“Sustainable Living begins with me”
Option for one-year MBA
Upon graduating, students have the option of taking a one-year MBA
with Sustainable Living emphasis. Requisite undergraduate courses
are needed for this option.
(Excerpt)
Maharishi University in Fairfield is establishing itself as a leader
in sustainable living architecture among Iowa’s institutions of
higher learning. The university will use environmentally friendly
construction techniques. One building will create all of its own
electricity by solar, wind and geothermal activity.
Bachelor’s degree
in Sustainable Living
The first Sustainable Living degree program in America
“My education in the program has been mainly in the
green building field. I have learned how buildings influence
human health and the surrounding environment.
The flexible nature of the program has let me research
the green building field at length.
“In addition to a Bachelors in Sustainable Living, I’m also
getting two professional certificates — one in Bau-Biologie,
and the other in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design
(LEED). The program has led me to see society in a new light. I have gained
an overall appreciation for how environmental consciousness influences
the world. This kind of knowledge can be empowering and valuable to
anybody. “ — Vincent Bataoel
“Our courses are fabulous because many of them are
hands-on, where the students can use the knowledge
they’re learning and expand on it with their own
creativity. During our Organic Farming class we prepared
a business plan for creating our own organic farm. The
plan included the land purchase, deciding what we were
going to grow, and calculating our long-term finances.
“This is really what the sustainable movement is all about — building
intelligence through creativity in action and developing ideas to sustain and
regenerate our world.” — Marissa Markowitz
Technique for inner growth
All students and faculty practice a simple natural procedure — the
Transcendental Meditation technique. Extensive published research has
found that this technique optimizes brain functioning, dissolves stress, and
improves learning ability.
One course at a time
The block system eliminates the stress of homework and exams in 4-5
subjects at once. You absorb yourself deeply in a single subject in a small
class — with lots of active and collaborative learning — making learning
easy, fun, and satisfying.
Organic vegetarian meals
We’re the first college in the USA to offer an all vegetarian, organic, freshly
prepared menu — one reason why our students are healthier when they
graduate than when they enroll.
Natural health program for all students
As a student at our university, you’ll learn simple but highly effective methods
for creating and maintaining a balanced state of body and mind.
The world is my family
Our students come from throughout the USA and more than 60 countries
around the world, representing many cultures and religions.
Non-sectarian
The University has students from every major religion.
Accreditation
The University is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission and is a
member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
“Group projects are a major educational tool in the
Sustainable Living program. Projects range from topics
like the life-cycle of liverworts to reducing the City of
Fairfield’s energy bill. In a Permaculture Design course we
redesigned the Fairfield City Square.
“The practical projects I’ve worked on become infused
with all sorts of fun and creative ideas, in large part
because of the emphasis each class puts on using the full creative potential
of each student through Consciousness- Based education. There really are no
limits to what can be thought of and accomplished in the field of Sustainable
Living. It covers all areas of life — and people in this field are generally of the
mindset: If we can conceive it, we can make it happen.” — Anna Bruen
“I have taken many courses in Sustainable Living, from
Organic Agriculture to Solar Engineering, but the course
that tested my knowledge the most was Environmental
Management because I had to develop and present
a plan (videotaped for the U.S. government) for making
cities completely self-sufficient in food and energy
production.
“I used precedents such as the American “Victory Gardens” of the first half of
the 20th century, as well as Cuba’s “Sustainable Revolution” to prove it isn’t
beyond our ability to develop sustainable communities right now. It just
takes a little knowledge and commitment, but most importantly, love... for
yourself, for mankind, and for the planet.” — Paul Garrido
“In a recent workshop class we broke up into teams and
with the help of professionals, we built a solar powered
golf cart, a wind generator, a solar oven and a biodiesel
generator. I worked on the solar oven with many
knowledgeable and inspiring people.
“The most fulfilling thing was having the hands-on
experience of creating something we’d learned about
— a clean technology that can help power our future!”— Bonnie Mercer
