Summary
Abdul Rahim Ahmad went through his early education in Kedah at the Kedah Science

Secondary School before pursuing his tertiary education in Brisbane, Queensland,
Australia. He obtained his Bachelor degree in Computer Science from University of
Queensland in 1984. He graduated with Masters of Science from Loughborough
University, UK in 1994 and PhD from UTM and University of Nantes, France in
2008. Abdul Rahim, a trained educator, obtained his Diploma in Education from
Penang Teacher Training College and spent 10 years as Technical lecturer in the
Electrical Engineering Department in the Polytechnics from 1985. He was appointed as
the Assistant Director of the Technical and Vocational Education Division at the
Ministry of Education in 1995. He then left the government service to join ASTRO as
Automation Engineer during the starting up of the ASTRO Broadcasting Centre in
Bukit Jalil in 1996 and spent 1.5 years there before deciding to rejoin the education line
at Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN). He has been with UNITEN since its
formation in 1997 until December 2012, for a total of 15.5 years. He was invited to join
Ministry of Science, technology and Innovation or (MOSTI) as Undersecretary for
ICT Policy Division from January 2013 until June 2013. He rejoined UNITEN from
June 2013 after the 6 months stint in MOSTI. He is an avid traveler, having travelled
extensively by car in UK, Western Europe, Australia, Thailand and Indonesia. He also
travelled in the Asean region, North America, China, Korea and Japan. His research
interests are in Machine Learning and Pattern Recognition (in particular in Handwriting
Recognition), Semantic Web, Automation System and Parallel & Distributed
Computing as well as Grid and Cloud Computing. He is married and has 4 grown up
children.
