musical barriers. Although they were called People’s Concerts they were never<br />

intended for the working class only but more to bring together difference social<br />

classes in the same building if not in the same seats. The better off still occupied<br />

the better seats and the working class were stuck in the gallery, but the concerts<br />

did symbolise community and shared experience, which after all was very<br />

important for the towns imagine.<br />
