annual meeting held<br />

Pakistan Telecommunication<br />

Authority (PTA) in collaboration<br />

with NUST School<br />

of Electrical Engineering and<br />

Computer Science (SEECS) and<br />

Internet Society (ISOC) Pakistan<br />

Chapter hosted an exclusive<br />

remote participation hub<br />

for fifth annual IGF Meeting at<br />

SEECS, Islamabad. The event<br />

organized keeping in view the<br />

dire need of Internet Governance<br />

issues understanding<br />

and capacity building among<br />

the youth and Internet professionals.<br />

IGF holds its annual meeting<br />

<strong>to</strong> invite participants across<br />

the globe; reflecting governments,<br />

International organizations,<br />

telecommunication<br />

companies, Internet content<br />

providers, software developers,<br />

the private sec<strong>to</strong>r, civil society<br />

and the media. The fifth<br />

Pakistan<br />

Telecommunication<br />

Authority (PTA) and<br />

COMSATS Institute of Information<br />

Technology have<br />

signed a Memorandum of Understanding<br />

(MoU) in order <strong>to</strong><br />

promote the telecom research<br />

that would be beneficial not<br />

only for both the organizations<br />

but also for the country. It is<br />

expected that this MoU would<br />

also boost mutual cooperation<br />

in the relevant fields and would<br />

enhance the industry academia<br />

linkage. Representatives of<br />

PTA and Comsats signed the<br />

MoU. Chairman PTA Dr. Mohammad<br />

Yaseen and Rec<strong>to</strong>r<br />

COMSATS Dr. S.M Junaid Zaidi<br />

were present during signing<br />

for mutual cooperation<br />

ceremony held at COMSATS<br />

<strong>to</strong>day. This MoU would be valid<br />

for (five) 5 years and would<br />

be renewed after completion<br />

of the period.<br />

It is expected that the concerned<br />

organizations would be<br />

benefited from this collaboration<br />

as the young researchers<br />

would be conducting research<br />

in the relevant fields of telecom<br />

with expert guidance of<br />

the faculty and the PTA. Main<br />

objectives of this collaboration<br />

are <strong>to</strong> support research activities<br />

and <strong>to</strong> equip the future<br />

leadership with theoretical<br />

training as well as practical<br />

experience in policy and regula<strong>to</strong>ry<br />

issues of telecom sec<strong>to</strong>r.<br />

On this occasion, Chairman<br />

PTA Dr. Mohammed Yaseen<br />

said that PTA would provide<br />

data on telecom sec<strong>to</strong>r and expertise<br />

<strong>to</strong> COMSATS, reciprocally<br />

COMSATS would encourage<br />

its students <strong>to</strong> undertake<br />

research in different areas of<br />

annual IGF Meeting was held<br />

in Vilnius, Lithuania, on 14-17<br />

September <strong>2010</strong>. The meeting<br />

brought through discussion on<br />

multifaceted public policy issues<br />

related <strong>to</strong> Internet governance.<br />

The hub remotely offered a<br />

number of workshops which<br />

<strong>to</strong>ok place at IGF in during four<br />

days. These workshops covered<br />

<strong>to</strong>pics like ‘Internet for Youth<br />

Activism’, ‘IPv6’, ‘Cloud Computing’,<br />

‘Freedom of Speech on<br />

Internet’, ‘Developing Civil Society<br />

and Youth Participation<br />

in Internet Governance in Asia’,<br />

‘Open Knowledge Environment<br />

in Bridging Digital Divide’ and<br />

Deploying DNSSEC.<br />

SEECS, Dr. Arshad Ali endorsed<br />

this joint effort. They said that<br />

these kind of arrangements assist<br />

our industry participants <strong>to</strong><br />

discuss the themes covered by<br />

the IGF from a local perspective,<br />

a stimulus or a starting<br />

point for the debate of local issues<br />

and implications, and for<br />

the development of a network<br />

of interested people.<br />

Chapter acting as primary<br />

organizers participated in<br />

the forum. Remote hub was a<br />

great success, acting as a local<br />

meeting point where the participants<br />

were able not only <strong>to</strong><br />

watch the web and audio cast<br />

proceedings of the IGF but<br />

also <strong>to</strong> interact with the International<br />

experts on IG issues.<br />

help COMSATS in identification<br />

COMSATS would cooperate<br />

with PTA on different issues<br />
