Remembering the Beloved
Coach Sechrest Sr.
Sechrest died at the age of 80 on June 19, after a short battle with
lung cancer. He worked for the college for 47 years, coaching for 26
years. After he retired in 2003, he would often be seen in the college’s
workout center, chatting with all around him and keeping up his fitness
regime.
MAC Athletic Director and former basketball coach Tim Gray, who
worked for a number of years alongside Sechrest, said the coach’s
easy, friendly nature put everyone at ease.
“Think about it,” he told the assembled guests at the funeral. “How
many times did you come away from talking to Coach, and NOT feel
a little bit better about your day Never.”
Sechrest was born and raised in Poplar Bluff. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he served from 1946-48 in
the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, N.C.
He attended Arkansas State College (now University) in Jonesboro, earning his bachelor’s degree in education
in 1951. He found work in Missouri at Van Buren High School, teaching physical education and coaching football
and basketball for the Van Buren Bulldogs.
He came to the Mineral Area in 1956, to take a position at Flat River High School (now Central High School).
Shortly after signing on, Sechrest discovered, in addition to teaching and coaching football and basketball, he
was required to teach two physical education classes for Flat River Junior College, which was then housed at
the high school. Since only 200 students were enrolled in the community college at the time, he said later, it was
a manageable addition to his workload.
In 1962, Sechrest earned his master’s degree from Colorado State College in Greeley, and soon went to work
for Flat River Junior College full time, coaching the MAC Cardinals and teaching P.E. courses.
During his coaching career at MAC, he had seven nationally ranked teams, and pushed numerous players to further
their education and athletic careers at other institutions following MAC. Four players have gone on to play
for National Basketball Association teams.
Sechrest was elected Coach of the Year three times by Region XVI of the National Junior College Athletic Association
(NJCAA) and served as director of that region for more than 16 years.
For years, he was a member of the NCAA Basketball Rules Committee. He served on the basketball player
selection committees for the U.S. teams in the 1979 Pan American Games and the Olympics. He was also one
of the basketball coaches at the first Olympic development camp in 1978 and was an assistant coach of the gold
medal U.S. team in the 1979 World University in Mexico City.
Sechrest assisted with the U.S. team which won the Governor’s Cup in the 1975 Brazil-Argentina Games and
helped conduct clinics in Denmark and Sweden. He also served as president of the NJCAA Basketball Committee
for at least six years. In the 1980s Bob was named to the NJCAA Hall of Fame.
Sechrest retired from coaching the MAC Cardinals in 1986, but remained as athletic director for several years
and worked part-time in the Wellness Center. He retired in 2003.

President’s Welcome
On behalf of the Board of Trustees, faculty and staff,
welcome to Mineral Area College. We are glad you
could join us for the game. By attending, you are
following an 80-year tradition of supporting college
athletics in the Mineral Area.
There are other ways the community has supported
this college, as well. Since 1922, Mineral Area College
and its predecessor, Flat River Junior College,
have had the privilege of serving the higher education
needs of this region, thanks to the progressive vision
of the area’s civic leaders. Community members can
look with pride on the College’s beautifully landscaped,
350-acre campus, knowing Mineral Area College
still works for them today.
Since the inception of the College in 1922, approximately
11,000 students have earned degrees or certificates.
More than 1,600 student athletes have worn
the Cardinal uniform, contributing to the competitive
tradition of today. This year, the men’s and women’s
programs have high expectations.
A college gets this far with strong academic programs, decisive leadership and support
of a progressive Board of Trustees, and the dedication of an enthusiastic faculty
and staff. They have provided all Mineral Area College students an environment to
succeed, whether it is in an academic program, athletic event or in the performing arts.
We hope you enjoy your time here at MAC, whether you’re here to enjoy its 80-yeartradition
of strong academics, or to participate in its 80-year tradition of athletics.
Cuba, MO
High School: Cuba High School
Honors/Awards: All-Conference, All-Districts
McDaniel spent the previous season at Missouri Baptist
University, an NAIA affiliate in St. Louis, MO. He becomes
the third college transfer to join the Mineral Area
College roster for the upcoming season. “Korey grabbed
our attention last year when we played Missouri Baptist in
the pre-season. He’s strong, athletic, has a high basketball
IQ, and can really shoot the basketball,” Head Coach Corey
Tate. McDaniel averaged 3.2 points and 1.5 rebounds
in limited action on the Spartans’ Varsity squad. But, in 4
JV games against junior college competition, McDaniel lit
it up with 32.5 PPG and 7.5 RPG.
McDaniel was a solid performer in Missouri small school basketball. “He is a bit of
an unknown commodity since he played in a rural school that wasn’t really considered
a basketball power. But, he has physically matured and knows how to play the
game at the college level,” Coach Chad Kish. “We are very excited to have Korey
join our program here at Mineral Area College,” stated Corey Tate.
Guyton, a 6’4”, long athletic guard can play multiple positions in the
Cardinals’ system and should be a nice fit to the up-tempo system run
at Mineral Area College. He averaged 17.1 points, 3.4 rebounds, 2.4
assists, and shot over 75% from the FT line during his senior campaign.
He was honored on the SICA South All-Conference team in
2008. Guyton had a standout summer for the Illinois Bobcats AAU
program helping them to multiple Tournament Championships. The
scouting report from ChicagoHoops.com on Guyton is, “he is a long
and athletic shooting guard who is capable of getting points both with
his jump shot, and also with his ability to slash to the basket.” Carlton
should bolster an already talented backcourt and help fill the void of
several talented graduated guards. “He is an athletic comb-type guard
that has a nice stroke from long range and can finish off the bounce.
He is very scrappy grabbing rebounds and deflecting alot of balls with
his hustle,” commented Assistant Coach Sean Pryor.

Welcome to
College Park
Why on-campus
A living-learning complex on the Park Hills campus.
At a price you can afford!
There are obvious advantages, such as being close
to classes and campus activities, the benefits of
campus security and access to community resources.
Studies also show that students living on-campus
actually have a better opportunity for growth and
success: “Living in a student community enhances
the learning process and better prepares the individual
for the real world.”
But forget all that practical stuff. The fact is, living
in College Park is FUN! The heart of the action,
closeness of your peers and the privacy of residential
living makes this the best place to get the most
out of the “college experience”!
Among the finest campus housing in the nation,
the best of both worlds: on-campus residence floor
plans and flexibility.
Not just a dormitory complex, College Park is
a community of students, sharing the common
goals of academic and personal success.
The entire staff -- live-in managing director, resident
assistants, maintenance personnel -- are all
here to help further those goals any way they can.
Whether enjoying a swim in the pool or a game of
sand volleyball, College Park residents can enjoy
the benefits of fun and social acitivites.
