persons appointed; to which boards and agencies; <strong>the</strong> remuneration details <strong>of</strong> each appointment;<br />

and if she will make a statement on <strong>the</strong> matter. [7817/12]<br />

Minister for Children and Youth Affairs (Deputy Frances Fitzgerald): In relation to <strong>the</strong><br />

NEWB, <strong>the</strong>re have been two appointments to <strong>the</strong> Board since my appointment as Minister for<br />

Children and Youth Affairs. Mr. Brendan Broderick was appointed based on a nomination <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> trade unions and staff associations representing teachers under S9(2)(1)(b)(iv) <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Education<br />

(Welfare) Act 2000. Mr. Broderick was a direct replacement <strong>of</strong> a retiring nominee during<br />

his term <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice. Mr. Eamonn Flynn was appointed to <strong>the</strong> NEWB based on a nomination <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Educational Welfare Officers under S9 (2)(1)(b)(v) <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Education (Welfare) Act 2000<br />

whereby <strong>the</strong> Minister is obliged to consult with specified bodies in <strong>the</strong> process <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se appointments.<br />

Mr. Broderick and Mr. Flynn are both ordinary board members in receipt <strong>of</strong> no<br />

remuneration.<br />

In relation to <strong>the</strong> FSA, <strong>the</strong>re have been ten members appointed to <strong>the</strong> Board since my<br />

appointment as Minister, namely Sharon Foley, Dick Hickey, Ca<strong>the</strong>rine Hazlett, Marie Fenlon,<br />

Yvette O’Malley (resigned 10 November, 2011), Liz Chaloner, Nuala Ryan, Imelda Martin,<br />

Caroline Murphy and Nollaig Byrne. Both Ca<strong>the</strong>rine Hazlett and Imelda Martin are not in<br />

receipt <strong>of</strong> any remuneration. As Yvette O’Malley resigned in November, 2011 <strong>the</strong>re are currently<br />

seven board members who are each in receipt <strong>of</strong> €5,985 per annum.<br />

I have made one appointment to <strong>the</strong> Board <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AAI since my appointment. Imelda Ryan<br />

was appointed on 7th February, 2012 and is in receipt <strong>of</strong> €7,965 per annum.<br />

There is no Board for <strong>the</strong> Ombudsman for Children’s Office. I am currently in <strong>the</strong> process<br />

<strong>of</strong> making appointments to <strong>the</strong> board <strong>of</strong> management <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> children detention schools and<br />

will announce <strong>the</strong> full board when all members have been appointed. The term <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> previous<br />

Board expired in October 2011 and <strong>the</strong> vacancies for <strong>the</strong> current Board are currently listed on<br />

my Department’s website.<br />

Hospital Services<br />

603. Deputy Michael McNamara asked <strong>the</strong> Minister for Children and Youth Affairs <strong>the</strong> costs<br />

that will be incurred for <strong>the</strong> refurbishment <strong>of</strong> Coovagh House special care unit at St. Joseph’s<br />

Hospital, Limerick city, when it will open; and if she will make a statement on <strong>the</strong> matter.<br />

sought <strong>the</strong> information from <strong>the</strong> HSE requested by <strong>the</strong> Deputy and I will provide <strong>the</strong> Deputy<br />

with this information when it becomes available.<br />

Child Care Services<br />

604. Deputy Michael McNamara asked <strong>the</strong> Minister for Children and Youth Affairs <strong>the</strong><br />

number <strong>of</strong> children that are being sent outside <strong>the</strong> State for special care; <strong>the</strong> cost to <strong>the</strong><br />

Exchequer; and if she will make a statement on <strong>the</strong> matter. [7961/12]<br />
