FAMILY
Now that summer is upon
us and we look in the papers
and see the array of things to
do for the family, it reminds
me of all the family things
we used to do and enjoy.
These thoughts of family
are brought home to me at
this particular time as my
oldest son has just moved
back to Kamloops after several
years in Calgary.
Having spent the Canada
Day weekend helping him
get settled in, we have been
talking about the “good old
days.” Although these discussions
usually revolve
around the good times, I
sometimes sneak in a
thought or two about the
tougher times and and how
the results of raising two
boys have turned out. For
the most part it turned out
pretty good. Both boys are
on their own and making
their way in the world. One
of the happiest remarks I
have ever heard from my
kids is: “I am now starting to
understand why you did the
things you did when I was
growing up.”
Now that I am somewhat
older myself, I reflect back
on the period when I was
growing up. I remember
the times spent fishing and
golfing with my Dad and the
time spent with my Mother,
in my case, cooking and at
Christmas, decorating the
tree. Though we all
thought we were hard done
by in those days, (walking to
school every day “up hill
both ways”) I look back
now at those times as some
of the happiest times I have
had.
Although kids today have
just as hard a time as we did
and have some very complicated
decisions to make, I
am confident that they, in
their time, will look back at
these times with fond memories.
So to all of you finishing
school this year and moving
out into the “real world,”
Good Luck, be happy and
keep a positive outlook on
life.
