The basic exemption from income tax as outlined above can be fur<strong>the</strong>r increased by up to<br />

€10,000 if <strong>the</strong> person is not a member <strong>of</strong> an occupational pension scheme. (This can only be<br />

claimed if <strong>the</strong> person has not made any claims in respect <strong>of</strong> a lump sum retirement gratuity<br />

received in <strong>the</strong> previous 10 tax years.)<br />

Any amount <strong>of</strong> redundancy payment or retirement gratuity in excess <strong>of</strong> whichever exemption<br />

applies is liable to income tax.<br />

As mentioned, under <strong>the</strong> provisions <strong>of</strong> section 8 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Finance Act 2011, <strong>the</strong> maximum<br />

lifetime amount that may be paid tax free in respect <strong>of</strong> a retirement gratuity is, with effect<br />

from 1 January 2011, €200,000.<br />

EU Payments<br />

142. Deputy Éamon Ó Cuív asked <strong>the</strong> Minister for Finance <strong>the</strong> total payments made by <strong>the</strong><br />

State to <strong>the</strong> EEC-EU broken down on a year-by-year basis since we joined <strong>the</strong> Union in 1973;<br />

and if he will make a statement on <strong>the</strong> matter. [7624/12]<br />

<strong>the</strong> State from <strong>the</strong> EEC-EU broken down year-by-year since Ireland joined <strong>the</strong> Union in 1973;<br />

and if he will make a statement on <strong>the</strong> matter. [7625/12]<br />

143 toge<strong>the</strong>r.<br />

In relation to payments made by <strong>the</strong> State to <strong>the</strong> European Union and total payments<br />

received by <strong>the</strong> State from <strong>the</strong> European Union since 1973, <strong>the</strong>se details are at Table 10 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

document “Budgetary and Economic Statistics” published by my Department in September<br />

2011. The document can be obtained from <strong>the</strong> following website address:<br />

A copy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Table 10 is set out for your convenience.<br />

The Deputy should note that it has not been <strong>the</strong> practice to include research receipts paid<br />

directly to private entities in this table as <strong>the</strong>se are collated in a different manner; however <strong>the</strong><br />

Department <strong>of</strong> Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation have supplied <strong>the</strong> following figures, for awards<br />

to Irish participants in projects funded under <strong>the</strong> European Framework Programmes for<br />

Research and Development:<br />
