WWW.TELEGRAM.COM/HOMETEAM CENTRAL MASS. HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS MAGAZINE PAGE 37 By Mike Besaw PREP SCHOOL Growth spurt Former Marlboro High star Canaan Severin now prized recruit at Worcester Academy wORCESTER — Growth. When people see this word they may think of their children, their garden or their grocery shopping bill. At Worcester Academy, they help in growth of the personal kind. The type of growth that shows up in a classroom, at a school function or on the athletic field. For the Hilltoppers’ third-year football coach David Dykeman, growth has come in the size of his team. In 2008, he had 28 players. This year, he had 52 in camp and was hoping to attract a few more when freshmen reported to school last week. One of the 52 is receiver Canaan Severin from Marlboro. The junior was a star football and basketball player at Marlboro High. However, he was not growing the way his father wanted. “I was still a little immature at Marlboro High School, and my dad wanted me to take that extra year and become more of a man,” Severin said. So he repeated the 10th grade last year, a decision the 6-foot-3 young man says has paid tremendous dividends in all aspects of his life. “Academically, (the repeat of sophomore year) helped me because the classes were a lot smaller, and that really helps because the teachers can give a lot more attention,” Severin said. Also, by living on campus, he had access to everything he needed (routine, discipline, tutoring) at his fingertips. “At night, you have practice, dinner and go straight to study hall,” Severin said. “Last year, I went to the library every night because my coach and dad wanted me to so I could stay focused.” Dykeman has seen the changes over the past year. “His study skills, his ability to act maturely has dramatically increased,” he said. Severin, along with his academic success, had a breakout sophomore campaign, which brought him much recognition and a full scholarship offer from Boston College. “I was in shock,” Severin said. “I didn’t really show it, but in my mind, I was like ‘Wow!’ ” For those who think this story ends here, think again. The offer has only spurred on Severin to see how high he can set the bar. “People have told me, ‘You got an offer. You should say you’re coming now,’ ” he said. “But that just motivated me, and I’m trying to work as hard as I can to get better at the little things because that’s what counts.” Dykeman sees a bright future for Severin. “Canaan brings an intensity and is a competitor in everything he does,” the coach said. “There’s going to be a lot of options for Canaan, and when that day comes, he is going to impact a program.” For the present, Severin will continue to impact the Hilltoppers, who look to continue to grow themselves. In 2008, they were 1-7 and improved to 4-4 last year. Dykeman and Severin agreed that a winning season would be the next logical step. “Our strength is in the skill positions,” Dykeman said. “I think we have good team speed on both sides of the ball, and our goal is to play fast.” A couple of locals will anchor the interior lines for Worcester Academy. Jack Donovan, a senior captain from Shrewsbury, is a threeyear starter at center and nose tackle. Postgrad Peter Hagermoser, a T&G Super Team member in 2009 from Nashoba Regional, will solidify both lines. For Severin, he will continue to strive to succeed on Vernon Hill and give as much as Worcester Academy has given him. “Canaan is becoming the complete student-athlete here,” Dykeman said. “He does so much for our community and not just in football and basketball. He has become an integral member of our community.” Canaan Severin is growing up. JOHN FERRARONE Worcester Academy junior receiver Canaan Severin, a former football and basketball star at Marlboro High, has a full scholarship offer from Boston College.

Jim’s take: Things are looking up in
Upton. Valley Tech has a good mix
of younger players like Trettel and
Avery to blend in with senior stars
like Barnicle, Wojnar, Rice and Leshinski
to help the Beavers make a run
at the Division 3C title.
