offaly
after being in Clarecastle fo 18 years. He became an Honorary Life member of the Club in 1982 and used to
regularly visit the Club. In 1995 he blessed the new omnicourts. He returned again in 2000 for the Fergus LTC
reunion. He passed away in 2005. He was the Mens Singles Tennis Champion in 1948, 1956, 1965, 1973 and
1975. The Club will be eternally grateful to this amazing man.
A £9,000 grant was approved by Clare County Council. Planning Permission approved for new clubhouse
Tennis Club Championships and tournaments back again. The last Pitch and Putt competition is held.

AGM Oct 1981
Turnover for 81/82 £8657 26p
A joint committee was set up to organize an EGM in April 1982, to seal the amalgamation and write a new
Constitution. This was headed by Tom Eade and Gerry Bredin. They were asked to design the new clubhouse
with 2 badminton courts, dressing rooms and showers, and a viewing gallery, 3 new tennis courts, floodlights,
security fencing and a gate (to curb vandalism), and an elevated car park (that would not flood every Winter) .
Planning permission, grants, bank loans, new Trustees , tennis and badminton committees, a Management
Committee, all had to be organized.
The costing came in at £98,000 (approx 500,000 Euro) The clubhouse, tennis courts, and grounds, funding etc
were completed by Nov 1983. An amazing achievement.
While the clubhouse was being built the badminton players continued to play at Our Lady’s with the tennis
players at the Mill Road.
Ennis Lawn Tennis and Badminton Club holds its first AGM in October 1982. A new Constitution is passed, and a
new Committees and Trustees are elected.

Ennis lawn Tennis and Badminton win their first Munster Tennis League Title. Team: Johnny Flynn, Adrian McNeill,
Jackie Malone, Edel O’Halloran, Michael White, Geraldine Fogarty. They beat Newcastlewest 4-3 in a playoff for
the title. (The Fergus LTC our predecessor won the last Munster Trophy the Richard Cup in 1961).

Ennis also enter The Galway League, Connacht Cup and Munster Spring League.

Ennis won most of the Clare Junior Championships at U/12, U/15 and U/18.

Gerry Bredin wins the December Sports Star of the Month Award, due to the tremendous success achieved by the
juniors at the club
The inaugural Eileen Dunne Mixed Badminton tournamaent is held in Ennis. The winners were Claire Kelly and
Martin Barry
5 teams with over 50 members competing in the Clare Leagues
Clare are runners up in the Brewster Cup. The team was managed by Frank McInerney and the Ennis players were
A McNeill, L O’Halloran, Mike Healy, Geraldine Meaney and Edel O’Halloran.
Clare won the National Class 3 team championships. Ennis players on the team were A McNeill, and J Malone.
Ennis win the Div 1 Clare title. They defeated Ardnacrusha in the final. The team was Liam O’Halloran, Mick Healy,
Adrian McNeill, Gerry Bredin, Pat Kelly, Edel O’Halloran, Geraldine Meaney and Jackie Malone.
In the Div 1 Championships, J Malone took the Ladies Singles. In Div 2 Dqrren MCNeill took the mens singles, and
won the mixed with Claire Kelly.

In the Clare Div 1 Championships: A McNeill took all 3 titles, the Mens Singles, the Doubles with L O’Halloran, and
the Mixed with Edel O’Halloran. No Ennis player had ever done that before.

Ennis are Munster champions in the Community Games. The team was Sinead Murphy, R browne, Sharon Moylan,
Catherine O’Shea, Emmet Bradley, Peter Molloy, Gary Duggan, Rowan Eade. They go on to win the Bronze medal in
the national finals.
Ennis provide 10 of the 11 players on the Brewster Cup team. These are J Flynn, M Moroney, S Nugent, K McNeill,
M Werakoon, J McInerney, R Browne, C Kelly, A O’Connell and A M Lucas.

The Ennis Div 6 Badminton team are Clare League winners and beaten by Killarney in the Munster Final. The
Team: Mary Callinan, Ken King, Peter Kavanagh, Tomas DeBuitleir, Ger Browne, Karen O’Dea, Derval Lowry, Pauline
Clancy, Paula Tobin and G O’Dea.
Rowan Eade is selected for the Irish U/16 team. Ireland come second to England. Because of Rowan’s excellent
performance he is the only Irish player to be invited to the prestigious Wimbledon Open World Under 15
Championship. He is also selected for Ireland in an 8 country tournament to be played in Wales.
He also wins the Cork Examiner Munster Youth Award
Catherine O’Shea, Liam O’Halloran and Rowan Eade are on the Clare Brewster Cup team, which came third, and
also on the Clare Class 3 team that lost narrowly to Meath, in the Irish Semi Final.
The Club hosts a very successful invitation mixed doubles, sponsored by Howleys. 50 players took part. The
winners were Eoin Collins and Ann McMahon who defeated Charlie Mahon & Carmel Banville in the final

Major Events
AGM Frid July 9th 1993. Only The Tennis and Badminton Captains elected at the AGM. No Management
Committee is elected. In Sept the Badminton Committee becomes the Management Committee, and Tom Eade
agrees to return as Chairman. Peter Kavanagh becomes Club Treasurer.
In Nov 1993 part of the balcony overlooking the hall is enclosed with glass and insulated ceiling to form the Club
room. This provided a warm room in the Winter for the first time. (Cost £6,000) The loan was paid for by the
Badminton committee over 3 years.
In April 1994 a storm damages the west wall of the hall. The hall is closed for 2 months so that buttresses can be
built. A new storeroom is enclosed in the buttresses and the dump behind the club is removed and replaced with
concrete. This cost £3,500.
Ducting and poles are installed to enable the installation of floodlights on Court 3. (cost £1,000)
July 1994 new kerbing around perimeter and the planting of hundreds of hedges. (cost £700)
The flower bed and rockery is moved from in front of Court 2 to an area inside the front gate on the left.
Income: £16,085. A 4 month Draw was held from Dec 93 to March 94. There was £600 in cash prizes every month.
The entry fee was £5 per month.

On April 23 rd 1994, Munster play Ireland in a senior badminton exhibition match at the club featuring all the best
Senior International players. The Munster team featured club member and Irish International Donie O’Halloran,
with Joyce Walsh, Sian Williams and Pat Marron. The Irish team which won the match was Maeve Moynihan, Nikki
Lane, Willie Lacey, David Hogan and Michael O’Meara.
A McNeill, K McNeill, D Browne, R Eade, S Cunningham are on the Clare Butterfield Cup team managed by Tom
Eade.

Ennis win the Clare Div 4 Team League. The team was Peter Kavanagh, Pat Cassidy, Liz O Modhrain, P Mullane,

In Aug 94 the clubhouse drains are connected to the town sewage, as the existing septic tank lies beneath the
proposed Omnicourts. (cost £2,000). Ducting for floodlights on the new courts £1,500.
Sept 94 Floodlights for Court 3 £4,500. A new window is installed overlooking courts 4 & 5 .
Feb 1995 Worst flooding in Ennis for decades. All tennis courts flooded with 2 feet of water. Flooding stops at
clubhouse door. The planned height of the new courts is raised another 28 inches.

3 Trustees retire Johnny Flynn, Brian McMahon and Niall McMahon. Kevin Vaughan has passed away. These are
replaced by Gerry Bredin, Ger Browne, Pat Cassidy and Isobel O’Dea. The other Trustees are David Williams (who
took over from his father JW Williams), Oliver Moylan, Joe Molony, F McInerney, T Mannion and Tom Eade
A very successful Club Lotto is set up and organized by Gerry Sadlier. It ran weekly from Aug 94 to March 95. It
made nearly £8,000 in profit. Over 13,000 numbers were sold.
Table Quizes, Golf Classics (profit £2,740), Race Nights (Profit £2,000) etc are run by the Club to raise funds
£27,000 raised by club members in 6 months . The rest is borrowed from the AIB.
Negotiations are held with the bank to reduce interest rate on existing loan. The repayments are reduced to such
an extent that even with the new borrowing (£23,000) the repayments are less than before and there is also an
income of over £4,000 in court fees from the new courts.
The new 4 & 5 Omnicourts are opened in May 1995
A huge Open Tennis and Badminton tournament is held to celebrate the opening of the new courts.
94/95 Income £38,280 . St Francis Credit Union make a contribution for the new courts.

Ennis win the Div 2 team title. They defeated Scariff in the final, and went all the way to the Munster final where
they were beaten 4-3 by the eventual Irish Champions.

The Div 2 team lose to Scariff in the final. Paula Tobin loses the last game in the last match in the final, otherwise
she would have won Div 6, 5, 4, 3 and 2 in consecutive years.
Clare Badminton has 18 affiliated clubs with 400 adults and 200 juniors registered.
The Club hosts a Yonex Badminton Mixed Doubles tournament in Dec 95.
The Clare Class Class 3 team reach the Irish Semi Finals in Galway. The team was Tom Bourke, Dave Browne, Al
Bredin, Kieran McNeill, Rowan Eade, Tom Foley, Sally Cunningham, Vivienne McLaughlin, Deirdre Butler, Catherine
O’Shea, Maura Seymour and Mary Ryan.

April 1997 Courts 1 2 & 3 are elevated two and a half feet to the same level as Courts 4 & 5. They are painted green
with an acrylic paint. Cost £75,000. A very expensive drainage is installed below the courts, in order for the
planning permission to be obtained.
Instead of having a block of 3 courts together it was decided to build a pathway between 1 & 2, with a patio.
Income £27,148 . A Golf Classic is held again.

A Supporters Club is set up where people lend £1,000 to the club for 5 years. In return they receive £100 of court
fee vouchers each year.
Noreen Smythe ( former member of the Fergus LTC) donates a 1996 Atlanta Olympics T Shirt autographed by the
best tennis players in the world to the Club. These included Arancha Sanchez, Andre Agassi, Pam Shriver, Conchita
Martinez, Mary Pierce, Monica Seles and Billy Jean King.
A new junior committee is formed to take care of activities and competitions tennis and badminton, for the
juniors.
The club makes an offer to the UDC to buy the adjacent yard, to allow the building of a full size hall. The offer is
rejected and an apartment block is built.
The Club obtains a bar and dance licence in May 97. This is organized by the Club Secretary Feargal O’Dulaing

The Ennis Div 2 team wins the Clare and Munster champions and Irish finalists. It was the best achievement ever

Irish U/15: Darryl wins 3 titles. He defeated Amir in the singles final. They combined to win the doubles (unbeaten
for 5 years), and took the mixed with Emer Harte from Cork. Ruth Kilkenny was defeated in the singles final.Darryl,
Amir and Ruth are selected for the Irish U/15 team. The International event was held in Cardiff. Darryl and Amir
won the International Doubles at the three day event.

Rachel Comerford wins the Irish Close title at Rushbrooke. The first Ennis junior player to win an Irish Close Title
since Brendan Killoran won in Rushbrooke in 1966.

The annual Open Doubles Tournament was cancelled in May due to lack of entries.

Amir Intisar wins the singles and doubles with Derek Flanagan.

AGM March 29 th 2000. Supporters club has now 13 members
In March 2000 a Development Plan was launched to raise £50,000 over 3 years to place 3 artificial grass courts
over the green acrylic surfaces on Courts 1, 2 and 3. The money was raised from the annual Golf Classic and Race
Nite, The Xmas Draw, Sponsorship, Grants from the National Lottery, table quizzes etc. ( All 3 were installed by
May 2002 with no money borrowed.)
April 2000 22 members of Landsdowne LTC visit the Club. After a full day of tennis a buffet dinner is helad at the
club followed by music.
In May 2000 an EGM was held regarding the allowing of juniors play in the Senior Club Championship. The
proposal was defeated.
In July 2000 Jerry Cahir and Ghislaine De Regge organized the biggest social event the club has ever seen. Over 120
people from all over the world attended the reunion of former members of the Fergus Lawn Tennis Club. It took
over a year to organize. It incorporated a golf tournament, an historic tour of the town and a dinner at the Old
Ground which was oversubscribed and had excellent speakers. A booklet was produced for the event with
invaluable photos and highlights. It culminated on the Sunday with mass followed by a B-B-Q and tennis
tournament at the club.
Tom Eade is made an Honorary Life Member of the Club.
32 teams enter the very successful Golf Classic, which was followed by a disco at the Golf Club. It raised over
£2,500.
April 2001 a Race Nite is held in the club for the first time. The hall was packed and good fun was had by all. It
made over £3,000 for the development fund.
A new bar with shutters is installed at the club. 2000/01 Income £35,938.

The American tournaments are again a huge success throughout the Summer with up to 58 people taking part per
night. £500 profit was made towards the development fund.
Over 72 entered the Spring League. The annual tennis Camp is held

June 2003 The Special Olympics comes to Ireland . Ennis hosts the Russian Delegation for 5 days. Each day there
was training for each individual sport, followed by a special event ( Bunratty, Seaworld Lahinch etc.). On the last
night there was a farewell party and concert at Ballyea that hundreds attended.
The Club hosted the 8 Russian badminton players (4 boys & 4 girls), and 3 coaches. They came from Kostroma,
Yaroslav and Moscow, and mainly came from orphanages. They were very good badminton players and were well
prepared for the tournament the following week in Baldoyle, where they featured prominently in the medals.

Junior South of Ireland: Emma Tierney was r-up in the U/16 singles, and won the u/18 doubles. Sarah Hoey won
the u/16 B singles. Diandra O’Connell & Ciara Pender won the u/14 doubles, and Ciara won the B singles.
In the Munster Summer Cup Div 6 Mixed, Ennis defeat St Michaels from Cork.
Ennis enters 5 teams in the Munster Winter League. These are Mens Div 3, Ladies Div 3, Mixed 4, and two Div 6

Colaiste Mhuire U/16 tennis team won the Munster final: The team is Emma Tierney, Rachel Comerford, Michelle
Barry and Sarah Hoey. This was their their second consecutive Munster title. They who won the u/14 title in 2002.

Feb 04 Irish Senior Badminton Championships: Donie O’Halloran wins the Irish Mixed title with Huang Bing. Ruth
Kilkenny wins the doubles title with Keelin Fox.
Irish Junior Championships U/15: Ciara Pender defeated Joanne Flanagan in the Irish singles final. They won the
doubles title together.
Dublin Open: U/15 Ciara Pender wins the singles. Ciara and Joanne Flanagan were R/up in the doubles.
Ciara also wins the Connacht U/15 title.
Colaiste Mhuire U/16 team win the Munster title and are through to the Irish Schools Finals, where they come
second.The team was Ciara Pender, Joanne Flanagan, Ruth Lillis, Michelle Barry and Catherine Harnett.(they won
the Irish U/14 title last year)
Leinster Spring Open: Ciara Pender wins the U/14 singles. In the U/16 singles she defeated Joanne Flanagan and
they teamed up to win the doubles.
Munster Championships: U/19 Joanne Flanagan was R/up in the singles and doubles. U/15 Ciara Pender defeated
Joanne Flanagan in the final. Ciara and Ruth Lillis won the doubles. U/13 Robert Pender and Stephen Moloney won
the doubles. Robert and Kate Tierney won the mixed.

Emma Tierney (age 15) wins the South of Ireland A singles and is selected on the Munster U/18 team and the
Munster Senior panel. Travis McDonagh wins the South of Ireland A singles (for the 5 th year) and doubles, and is
selected on the Munster Senior Tennis team.
Travis is on the Munster team that won the Inter Provincial title for a historic 7 th year in a row. Travis was on the
previous 5 teams and never lost a singles. This was Emma’s 3 rd time on the Senior team panel, but she did not play.
Ennis Junior Open : Rachel Comerford & Sarah Hoey win the Girls U/14 Doubles title. Rachel was also R-up in the
singles. Sarah was R-up in the mixed.

Ennis hosted the Munster Intercounty Tennis Championship. Cork won the tournament with Clare coming third.
The team was Aidan Foley, Ronan Flanagan, Willie O’Doherty, Mimi Conroy, Margaret Flanagan and Helen Gallery.

Ciara Pender wins the Irish U/15 singles title for the second time. She was r-up in the doubles. Ciara was selected
for the Irish U/15 team that played in Baldoyle. Ireland finished third.

Emma Tierney won the West of Ireland Open Singles in Sligo. She is beaten in the Galway Open Senior Div 1 singles
final.
Colaiste Mhuire U/19 tennis team are through to the Munster final: The team is Emma Tierney, Rachel Comerford,
Michelle Barry and Sarah Hoey. This will be their fourth consecutive Munster final appearance. They won the u/14
title in 2002, and the U/16 title in 2003 and 2004.
South of Ireland: Travis McDonagh is R-Up in the South of Ireland A singles, doubles and mixed. His first loss in
seven years. Emma is defeated in the Div 1 doubles final. She won the junior mixed event. David Clohessy and
Caroline Moloney win their respective singles titles. Caroline also won the Div 6 doubles.

Ennis has two teams in the Munster Summer Cup, a Ladies Div 4 and a mixed Div 6.
Over 150 take part in the Kit Kat Parks Tennis Camp.
Emma wins the U/18 singles, doubles and mixed in Sundays Well. She also wins her first Munster Senior Interprovincial
Cap.

The Club wins the Badminton Ireland Regional Club of the Year Award. Hilary O’Sullivan wins the Regional
Volunteer of the Year Award.
Two Div 5 teams in the Clare Leagues. Ennis West defeats Ennis East in the final. The winning team was Elma
Callinan, Ann O’Sullivan, Mary Talty, Kevin Grogan, Manfuz Rahman, G Browne. The r-up team was Paula Ryan,
Sorcha Flynn, Ruth Murray, Peter Kavanagh, Paddy O’Grady, Declan Cusack.
The Div 6 team were r-up in their League. The team was Geraldine Kavanagh, Michelle Marron, Paula Carroll,
Maeve Flouch, Ciaran Doyle, Tony Flynn and Joe Ryan. Ennis players also feature in the individual competitions.
Ennis hosts the Butterfield Cup.This is a Div 1 Senior Inter County competition. Clare have not won since 1966.
Clare are r-up in the competition. The team was Al Bredin, Adrian McNeill, Donal Marron, Rowan Eade, Aisling
Ryan, Darryl Eade, Ruth Lillis, Ciara Pender and Joanne Flanagan.
Munster Open U/13: Moya Ryan defeated Ciara Dwyer in the singles. Moya and Louise Sexton defeat Ciara and
Megan Bredin in the doubles. Moya won the mixed with Ciara r-up.

The Ennis Div 1 team were pipped for honours in the Haynes Cup held in Killarney. Former International Donie
O’Halloran won the player of the tournament award. The team was D O’Halloran, A Bredin, A McNeill, L
O’Halloran, Ritis Kasinkas, Ruth Lillis, Aisling Ryan, Yolanda Noorthoek, Lara Lewis and Rionach Power.

AGM 26 th Feb 2009
Over €40,000 was spent on upgrading the hall. A National Lottery Grant for €25,000 was received for this project.
The improvements included insulating the walls and ceiling, 6 new heaters, new lights and painted walls.
€9,000 was spent on resanding Courts 4 & 5. New scoreboards, new nets and windcheaters were also purchased.
€11,000 was spent on resanding courts 1, 2 & 3.
Other improvements included a new club sign and logo, satellite tv, tennis fencing repaired and painted.
An extra €9,500 is paid off the club loan so that this will be cleared by 2012. A Pavilion Membership was
introduced
The Club again wins the Badminton Ireland Regional Club of the Year Award. It missed out from winning the overall
Club of the Year by one point.
Sept 09: The badminton hall was closed for three weeks for improvements. It reopened in time for the tennis
championships
Nov. 09: Worst flooding in Ennis for 15 years. The Club was protected by a multimillion riverside flood barrier that
had only recently been completed.
Oct 09: Noel Duggan retires after many years of excellent service as caretaker to the club.
€2,500 raised from bag packing. The club has many excellent sponsors.

The Ennis U-16 team were R-up in the Munster Sunshine Cup losing to Sunday’s Well in the final. The team was
Tara D’Arcy, Alice Twomey, Grace D’Arcy (Captain), John O’Brien, Eoin Power and David Reidy.
Ennis U-13 Represents Clare in the Munster Community Games. The team was Amy McNamara, Ali McCarthy,
Meghan Fletcher, Nathan D’Arcy, Conor Power and Stephen Keane.
Ennis U-16 Represents Clare in the Munster Community Games, where they win the Provincial title. They then go
on to take the Gold Medal at the Community Games National Finals in Athlone.The team was Jimmy Akintola, Alice
Twomey, Olena Ochinnikova, Alison Brogan, John O’Brien, Eoin Power , Ciaran O’Brien and David Reidy.
The Colaiste Muire U-16 team won the Plate in the Munster Schools competition.
Eoin Power won the U-16 B section at the South of Ireland Tennis Championships.

Div 6 Mens team was Joe Walsh, Ray Cummins, Bill Twomey and Paul Reynolds.
2 teams enter the Winter Leagues
Ennis was r-up in the Clare Challenge Cup V. Killaloe. This involves junior and adult members.
Over 70 enter the Winter League
The Ennis U-18 team are r-up in the Munster Junior Cup. The team was Robert Pender (captain), Tim Horgan, Alice
Twomey, Tara d’Arcy, Grace d’Arcy, Daniel Foran and William Twomey.
Over 100 children attend the Parks Tennis.
Badminton
Summer Badminton Camps are held for the Juniors, and a special Summer camp in Limerick is held with
International Coach Jens Eriksson from Sweden.

Olympic badminton player and Irish No 1 Chloe Magee gave a three day coaching course to the juniors in Ennis.
She was helped by Brendan Hennessy. An exhibition match which also featured Ennis players Donal Marron, Ciara
Pender and Liam O’Halloran was also organized.
The club has 4 teams in the Clare Leagues. Two Div 4 teams, Div 5 and Div 6.
Nov 09: The Ennis Div 1 team win the Munster Premier League for the first time. The team was Al Bredin, Ronan
Mitchell, Rowan Eade, Joanne Flanagan, Ciara O’Connor, Ruth Lillis and Aisling Ryan. They narrowly defeated UCC
who were unbeaten in any competition for the previous year.
Clare are Munster Champions in the U/11, U/13 and U/15 A team events. This has never happened before. The
Ennis players on the 8 person teams were: U/11 Aaron Moloney, Brian Meaney, Cathal Ruane, Sally Molloy, Karen
McNamara and Lana Browne. U/13 Sophie Marron, Emma Kavanagh, Roisin Dwyer, Cathal Ruane and Cian Ruane.
U/15 Roisin Rynne, Amy McNamara, Ciara Dwyer, Megan Bredin and Ciaran O’Brien.
Dec 09: Clare win the Munster Butterfield Cup, which was held in Roscrea. This is the elite Div 1 intercounty team
event. Clare last won this event in 1966. The team was Aisling Ryan, Ciara Pender, Al Bredin (Captain), Catherine
O’Shea, Rowan Eade, Derek Flanagan, Donal Marron, Darryl Eade and Ruth Kilkenny. All the team were members
of Ennis.

The Div 1 team also competed in the Irish Junior Cup for the first time in many years. This is the Irish inter club
event. The team played well but unfortunately did not make the finals. The team was Aisling Ryan, Al Bredin

In the Munster Junior individual Championships: U/11 Karen McNamara wins all 3 titles. She defeated Lana
Browne in the singles and partnered Sally Molloy in the doubles and Cathal Ruane in the Mixed. U/13 Moya Ryan
wins 3 titles. She defeated Roisin Dwyer in the singles, who she also partnered to win the doubles. U/15 Ciara
Dwyer won the singles and the doubles with Megan Bredin. Ciara and Megan were also selected for the Munster

Twomey, Alison Brogan, Olena Ochinnikova and Laura McGann.

Central to the negotiations with Fr. Sean Moriarty that led to the amalgamation of the Ennis
Badminton Club and the Ennis Tennis Club in 1982.
The Chairman of the committee that upgraded the old Tennis Club that had a flooded site with
a burnt out clubhouse, and no members. They built a new clubhouse with two badminton
courts, three new tennis courts and security fencing. The car park was raised and floodlights
placed on two tennis courts. 150 members from the Badminton Club became keen tennis
players.
Given a Honorary Life membership in 1992. Only the second person to receive the award after
Fr. Sean Moriarty in 1982.

The man instrumental in the revival of the tennis club in 1980. Back then the club
was dilapidated and flooded with no members. Oliver fundraised for the club and
promoted the amalgamation of the club with the local successful badminton club.
