Near the end of a brutal stretch of games that includes Northbridge, Bartlett, Auburn and David Prouty, the Woolies square off against the Spartans on the road. It will be interesting to see what they can do with a year of varsity experience under their belts. The schedule is very tough for Millbury early, but if the Woolies can weather the storm, there could be another trip to the postseason. 5 Follow the Woolies’ every game this fall at www.telegram.com/hometeam. When their opponents have the ball: 3-4 formation.… Allowed 264 points. … Gray and Kramer are back to lead the linebacking corps. … Anderson is one of the better nose guards around. … Bolio and Klein are back in the secondary. In the trenches: The 6-foot-3, 205-pound Anderson is a tremendous two-way player at tackle. … White also will play tackle on both sides of the ball. One to watch: Tessier, a two-year captain, led Central Mass. in carries last season. Parcells said Tessier is dedicated to the weight room and is a tremendous player to rebuild a team around. “He’s a hard runner who would rather run you over than hit the sideline.” The quote: “We’re looking to take some steps forward this year,” Parcells said. “It was good for these kids to get the monkey off their back last year 2009: 3-8 (2-5 Division 3B) By Jim Wilson with a few wins — now it’s time to believe we can win. Jim’s take: Quaboag seems to be doing things right
under Shepherd in just the program’s second season.
The building blocks of a solid formation are there —
now it’s about keeping the momentum going and
utilizing some strong returning players into a competitive
season.
Chenevert is back at middle linebacker. … Carlos and
Perez return to shore up the defensive backfield.
In the trenches: Vega and Rosario return at the tackle
spots. … O’Leary is back at guard.
One to watch: MacNeil should improve on a stellar
junior year, thanks to weapons like Carlos, and Enrique
and Jamie Ortiz. The senior slinger has a solid line in
front of him as part of an offense that lost just two
starters. If the Pioneers stay healthy, MacNeil should
surpass 1,000 yards and give Southbridge its best
offensive weapon since Tyler Ramsey.
The quote: “I see us as being competitive,” Koumanelis
said. “Look for Prouty and Grafton to be very strong.
Every team that we play this year will be much
stronger. It will be a tough league.”
Key game: Oct. 29 vs. Uxbridge. The Pioneers host the
Spartans in what starts a brutal stretch of Division 2B
games, against Uxbridge, Leicester, David Prouty and
Bartlett. Southbridge needs to make a statement here if
it hopes to challenge for the league title.
Jim’s take: If the Pioneers stay healthy they should
compete for the league title. The Pioneers’ offense will
be tough to stop as Southbridge looks to finish strong
and raise some hardware at the end of the year.
Home field: Anthony Donatelli Field. Grass field, 62
Capron St., Uxbridge.
Brain trust: Coach: T.J. Raeke (fourth season, 14-20
career). Assistants: Justin Pominville (defensive
coordinator), John Kupiek (offensive coordinator),
Out with the old: The Spartans graduated two of
their four Division 2B all-stars, losing LB Pat
McCrohan and LB Justin Wroe.
When the Spartans have the ball: Wing-T. … Scored
249 points, third-most in Division 2A … Tessier
(1,025 passing yards, 9 TDs) returns for his second
year at quarterback. … Beaudette again will be a top
2A… The linebacking corps is loaded with Lovett (26
tackles), Bishop (44 1 ⁄2 tackles), Storey (team-high
80 tackles), Desjardin and Wisserkerke (20 1 ⁄2
tackles) all back. … Nye and Tessier (30 tackles, 4
INTs) shore up the defensive backfield. … McGrath
and Bell line up at the tackles.
In the trenches: The Spartans return a ton on the
lines with Bishop, McGrath, Jameson, Dubois and
Bell.
One to watch: When Raeke took over four years ago
to rebuild the Spartans, he found he already had a
tremendous piece of the puzzle with Tessier entering
his freshman season. Tessier has since become a
four-year starter at Uxbridge not only on the gridiron,
but on the basketball court as well. Tessier also has
started three years on the Spartans’ baseball team
and is garnering attention from Football Champion-
ship Subdivision (Division 1-AA) and Division 2
coaches for next fall. He’s a force on both sides of
the ball, and he will play a big role this year as the
Spartans make a playoff push.
The quote: “Experience will be a real strength for us
this year,” Raeke said.
Nov. 25 ..........................at Northbridge, 10:15
Key game: Oct. 29 at Southbridge. The teams
played a classic last year, with the Spartans edging
the Pioneers, 6-0. This year promises to be just as
good as these two teams are expected to compete
for the Division 2B title.
2009 results:
Uxbridge 40.........................West Boylston 20
Uxbridge 42 ..............................Monty Tech 8
Uxbridge 22...................................Nipmuc 20
Uxbridge 22 ..................................Millbury 14
Jim’s take: The Spartans return an impressive
defense that should keep most teams in check. Add
that to an offense that returns a handful of skill
position players, and Uxbridge should return to the
playoffs this year.
