ASAs and LEARNING POWER
At BSM we do not teach our pupils what to think, we teach them how to think. Today we
live in a rapidly changing world; technological innovations are having a shorter and shorter
shelf life. The world that our children will graduate into will be very different to the world
that exists today. Many of the jobs that our children will be doing have yet to be thought of.
The need to be a life long learner is greater than ever.
To prepare our pupils for a life of learning, BSM is equipping all students with six LEARNING
POWER skills. Throughout the school we aim to ensure that all students are independent,
collaborative, communicative, creative, questioning and reflective. We believe that it
is these skills that will ultimately decide how successful our pupils will be in life.
BSM’s After School Activity programme offers an excellent opportunity for your child to
further develop their LEARNING POWER skills, through a wide and varied range of activities
for your children to become involved in. Each clubs description explains how we see learning
connected to the club.
Our clubs will give your child plenty of fun and at the same time they will be boosting their
LEARNING POWER!
After School Activities (ASAs)
After School Activities in the Senior School:
Teacher led ASAs mainly take place every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 2.30 -
3.15 pm. Some ASAs such as sports teams, MUN, drama productions and paid ASAs may
take place on other days as appropriate.
Some Senior School ASAs will last for 1 ½ hours (2.30-4.00pm) and will take place
fortnightly rather than weekly.
Types of ASAs
ASAs in the Senior School offer our students a broad range of experiences in line with our
mission and vision statement.
In the Senior School ASAs are split into four categories; Creativity, Action, Academic and
Service (CAAS). This links well with the ‘Learning Power’ Initiative and also as a prelude to
the compulsory CAS element of the IB Diploma programme. Academic ASAs are usually
subject specific, but are open to all senior students e.g. Maths Clinic.
These have been colour coded in this guide for your ease of selection.
Category key : Creativity, Action, Academic and Service (CAAS)
The aims of the CAAS ASAs are to give our younger senior students the opportunity to
develop an important range of skills and become responsible, compassionate and effective
global citizens. This is intended to complement our existing curriculum and encourage the
development of new areas of interest.
Key Stage 3 students are strongly encouraged to do at least one ASA over the year and to
do at least one activity in each category over the key stage. Participation in ASAs will be
included on leaving certificates and in references when students move on from BSM. Key
Stage 4 students may choose to do an ASA as long as it does not interfere with their
studies. IB students contribute to the ASA programme by supporting teachers with the
running and organisation of an activity, as part of their CAS programme.
Creativity ASAs
Action ASAs
Academic ASAs
Service ASAs
These cover a wide range of arts, drama and musical activities.
May include a variety of sports and physical training.
These are usually subject specific ASAs that are there to help
support the students with their learning in that area.
Are about making a difference and trying to positively impact on
the school, local, national or international community.
BASIC INFORMATION ABOUT THE STRUCTURE OF ASAs
We are pleased to offer another full and varied programme this year. A lot of time and
planning has gone into ensuring a wide range of activities for all age ranges. ASAs are not
compulsory at BSM but they do provide a fun catharsis from the pressures of study.
There are, however, some restraints placed upon the programme:
‣ staff abilities vs activities on offer – BSM staff run ASAs on a voluntary basis so
the activities on offer reflect their interests. This means that activities can / will
change on a yearly basis.
‣ time – ASAs normally run from 2.30 – 3.15. However some run after that time, and
even at weekends, so that we can fit as much in as possible.
‣ areas available – it is difficult to increase the existing range - particularly for sports
ASAs / teams
‣ safety - depending on the activity, there will be restrictions on the number of
children allowed in certain ASAs.
‣ past experience – some ASAs require that pupils have a minimum level of
knowledge or ability (please read the descriptions of the ASA carefully)
6

ASAs – A COMMITMENT!
Before you complete the registration form you MUST discuss the activities with your child
and ensure that they know they are expected to attend the activity on a weekly (or
fortnightly with some senior ASAs) basis. Please read the ASA description carefully and
email the teacher in charge if there are any specific questions about it to make doubly sure
that it will be something that your child will enjoy. Primary parents are invited to attend the
ASA assembly to hear about the clubs on offer for primary students.
A change to your original ASA choices will only be considered in special circumstances and
at the discretion of the teacher running the ASA, providing there is space available in the
ASA the child wishes to move to. Please bear in mind that ASAs involve a lot of planning
and preparation. We ask that the same courtesy is extended to the staff leading ASAs as
would be for normal lessons.
Please read the following information carefully!!!
CHOOSING YOUR ASA’s
As well as ASAs, the school runs sports teams, drama and music productions, orchestra
rehearsals, MUN etc which are filled on a trial and selection basis. If your child intends to
try out for any of the above, we recommend they also sign up for regular ASAs. Then, if
they are chosen for a sports team (for example) we can withdraw them from any ASA that
clashes with their training. This is much easier than trying to fit you into an ASA at a later
date.
The points system
ASAs will be given a points value:
Paid ASAs / sports teams / choir & orchestra / school production
Teacher led, school based ASAs
= 0 point value
= 1 point value
Points allowed per key stage:
KS1
KS2 and above
= 1 point
= 2 points
This means that pupils in KS1 can choose only 1 free teacher led ASA but they can choose
as many other 0 value ASAs on top of that as they wish. For KS2 and above they can
choose up to 2 teacher led activities plus any other 0 point activities.
When registering on-line, you will be blocked from choosing any more activities if you go
over your allocated point allowance.
7

ASA blocks
This block of ASAs will start on Monday 14 th January 2013and continue until:
Senior Friday 26 th April 2013
Primary Friday 14 th June 2013
You will be notified in the Lions Roar of any cancellations due to Parent Teacher Conferences
or whole school events which interrupt the programme. If the club has to be cancelled at
short notice all efforts will be made to try and inform you, via e-mail, phone call etc.
In the event that the club is cancelled at short notice on any particular day, Primary aged
students will wait in the Primary library for their transportation home.
8

How to register your ASAs
First come first served
The on-line system ensures that your child is placed in their chosen ASA. However, as in
previous years, the places available go quickly! The computer registration system will
monitor and record ALL entries – down to the millisecond!!! – so essentially, it is still a first
come, first served system.
The system will store the names of up to 5 reserve places if the ASA you want is full. In the
event of withdrawals and cancellations, you will be notified via email when a space becomes
available.
The on line registration will not become active until the dates below.
Attempting to register before the dates will result in an ‘error’
message.
The registration will be staggered as below and only open on the advertised day,
after which it is turned off. Following this, please e mail Mr. Hunt directly at:
rhunt@britishschoolmanila.org
Paid ASAs Only on Tuesday 8 th January 2013 as from 3pm
KS1 Years 1 & 2 Only on Tuesday 8 th January 2013 as from 3pm
KS2 Years 3, 4, 5, & 6 Only on Wednesday 9 th January 2013 as from
3pm
Senior ASAs Only on Thursday 10 th January 2013 as from 3pm
To register please log onto the school website
www.britishschoolmanila.org
and follow the link for the After School Activity programme or go direct to :
www.mybsmasa.org
To avoid difficulties when registering your children’s choices and receiving the
error message ‘invalid student id or date of birth’, please avoid these common
errors :
Not following the schedule set above
Case sensitive
Entering date of birth in the wrong format
Mixing letters and numbers, particularly o’s for 0’s
Trying to register earlier than the schedule listed above
9

ASAs available to your child
The system will be set up in such a way that as soon as you log in, we will be able to match
your child to available activities for their age group. Only activities available to them will
show up on your screen, so you no longer have to wade through activities which aren’t
available in your child’s age group. Should activities be full with no reserve places on offer
then these WILL NOT show up when you sign in. The system will automatically remove it
from your list of choices. So if the activity you want isn’t showing, it’s not a mistake – the
activity is full.
Pupils on the waitlist / reserve list will NOT have a point deducted!!! This means that you
can be waitlisted for your 1 st choice but can still start with a second choice ASA until a place
becomes available.
IMPORTANT BALLET NOTICE -
Ballet and Gymnastics clubs will not be included on the ASA registration form
because although the school promotes and supports the activities, all administration for
these clubs is handled separately by the clubs organisers themselves.
Immediate Feedback
The system has been designed in such a way that you will receive immediate messages via
email to the email addresses the school has on record, after you have made your choices.
These emails will confirm your selection and show you your child’s ASAs for the year.
School Buses
Should your child require bus transportation home after their ASA, you MUST indicate this
when you register. When you do, an automatic register for buses will be sent to the
company. Failure to ‘check the box’ may result in your child being left behind.
10

Paid Activities (PASA’s)
There are various outside agencies that come into school to run activities such as:
‣ Ballet (Claravall School of Dance – see note above)
‣ Hip hop dance
‣ Performing arts
‣ Drama club
‣ ……….and many more!!!
The school is responsible for checking the qualifications / experience of outside instructors
and observing some sessions in order to ensure the health and safety of pupils. All
instructors and parents helpers who lead / assist the ASA programme are asked to sign and
abide by the BSM Code of Conduct.
Payments to be paid in advance.
Paid to the finance department in an envelope clearly marked,
For the attention of, Mr. Hunt, name of ASA, name of student and the amount
inside the envelope.
Refunds for paid ASA’s will not be given should you withdraw after payment is received.
Pupils who have not paid by the start of their 3 rd session will be asked to go to the library
until their payment in full for the duration of the block has been received.
Cancelled ASAs

Should the unfortunate situation occur whereby an activity is under-subscribed, it
will be cancelled. The cancellation is at the discretion of the supervising member of
staff. The guideline generally used is that activities with fewer than 6 - 8 children
will be cancelled. Should your ASA be cancelled you will be notified and ask you to
log in to choose another.

When ASA clubs have started, if for some reason it has to be cancelled on a
particular week, then every effort will be made to let the students and parents know
in advance so that you can make alternative travel arrangements home for that day.
However, if at times this is not possible then the procedure is that your child will be
supervised by an adult running the ASA until 3.15 and then take their pre-arranged
transport home.
11

PERFORMANCE & PRODUCTION GUIDELINES
PLEASE PAY PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO THIS PAGE IF YOUR CHILD HAS BEEN
SLECTED FOR MUSIC, DRAMA and / or PE AT A PERFORMANCE LEVEL
You may be doing an ASA which doesn’t clash with your “selected” activity. However, we
appreciate that as a performance / competition date approaches, extra rehearsals / training
sessions may be called. In this situation, the selected activity takes priority over the
regular ASA. If this situation occurs, please advise the ASA teacher and explain why you
will not be attending for the number of sessions required by the teacher in charge of the
priority activity.
Should your child be involved in both a music performance and sports team both with
events running at the same time then practices / sessions will be decided by the teachers in
charge. Please highlight your child to us should you feel this type of situation could
potentially concern them.
Please speak to your child and explain the commitment involved should they be part of the
choir, sports teams or drama shows. Please make sure they are 100% sure before agreeing
to be part of these.
12

MODEL UNITED NATIONS (MUN)
MUN does not run as a regular ASA. Instead, two months before the event, conference
training takes place two or three afternoons a week, by arrangement with the MUN
Directors and the students involved.
Debate, create resolutions, pretend to be a UN delegate in our 4 conferences a year. Open
to all (training starting Thursday 16th August)
If you wish to be considered as part of the MUN team then you should give your name
directly to Ms Mouquet Mr O’Rourke for consideration at the start of the academic year.
She and the other organisers will then select a team to represent the school.
However, the team welcomes new MUN-ers who would like to attend 1 or more training
sessions in view of participating to the local and in-school conferences this year or to the
international ones in the following year.
This is for senior students only.
PARENTAL HELP
May I ask that any parent who is interested in running or helping out with ASAs please get
in touch the ASA coordinator Richard Hunt rhunt@britishschoolmanila.org. It would be
great to have a list of parents who can assist with the programme. We have high numbers
in some activities and help is very much appreciated.
ALMOST THERE….
Finally, I hope everything is clear and easy to understand! However, if you or your child
have any queries then feel free to contact Richard Hunt rhunt@britishschoolmanila.org and I
will get back to you with an answer or explanation as soon as I can.
Thanks!
Monday
In this ASA we will collect reused and
recycled items from our homes to make
new objects using our creativity. We
would like children to reflect on the consumables that
we use in everyday life and how we can make small
changes to help these materials to be used more
effectively. We will make magazine beads and
jewelry, a plastic lids hanging wall, transient art
using natural materials, canned wind chimes, milk
carton bird feeders, junk modeled musical
instruments, egg carton crafts, have a bread tag
challenge, make a recycled puzzle piece frame and
make recycled wax crayons. We would like children
to think about how their actions impact the
environment and help Manila become a greener and
cleaner place to live in. We are offering 15 spaces
for year 2 and 3 children to join us on Mondays in
Model United Nations (MUN) is designed to be a simulation of the real
assemblies at the United Nations. MUN provides students with an opportunity
to research, plan, negotiate and debate about a wide range of issues affecting
the world today. Students research the values and attitudes of a particular
country and present that country’s views in committee meetings and a general
assembly.
Participation in MUN activities will help students develop their collaborative
and communicative skills through the write up of a series of operative clauses
together with other representatives of different countries, and through the
extensive debates that ensue. Students will need to be questioning, reflective
and creative in their proposals to make the world a better place.
We will be preparing for an internal conference during international week in
February and maybe for an inter-school one later on in the year…
So if you like to argue and voice your opinion on issues of the world, this ASA
is for you!
FRIDAY’S LIST OF ACTIVITIES AND DESCRIPTION
Indian Classical dance
Hatha Yoga
Hatha Yoga – This is a paid ASA
Oksana
Kalinich
Yoga 3 - 13 15 Fri
HATHA YOGA PHP 300.00 Per
Session. Needs minimum of 8 to
run.
Hatha yoga is mostly yoga that
prepares the body for the spiritual
path via physical and breathing
exercises.
As you progress with hatha yoga, you
will gain greater flexibility in your
body and mind. Like any form of
exercise, hatha yoga helps develop
physical strength. Hatha yoga adds
another dimension to this with a
matching development in emotional
strength that will help you handle the
challenges of life with a balanced
disposition.
When you study hatha yoga you will
find that it works on several levels. As
a beginner, you will experience the
practice of hatha yoga as a form of
physical exercise that challenges and
refines your flexibility, strength and
balance. Also, you will learn to control
your breathing in a relaxed and
modulated way in order to provide
focus in the different postures.
Learning to do this properly is the
gateway to many of the mental and
spiritual benefits of hatha yoga. As
the individual progresses, greater
flexibility of body and mind is gained.
Hatha yoga's added dimension
matches development in physical
strength with emotional strength. This
empowers the practitioner to face
life's challenges with a balanced
disposition.
INDIAN CLASSICAL DANCE- BHARATA NATYAM
Teacher : Shanti Sreedhar
Have you always been fascinated by Indian Bollywood Dances Did you know most Indian
actresses are trained in Bharat Natyam So if you want to dance with Indian grace then the
Bharat Natyam PASA is the one for you!
Bharat Natyam is a dance for the mind, body and soul, known for its grace, purity, statuesque &
sculpturesque poses. It is one of the traditional forms of Indian Classical dances, perfected and
stylized over 2000 years yet remains as fresh and fascinating in its richness, traditional
movements, aesthetic appeal and variety of abhinaya.
This PASA is an introduction to using rhythmic movement, footwork, facial expression and
intricate hand gestures called “mudras” to convey emotion and symbolic portrayal. The students
will learn to combine the energy of Nritta (rhythmic movements) with the emotion of its Nritya
(expressive movements) to effectively communicate with the audience.
After learning this stylized form the students will be able to dance to any kind of Indian music
with better rhythm, flexibility and grace.
No prior dance experience is required this course. The course is open for all nationality students
from age 4 onwards.
Those interested can come for a free trial on the first day.
Fee per session: PHP 400 per student.
