54 The New <strong>Carlsberg</strong> A/S<br />
<strong>Carlsberg</strong> Laboratory<br />
on 28 August <strong>2000</strong>. The district plan allows for<br />
new building to take place immediately in three<br />
areas, whereas the building on the remaining six<br />
areas is conditional upon prior preparation of an<br />
additional district plan. In total, the district plan<br />
makes it possible to build a total floorage of<br />
approx. 100,000 m 2 for non-residential building,<br />
100,000 m 2 for flats <strong>and</strong> approx. 25,000 m 2 for<br />
public purposes, of which it is expected that the<br />
local authorities will use approx. 7,500 floorage for<br />
the construction of a new school.<br />
The <strong>Carlsberg</strong> Bequest to the<br />
Memory of Brewer J.C. Jacobsen<br />
On 1 October 1938, 60 years after the <strong>Carlsberg</strong><br />
Foundation took over brewer J.C. Jacobsen’s<br />
brewery, Old <strong>Carlsberg</strong> - the foundation established<br />
The <strong>Carlsberg</strong> Bequest to the Memory of<br />
Brewer J.C. Jacobsen as a tribute to the foundation’s<br />
founder, whose extensive engagement in<br />
society is well-known.<br />
The trust was established with a basic capital<br />
of DKK 1 million <strong>and</strong> the charter stipulated that it<br />
is to “operate in support of socially beneficial<br />
aims within the sphere of practical life, particularly<br />
in connection with science”.<br />
Since its establishment, the trust has granted<br />
about DKK 200 million measured in current value<br />
to approx. 6,000 large <strong>and</strong> small projects within all<br />
branches of society. At present, the trust grants<br />
around DKK 4 million annually to about 180<br />
activities in Denmark.<br />
Contributing to scientific objectives is one of the<br />
trust’s main objectives. As a result, the trust has<br />
supported the purchase of apparatus to be<br />
distributed among high schools <strong>and</strong> higher<br />
education courses to promote the development<br />
work with biotechnological experiments.<br />
Every second year, the Royal Veterinary <strong>and</strong><br />
Agricultural University in Copenhagen receives<br />
DKK 100,000 to be distributed as “<strong>Carlsberg</strong>’s<br />
research prize for the promotion of agronomics”.<br />
The Copenhagen University Hospital has also<br />
received a scientific grant for the purchase of ITequipment<br />
in connection with the establishment<br />
of the secretariat for the International Reference<br />
Centre for Continuing Technical Education.<br />
The newest addition is the establishment of<br />
“<strong>Carlsberg</strong>’s research prize for the promotion of<br />
chemistry” of DKK 100,000, granted as a tribute<br />
to chemical research. This prize is awarded every<br />
second year to a researcher within this field.<br />
The Tuborg Foundation<br />
On 9 February 1931, the board of The United<br />
Breweries Co. Ltd. decided to mark the 40 th<br />
anniversary of the foundation of the company by<br />
establishing the Tuborg Foundation with a basic<br />
capital of DKK 1 million. The United Breweries<br />
was established on 9 February 1891, when 12<br />
Copenhagen breweries joined forces.<br />
On 1 October 1991, the Tuborg Foundation<br />
was merged with the <strong>Carlsberg</strong> Foundation. The<br />
latter continued with the Tuborg Foundation as an<br />
independent unit within the <strong>Carlsberg</strong> Foundation<br />
with its own administration.<br />
According to its charter, the objective of the<br />
Tuborg Foundation is “to work for socio-beneficial<br />
objectives especially in support of Danish trade<br />
<strong>and</strong> industry”. Since its establishment, the Tuborg<br />
Foundation has distributed approx. DKK 500<br />
million in current value to around 11,000 large<br />
<strong>and</strong> small projects across the entire country. At<br />
present, the foundation grants about DKK 17<br />
million annually to approx. 400 activities.<br />
