251. Deputy Ca<strong>the</strong>rine Murphy asked <strong>the</strong> Minister for Education and Skills if any remuneration,<br />

stipend, expense facility, financial facility or similar payment is being made from <strong>the</strong><br />

Exchequer to any senior public servant who has retired from his Department beyond any<br />

accrued pension entitlements; if any such payment has been sanctioned for current senior public<br />

servants who are about to retire from his Department; if he will list <strong>the</strong> name, positions and<br />

details <strong>of</strong> any relevant moneys paid or scheduled to be paid <strong>of</strong> any person in receipt <strong>of</strong> or<br />

sanctioned to receive such a payment; and if he will make a statement on <strong>the</strong> matter. [8270/12]<br />

Minister for Education and Skills (Deputy Ruairí Quinn): At <strong>the</strong> 31st, December 2011 one<br />

retired Assistant Principal Officer, two retired Principal Officers and eleven retired school<br />

inspectors were engaged by my Department to assist <strong>the</strong> Department in certain functions. In<br />

addition to this one retired Assistant Secretary was appointed to <strong>the</strong> board <strong>of</strong> FÁS. Where<br />

appropriate, pension abatement was applied. The tabular statement gives details <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficials<br />

concerned, <strong>the</strong>ir grade at retirement and <strong>the</strong> remuneration <strong>the</strong>y received in 2011.<br />

One retired school inspector has been appointed to <strong>the</strong> holding company and ano<strong>the</strong>r<br />

appointed to <strong>the</strong> board <strong>of</strong> directors <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Middletown Centre for Autism which is a body<br />

jointly funded by my Department and <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Education in Nor<strong>the</strong>rn Ireland. The<br />

holding company meets once a year while <strong>the</strong> Board <strong>of</strong> Directors is expected to meet 8 to 10<br />

times a year. A daily rate for attendance <strong>of</strong> £160 (sterling) will apply. No payments were made<br />

in 2011.<br />

At this juncture 39 <strong>of</strong>ficials at my Department have applied to retire on or before <strong>the</strong> 29th,<br />

February 2012. There are currently no plans to re-engage any <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se <strong>of</strong>ficials.<br />
